ABSTRACT

Gilly, Michael Yohanes B. (2015). An Analysis of Non-observance Maxims in

The Amazing World of Gumball Cartoon. Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University.

Humor is a part of human life. People need humor to reduce their stress

from daily life activity. Humor can be performed in various forms, they are in the

form of moving pictures, comedy TV and also text with pictures as in comic

books and comic strips. Cartoon is one of the film that can be used to entertain

people. People from all ages can watch cartoon. Many people love to watch

cartoon because the conversation and the animation from the cartoon can create

humor. The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon is one of the cartoon that can be

analyzed by using pragmatic theory. Theory of conversational maxims, non-

observance maxims, implicature and theory of humor are implemented in this

study to analyze humor. Benign violation theory also is used in this research to

support others theories.

There were two research questions in this research. They are: 1. What are

the types of non-observance maxims in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon?

2. How frequent do the non-observance maxims occur to create comedy in The

Amazing World of Gumball cartoon?

In this research, mixed was used. The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon

was used as a subject to do research. The film was taken from season 3. The

researcher chose 20 episodes on purpose. Those 20 episodes have rich data to be

analyzed. This research used document analysis method in analyzing the data.

Human instrument became the primary instrument in gathering and analyzing the

data. GOM Player, scripts, and video was used as a secondary instrument to

gather and analyze the data.

The answer for the first research question, there were only two types of

non-observance maxims to create humor. Namely violating maxims and flouting

maxims. The use of implicature helps the researcher to find the meanings behind

the words and the humor effect that is created. The meanings are understood

through the two non-observance maxims, namely violating maxims and flouting

maxims. For the second research question reveals that in this cartoon, violating

and flouting maxims appeared frequently. There were 13 dialogues which are

violating maxims (52%) and 12 dialogues are flouting maxims (48%). Meanwhile,

opting out and infringing maxims did not appear in this cartoon to support humor

effect. Flouting and violating maxims had an important role in creating humor in

this cartoon.

ABSTRAK

Gilly, Michael Yohanes B. (2015). An Analysis of Non-observance Maxims in

The Amazing World of Gumball Cartoon. Yogyakarta: Universitas Sanata

Dharma.

Humor adalah bagian dari kehidupan manusia. Orang memerlukan humor

membuat efek humor. Kartun The Amazing World of Gumball merupakan salah

observance maxims apa yang didalam kartun The Amazing World of Gumball? 2.

Seberapa sering non-observance maxims terjadi untuk membuat komedi dalam

kartun The Amazing World of Gumball?

Dalam penelitian ini, metode campuran digunakan. Kartun The Amazing

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses the background of the research. There are six parts in

this chapter to be discussed. The first is research background, the second is research

questions, the third is problem limitation, the fourth is research objectives, the fifth is

research benefits and the last is definition of terms.

A. Research Background

In daily life, humor is a part of human life. McGhee (1994) says sense of

humor is one of the most powerful tools that can change daily mood and emotional

state. People need humor to reduce their stress from daily life activity. Humor can be

performed in various forms, they are in the form of moving pictures, comedy TV and

also text with pictures as in comic books and comic strips (Septiyani, 2014). Since

people like to watch movies or read books that contain humor, many TV producers

take the advantages in making comedy TV program on their channel. Cartoon is one

of the film that use humor in the conversation. Cartoon is a two dimensional

illustrated visual arts that appear on a television or comics in this era. Cartoon can be

watched by many people from young to old age nowadays. Many people love to

watch cartoons because it has simple humor with animation that makes many people

can laugh.

2

In this study, pragmatic theories are important to analyze the study which is

related to the conversation. The researcher uses theory which is introduced by Grice

(1995). There are four maxims or conversational maxims from Grice (1995). Those

four maxims are maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance and

maxim of manner. Those maxims can be implemented on the non-observance

maxims.

This study focuses on the non-observance maxims (Grice, 1995; Dornerus,

2005; Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995). They are violating maxims, flouting maxims,

opting out maxims and infringing maxims. These non-observance maxims help the

researcher to analyze the conversation on the cartoon. The researcher also uses theory

of humor from Attardo (1994) to analyze humor on the conversation. The researcher

uses theory of conversational implicature from Levinson (1987) to help analyzing the

meaning from what speaker said and the listener heard. Theory from McGraw and

Warren (as cited in McGraw and warner, 2014) is used to help conducting the

research to support theory from Grice in the conversation that is funny.

