CHRISTMAS LUNCH 2012.. Slow delivery of meals due to insufficient waitingstaff meant those last to be served had cold meals, must be improved for 2013lunch. A long discussion took place on seating and food ordered reaching thecorrect person. This to be looked into for 2013.
AOB. Items submitted by absent members were discussed especially thesuggestion of members queuing for meals at a buffet. When this was last donethe feedback was against this. Even BHGC staff felt a waiter service was fasterand better for all. A new list of members with addresses is being produced forthe News letter after the AGM. The next newsletter to include a request formembers to consider joining the committee for 2013/14.

THE 2012 OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC GAMES
Heathrow VolunteerMy wife handed me a card at the end of last year, entitled 'Join Team Heathrow' as a volunteer to
welcome the world to London 2012. As a retired KLM Dutch airlines engineer, I jumped at the opportuni-ty to play my part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
I registered on-line to ’meet and greet' the visiting teams and athletes and after attending a ‘gettingto know you' day at Heathrow Academy and an interview with security officials, I received an emailconfirming an invitation for three separate training days and a Heathrow security pass.
On the first day of training we met Steve Williams OBE, a gold medal winnerat the Beijing 2008 Olympics, who passed around his two heavy gold medals.Everyone enjoyed the day and felt inspired and motivated to be part of this‘once in a lifetime' opportunity.
Two further days of training took place and we were allocated to Terminal5, where it took some time to familiarise ourselves with the layout, as there
are three unique terminals -A, B and C, connected by a driver-lessunderground train.
Before the games began I received emails regarding shift allocationrosters, as each day differed in the numbers arriving and as thousands ofGames families and London 2012 spectators started arriving, TeamHeathrow swung into action.
Hundreds of Heathrow volunteers, fluent in over twenty languages and intheir distinctive pink shirts and black trousers, met the teams and theirofficials as they came off their flights. At Terminal 5 we had a Games lane
specifically dedicated to Immigration to speed up the arrivals process. The athletes were then escortedto the Accreditation desks. Heathrow being the host airport, meant registration details were completedbefore the athletes left for the Olympic park or one of the other venues. The athletes and Gamesfamilies were then swiftly passed onto the 'Welcome Desks' placed inside the terminal.
Greater challenges came following the Olympic games closure on the 12th August, with the athletes
peak departure dates of 13th-15th August. These were dealt with in a purpose built Games terminal, later dismantled after the main Olympic games.
The Paralympic arrivals then followed at the end of August and I was privileged to be a ‘meeter andgreeter' once more.
I met many interesting people of all ages, backgrounds and origins, who were totally dedicated asvolunteer ambassadors for London 2012. I know from feedback talking to athletes and Games families, that their first impression on arrival at Heathrow was a warm and friendly greeting which will remain intheir memories for a long time to come.
I found volunteering an extremely rewarding experience and one I will never forget.
