Rose was born a female dairy goat. Her only value to the farmer wasthe milk she produced, which the

farmer sold and used to make goatcheese. Every year she was bred and gavebirth, and as soon as her babies wereborn they wereforcibly removed,so that all themilk could beused for humans. It didn’t matterhow much she orthe babies criedfor each other, asthis is the fate ofall goats (andcows) who areused for dairyproduction. Thebabies were keptfor only a few months and then sold forgoat meat, as they were consideredmerely a byproduct of the industry. Rosewas never able to know her ownoffspring, to nurse them, to play withthem and teach them, as natureintended. She was very lonely and spenther days being milked frequently, andbeing fed just enough to survive. As theyears passed her condition deteriorated, and her milk production dropped. Thismeant a decline in profits for the farmer,so even though Rose was only six yearsold, one hot August day she was loadedonto a truck and sent to slaughter, justlike her babies who had gone before her.Rose was starving and very weak, as thefarmer had fed her even less when it wasdecided she was going to be sold. But

inside, Rose was very strong, anddetermined not to die. Because she had asecret, one that no one could tell due toher emaciated condition.

Rose was pregnant. And this time, sheintended to fight not only for her life, butfor that of her unborn babies too.

When the truck pulled up to theloading dock at the slaughterhouse, Rosebravely mustered everything she had andmade a huge leap out of the truck andlanded, literally running for her life. This was a busy section of Queens, NewYork, and Rose ran wildly in and out ofthe heavy traffic. She managed to getmany blocks away before police officersdarted her with a tranquilizer, and shefell onto the pavement. Amazingly theydid not take her back to theslaughterhouse, where it was assumedshe had come from, but instead turnedher over to the local animal control. From there she was transported toPoplar Spring by Mike and Wendy Sturaof Skylands Animal Sanctuary in NJ.

When Rose arrived at the sanctuaryshe was very thin and scared. She hadobviously never known any humankindness, as she trembled violentlywhenever she was approached. We sether up in a warm stall with lots of hayand soft bedding, and she began to eatravenously. As the days went by shebegan to relax a little, but she was stillextremely wary of people. She ate asmuch as we would give her, and over thenext few weeks she began to fill out andgain weight, which we were happy to see.About two months after she arrived, Rosesuddenly had a very large belly and

udders, and a few days later she surprisedus with twins! She was a doting motherto her newborns, and anxiously watchedus whenever we were in her stall, waitingfor us to take her babies as they had beenstolen from her so many times before.

But finally, for the first time in herlife, Rose was able to truly be a mother.

She was and is the most attentive ofgoats, nursing her babies, groomingthem, and teaching them how to behave. The three are always together, she neverlets them out of her sight. Every nightthey sleep cuddled together in theirprivate stall. While they are sleepingRose often rests her head onto the backsof her babies, who we named Heatherand Ash. During the day they run andplay in the pastures, climbing to the topof the large hay bales, and all 3 slidingdown like little children over and over. She is so blissfully happy to be with herkids, and now they will be able to staytogether, a happy family safe and inpeace, for the rest of their lives. n

Bella and FionaRescued from Starvation

In December we took in two beautifulQuarterhorses, a mare and filly, from a

terrible cruelty case in MontgomeryCounty, MD. Seven horses were seized

by animal control from a nearby farmwhere they had been severely starved, neglected and kept with inadequateshelter and no water. They were in suchbad condition that one of the horses diedafter being rescued. Bella, the mare, was

so emaciated that even though she wasdue to foal in two months it was notobvious that she was pregnant. Her baby,Fiona, was born two months after their

rescue, and was miraculously healthyand normal. Prosecution of the owner ofthese horses is still pending.

When Bella was rescued her feet werevery cracked and overgrown and her tailwas so matted it had to be cut off. It was

not known when she had last beengroomed or had her hooves trimmed.

Today Bella and little Fiona are thepicture of health. They are fat and happy, galloping, grazing and playing on the400 acres of pastures and woods with theother rescued horses and Gloria themule. Fiona is growing quickly, but isnever far from her very attentive mom. They are enjoying their life, and will beable to happily live together for the restof their days. n

Another long winter isfinally over, and we are

all happily recovering from asecond year of record coldand snow. Thankfully all theanimals had warm barns tosleep in, and despite thenumerous below freezingtemperatures, everyone did

very well. Thanks to manygenerous donors we were ableto build an additional barnfor our 46 pigs, just beforethe coldest season set in. Thislarge shed was desperatelyneeded after taking in 10 pigs(including mother pig Abbieand her 7 newborn babies)

from a broken down pen fullof nails and trash in a trailerpark in North Carolina. Allthe pigs from this rescue arenow happy and healthy andare enjoying sleeping in softstraw beds. The piglets havegrown rapidly and the extra

space has been quickly filled.A huge thanks to everyonewho donated for this criticallyneeded shelter!

Many new animals wererescued this past year, but themost widely publicized rescuewas without a doubt the 15baby chickens who were

mailed to a D.C. resident byher ex-boyfriend. They wereaccompanied by a note whichstated that there were “plentyof other chicks out there.”When the woman received thebox and read the note sheangrily stated she was goingto throw them in the trash.

The alarmedpostal workerhandling thedelivery tookthe tiny day oldbabies to thelocal humanesociety, whothen broughtthem to PoplarSpring. Becausethe situation

was an unusualone, several news stationscame to the sanctuary, andthe story was picked up by theAP and sent around the world. Many people were unawarethat it is legal to ship babychicks in regular postal mail, despite the fact that it often

results in the injury or deathof some of the birds. (Two ofthe chicks in this packagewere dead on arrival at theshelter). Hopefully morehumane laws will make thisbarbaric practice illegal in thenear future.

Our special events over thepast year were very wellattended (See back page andpage 3 for dates and info onthis year’s events.) Our 11thannual Run for the Animals, held in May, was a greatsuccess. Over 600 people

participated in the 5K Runand one mile Fun Walk, which was held again inbeautiful Wheaton Park. InJuly we once againparticipated in theMontgomery County FarmTour. Visitors to the farmenjoyed hay rides, our giantyard sale, and delicious veganbarbecue, fries and other

treats from the awesomeRandy Radish food truck, whodonated all proceeds to thesanctuary. Our Open Houseand Fundraiser in Octoberbrought large crowds ofsupporters, and raised anamazing $77,000. for therescued animals. Manyfriends and local businessescontributed fabulous food anddrink for the event, and weauctioned off over 300generously donated items inour silent auction. InNovember close to 1,000

people attended ourThanksgiving with theturkeys. The huge potluckoffered more than a hundreddelicious vegan dishes, and asalways watching the turkeysenjoying treats at their specialtables, and the feeding of thepumpkins to the pigs were thehighlights of the day. ■