In this research, there are two reasons why the researcher chose The Amazing

World of Gumball cartoon as a subject to be analyzed. The first reason why the

researcher chose The Amazing World of Gumball as the subject because it provides

cases where humorous conversation can be identified using pragmatic theories.

Humor in pragmatics can be explained by using several theories from several experts,

like Grice (1995), Levinson (1987), Dornerus (2005), Attardo (1994), Thomas (1995)

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

3

and McGraw and Warren (as cited in McGraw and warner, 2014). Theory of

conversational maxims and theory of non-observance maxims are the theories which

can be used to analyze humor. The Amazing World of Gumball is one of the famous

cartoon in America nowadays that provides simple jokes with good animation. This

cartoon has been aired since 2011 until now. The Amazing World of Gumball has

released 3 seasons and 112 episodes. There are five characters in The Amazing World

of Gumball cartoon. They are Richard Watterson as the father, Nicole Watterson as

the mother, Gumball Watterson as the son, Anais Watterson as the sister and Darwin

Watterson that used to be the pet and now become the Wattersons. Secondly, as a

personal reason, this cartoon is different with the other cartoon, because the

characters of the cartoon are always giving ambiguous word in their conversation.

This ambiguous word can be analyzed by using non-observance maxims.

There is a researcher who has already conducted research about humor by

using pragmatics theories. One research from Septiyani (2014) discusses the violation

of two maxims. They are violation maxim of quantity and violation maxim of

relevance in Peanut comic strips. However, this research is different from her

research. The researcher does not only use one non-observance maxim but four non-

observance maxims (Grice, 1995; Dornerus, 2005; Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995).

They are violating maxim, opting out maxim, flouting maxim and infringing maxims.

The researcher also uses cartoon as the subject to be analyzed.

By conducting this research, the researcher believes the result of the finding

will be beneficial to the academic field, especially for English Language Education

Study Program students in the drama class or play performance class. This research

deals with pragmatics especially the use of non-observance maxims in the cartoon.

The researcher expects that from this research, students can learn the use of non-

observance maxims in creating humor both verbally and written. The researcher also

expects that from this research, lecturers can teach the students how to use non-

observance maxims both verbally and written.

B. Research Questions

There are two research questions that the researcher provides, they are:

1. What are the types of non-observance maxims in The Amazing World of

Gumball cartoon?

2. How frequent do the non-observance maxims occur to create comedy in The

Amazing World of Gumball cartoon?

C. Problem Limitation

The focus on this research is pragmatics in humor. There are studies and

theories in pragmatics that can be used to analyze humor. The researcher uses four

theories in this research. The first one is theory of conversational maxims that

consists of maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance and maxim of

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

5

manner. The second is the theory of non-observance maxims that includes violating

maxims, flouting maxims, opting out maxims and infringing maxims. The third is

theory of conversational implicature and the last is theory of benign violation in The

Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. This study only focuses on kind of the non-

observance maxims which can be seen in the conversation and how non-observance

maxims can make a humor effect in the conversation. The researcher uses 20

episodes of The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon which are considered to have

rich data for the purpose of the study from season 3 as the data. The researcher wants

to take the funniest films from the season 3. The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon

is different from other cartoons because the combination of the animation and choice

of words in this cartoon can make the audience laugh. That is why the researcher used

The Amazing of Gumball cartoon as an object to be analyzed.

D. Research Objectives

There are two objectives from this research. The first one is to know the types

of non-observance maxims that occur in the conversation in The Amazing World of

Gumball cartoon. The second one is to see the frequency of non-observance maxims

which can create comedy in the conversation in The Amazing World of Gumball

cartoon.

E. Research Benefits

This research hopefully will be beneficial for students, lecturers and also the

future researchers. There are benefits that they can get it, they are:

1. For Students

Students will know pragmatic study in daily life conversation, especially non-

observance maxims from Grice. The use of non-observance maxims for students,

especially for English Language Education students can help them to create comedy

scripts both in drama class and play performance class. Students may know and

understand how to create humor verbally or written and also a good conversation or

an effective conversation.

2. For Lecturers

Pragmatic study especially the use of non-observance maxims, can be

implemented not only in pragmatic class but also the other classes. Drama class and

play performance class can be used by lecturers to teach non-observance maxims for

students. Lecturers can teach the students how a good conversation or an effective

conversation can be created. Lecturers can also guide them in making the script,

especially for those who want to create comedy scripts.

3. For Future Researchers

This research can be a reference for the future researchers to do research in

pragmatic world, especially related to the Grice’s theory. This research can enrich the

researchers’ knowledge in pragmatics especially related to the Grice’s theory. The

7

researchers can do the research about humor by using different data, like other

cartoons, comic books or novels.

F. Definition of Terms

The terms that are used by the researcher to analyze humor in The Amazing

World of Gumball cartoon are conversational maxims, non-observance maxims,

cartoon itself, The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon and humor. The researcher

uses these terms because these terms are the main point to analyze humor in The

Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. The functions of these terms are used to help the

readers to understand the contents of this study.

1. Non-observance Maxims

In the non-observance maxim theory, if the conversation between the speaker

and the listener fails, it is called non-observance maxims. Grice (1995) states that

there are four non-observance maxims, they are violating maxims, flouting maxims,

opting out maxims and infringing maxims. In this study, the researcher finds the

humor from the cartoon by using non-observance maxims.

2. Conversational Maxims

According to Grice (1995), conversational maxims are the rules to guide

people in communication. There are four maxims from theory of conversation

maxims that Grice believes as a rule to guide people in communication, namely

maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. In a

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

8

conversation, what people need is accurate information from the speaker so the

listener will not get wrong information. If someone gets an accurate information, they

will trust you as the speaker.

In this research, the researcher uses conversational maxims in identifying the

data. To find the humor from the conversation, conversational maxims work with

non-observance maxims to find the humor from the conversation.

3. The Amazing World of Gumball Cartoon

The Amazing World of Gumball is a British–American animated television

series from cartoon network. Ben Bocquelet is the producer of this cartoon. This

cartoon is aired on the cable TV only. This cartoon has been aired 3 seasons with 112

episodes. The length of the videos are more or less 11 minutes. This cartoon is

popular among kids and teenagers nowadays. There are five characters on this

cartoon, they are Gumball Watterson, Darwin Watterson, Anais Watterson, Richard

Watterson, and Nicole Watterson. The researcher believes that The Amazing World of

Gumball has rich data to be analyzed.

4. Humor

Humor is a part of human life. People usually use it to reduce their stress from

their daily life activity. Attardo (1994) states “humor to be an all-encompassing

category, covering any event or object that elicits laughter, amuses, or is felt to be

funny”.

The details of those terms are found in the following chapter. The next chapter

discusses the review of related literature.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter reviews the theories which are used as the framework for this

study that applied pragmatics in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. In this

chapter, the researcher will divide this chapter into two parts. They are: theoretical

description and theoretical framework. The first part reviews the relevant theories on

theory of conversational maxims, theory of non-observance maxims, theory of

conversational implicature, theory of humor and theory of benign violation. The

second part of this chapter reviews the summary of those theories which are helpful

to analyze the problem.

A. Theoretical Description

There are five theories discussed in this research. They are theory of

conversational maxims, theory of non-observance maxims, theory of conversational

implicature, theory of humor and theory of benign violation. Theory of non-

observance maxims, conversational maxims, conversational implicature, humor

become the main point of this research to analyze humor effect from the dialogue and

also to find types of maxims that appear in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon.

Those four theories help the researcher to answer the research. The last theory

which is theory of benign violation becomes the support theory to analyze the films.

1. Theory of Conversational Maxims

Conversation is the form of interaction between two or more people to

develop social development in social life. In the conversation, it is important for

people who are having conversation to give accurate information to the listener.

Therefore, they will have a good conversation. Grice (1995) suggests that

conversation is based on the cooperative principle and he stated, “Make your

conversational contribution what is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the

accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.” (p.26).

According to Grice (1995), there are four maxims that work in this principle. They

are, maxim of quality means try to make the contribution that is true. People cannot

give false information and say if it is lack evidence. Maxim of quantity means to

make the contribution as informative as required (for the current purposes of the

exchange). The contribution should not be more informative and less informative

than is required. Maxim of relevance means be relevant, while maxim of manner

must be perspicuous. In other words, the contribution from this maxim are avoiding

obscurity of expression, avoiding ambiguity, being brief and being orderly.

Good conversation happens when the speaker follows those four maxims.

Those four maxims can help the speaker to have good conversation with others. The

information that the speaker gives must be true, be informative as required, be

relevant and be perspicuous, so the listener will get correct information from the

speaker.

2. Theory of Non-observance Maxims

In having daily conversation with someone, the speaker does not know

whether he or she follows the rules or fail to observe the maxims. Non-observance

maxims happens when someone fails to observe the maxims (Thomas, 1995). He also

states that non-observance maxims are often used to show the humors parts from the

conversation. There are four ways that someone may fail in observing the maxims,

they are violating maxim, opting out maxim, infringing maxims and flouting maxim

(Grice, 1995; Dornerus, 2005; Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995).

a. Violating Maxims

According to Dornerus (2005), someone or the speaker will be responsible to

mislead the others. What Dornerus wants to say is that in violating the maxim the

speaker has plan to mislead the listener. Violating maxim is one of the example

which is not an effective communication in the conversation, because it will make

someone or the listener believes something that is not true. Dornerus (2005) says

violating maxim can be found in the conversation or it can be found in the form of

advertisement on the street. Here is the example of violating maxim in a form of

advertisement:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Figure 2.1 Advertisement from department store

The advertisement above shows that there is 50% discount, plus 20% discount in that

department store. However, there is a condition applied. To get the 20% discount,

people must buy something in that department with the minimum purchase of Rp

200.000 and have MCC card (member of Matahari department store). This

advertisement can mislead someone because the condition to get more 20% discount

is written with small size font. If someone does not pay attention to the advertisement

well, they will be trapped by the advertisement.

Attardo (1994) says that violating maxims can make humor effect in the

conversation. Here are the examples of violating maxim in the conversation:

Table 2.1 Types of Violating Maxims (Dornerus, 2005)

1. Violating Maxim of Quality:

Dialogue:

[Edie and Susan go to a cowboy bar with a mechanical bull, to try to spy on Mike and

Kindra in order to see if there is something going on between them or not. Mike sees

them and confronts Susan, he asks her if she is there to spy on him and when she

denies this, he says:]

No. Types of violating

maxims

Meaning Examples

1. Violating Maxim of

Quality

People or the speaker will

fail to mention about the

relevant information, but

the listener will assume that

he or she gets enough

information

Mike: Kindra and I

are just friends.

Susan: And I came

here to ride the bull.

2. Violating Maxim of

Quantity

The speaker will say

something that the listener

knows to be false, but the

listener will believe in what

the speaker said

Mike: I know how

this looks but there is

nothing between us,

Kindra is just an old

friend.

Susan: Old friend?

Mike: Yeah, you

know 3. Violating Maxim of

Manner

People will use repeating

information or many words

to the listener, but the

listener will assume that

there is more being

communicated than there

actually is

Bree: Did you offer to

help Danielle into

modeling school?

Gabi: What? Yes,

no, is that how she

took it?

4.

Violating Maxim of

Relevance

People will say something

which is not relevant, but

the listener will assume that

he or she gets the relevant

information

Bree: Yes. Gabrielle,

did you or did you not

offer to sponsor her?

Gabi: I just wanted

to help out.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

15

Mike: Kindra and I are just friends.

Susan: And I came here to ride the bull.

In this dialogue Susan is violating maxim of quality because she is trying to

tell a lie to Mike. She does not give the true answer to Mike. She tries to convince

Mike that she only rides a mechanical bull not to spy them.

2. Violating Maxim of Quantity:

Dialogue:

[Susan and Mike have recently kissed for the first time after a long time of flirting.

She walks over to his house to pick him up for their first big date when she sees

another woman there. Mike meets her on the veranda and cancels their date. He

begins to explain:]

Mike: I know how this looks but there is nothing

between us, Kindra is just an old friend.

Susan: Old friend?

Mike: Yeah, you know

From the dialogue, Mike is violating maxim of quantity because he does not

give the right amount of information to Susan and he tries to mislead Susan. He is

violating maxim of quantity by saying “Yeah, you know”. Susan thinks there is

nothing more to know from Mike. By violating this maxim, he looks like a

mysterious man.

3. Violating Maxim of Manner:

Dialogue:

[Gabi offers to help sponsoring Bree’s daughter Danielle to get into modeling school

but without the permission from Bree. Bree gets furious and goes over to Gabi to

confront her.]

Bree: Did you offer to help Danielle into modeling school?

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 30: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

16

Gabi: What? Yes, no, is that how she took it?

In this dialogue Gabi is violating maxim of manner. Gabi is violating maxim

of manner because she gives a confusing answer to Bree. Gabi does not give a brief

answer to Bree. Gabi misleads Bree into thinking that she had nothing to do with.

4. Violating Maxim of Relevance:

Dialogue:

[Gabi has offered to sponsor Bree’s daughter’s modeling career by helping offering

her a place at a modeling school in New York. In that way she will stay away from

Gabi’s lover John. When Bree finds out she is a furious; she wants her daughter at

home.]

Bree: Yes. Gabrielle, did you or did you not offer to sponsor her?

Gabi: I just wanted to help out.

From the conversation, Gabi is violating maxim of relevance because she

gives irrelevant answer to Bree in order to save her friendship with Bree. This

conversation only makes her look helpless but actually Gabi is trying to be a good

friend for her by trying to get Danielle out of the way. Gabi is violating this maxim

by convincing Bree about her goodness.

b. Flouting Maxims

Flouting maxims are different from the violating maxims. Maxims can be

violated, which means that they are not adhered to. Violation maxims happens for

instance when someone is liable to mislead someone. In flouting maxims, Levinson

(1987) says the person doesn’t intend to mislead the person who hear it, but wants to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

17

see the person who hear or see another meaning from the word that the speaker talk.

There are several examples in flouting the maxims, they are:

Table 2.2 Types of Flouting Maxims (Levinson, 1987)

1. Flouting Maxim of Quality:

Dialogue:

A: Teheran’s in Turkey isn’t it, teacher?

B: And London’s in Armenia I suppose

No.

Types of flouting

maxims

Meaning Examples

1. Flouting maxim of

Quality

happens when the

speaker gets the

information from the

speaker that he/she

knows to be untrue

A: Teheran’s in Turkey isn’t it,

teacher?

B: And London’s in Armenia

2. Flouting Maxim of

Quantity

happens when

someone or the

speaker gives less or

more information

- War is war.

- Either John will come or he

won’t

- If he does it, he does it

3. Flouting Maxim of

Manner

happens when the

speaker gives the

information which is

ambiguous

- Miss Singer produced a

series of sounds

corresponding closely to the

score of an aria from

Rigoletto

- Miss Singer sang an aria

4.

Flouting Maxim of

Relevance

happens when

someone or the

speaker gives the

irrelevant information

to the listener

Johnny?

18

In this conversation, B’s utterance means that B wants A to know that A gives

the wrong answer. B uses other words to say that A’s answer is wrong. B does not

say directly to A that A’s answer is wrong.

2. Flouting Maxim of Quantity:

(1) War is war.

(2) Either John will come or he won’t.

(3) If he does it, he does it.

In case (1), it might be concluded that in the middle of war, terrible things

always happen, and that is its nature and it is not good lamenting in that situation; In

case (2) it might be concluded that the person should calm down, because there is

nothing that person do whether he is going to come or not; In case (3), it might be it is

not our concern.

3. Flouting Maxim of Manner:

(1) Miss Singer produced a series of sounds corresponding closely to the

score of an aria from Rigoletto.

(2) Miss Singer sang an aria from Rigoletto.

In the case (1) that sentence is flouting maxim manner because that sentence

breaks the sub-maxim ‘be brief’ from maxim of manner. Case (2) is the simple

answer that can be made from case (1).

4. Flouting Maxim of Relevance:

Dialogue:

Johnny: Hey Sally let’s play marbles.

Mother: How is your homework getting along Johnny?

19

In this conversation, Johnny’s mother is flouting maxim of relevance. From

the example, Johnny’s mother cuts the conversation between Johnny and Sally by

telling Johnny about his homework. What Levinson wants to explain in this

conversation is that this is not the conversation between two persons directly, but

what Levinson wants to emphasize in this conversation is that the irrelevant respond

from Johnny’s mother can create flouting maxims of relevance. Actually, Johnny’s

mother can directly say to Johnny not to play with Sally, but Johnny’s mother

responds with asking his homework to Johnny.

c. Opting Out Maxims

According to Thomas (1995), the meaning of opting out the maxim is when

people do not want to corporate with others and when others need to have the

information. In this case, the speaker or someone only gives less information that

he/she already has. There are several responses in opting out the maxims. They are

opting out of quantity, for examples: my lips are sealed, I cannot say more; Opting

out of quality, for examples: I am not sure, but I think….; Opting out of manner, for

example: I do not know how to say this more simply….; Opting out of Relation, for

example: I do not know if this answers your questions….

Thomas (1995) says that “the example of opting out occurs frequently in

public life, when the speaker cannot, perhaps for legal or ethical reason, reply in the

way normally expected. The speaker usually wishes to avoid generating a false

implicature or appearing uncooperative” (p 74). It is clear that opting out the maxims

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 34: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

20

usually happens in public life. For example, a conversation which is found in the

hospital:

[There is a man who got serious injury on his head

because of an accident on the road. His sister asked to

the doctor about his condition now.]

Jean : Doctor, how was the condition of my brother?

Doctor : I cannot say more.

In this case, the doctor does not want to tell the condition of Jean’s brother.

The doctor wants to keep the information secretly. In this conversation, opting out

maxim of quantity is used.

d. Infringing Maxims

Grice (1995) states that someone may violate one maxim in order to preserve

another. For example:

A: Where does C live?

B: Somewhere in the South of France

This conversation uses violating maxim of quantity. In this case, there is clash

between two maxims, they are maxim of quantity and quality. In this conversation, B

gives weak information and also less information. B does not know where the

specific location is and he gives less information without violating maxim of quality.

3. Theory of Conversational Implicature

According to Levinson (1987), implicature is a component of speaker

meaning that constitutes an aspect of what is meant in a speaker’s utterance without

being part of what is said. There are two types of implicature. They are conventional

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 35: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

21

implicature and conversational implicature. Levinson (1987) states that

conversational implicature is related to the certain general features of discourse.

Implicature, cooperative principle and the four maxims are related each other. The

function of cooperative principle and the four maxims are to make good and effective

conversations, for example:

A: Do you see my pudding in the refrigerator? I put my pudding yesterday..

B: Wow today is so hot..

From the example above, B is flouting maxim of relation, because B gives irrelevant

answer to A. B uses another word because B does not want to answer directly to A.

Actually, B wants to avoid A’s question by giving irrelevant information. It implies

that B does not want to answer and avoid A’s question by giving an irrelevant answer

to the A.

4. Benign Violation Theory

Benign violation theory actually came from N+V theory that was developed

by Veatch (as cited in McGraw and Warner, 2014). He states that “the idea that

humor occurs when someone perceives a situation is a violation of a ‘subjective

moral principle’ (V) while simultaneously realizing that the situation is normal (N)”

(as cited in McGraw & Warner, 2014, p.8). Because there is no one who paid much

attention to his theory, then McGraw with Warren developed Veatch’s theory became

benign violation theory. There are three things in this theory that can create humor:

(1) The situation is benign, (2) The situation is a violation (3) Both situation happen

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 36: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

22

simultaneously (as cited in McGraw & Warner, 2014). Situation is benign when it

seems okay, acceptable or safe and the situation is a violation when it seems wrong,

unsettling or threatening. McGraw and Warner (2014) believe that the situation

becomes funny when those two situations happen simultaneously. Here is the venn

diagram:

Figure 2.2 Benign Violation Venn (as cited in McGraw & Warner, 2014, 10)

This theory explains that the things are funny when situation is benign,

situation is a violation and those situations happen simultaneously. If the benign

situation and violation do not happen simultaneously, it will not create a humor. Here

is the example of benign violation:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Figure 2.3 Love letter from a kid to his mother

From that letter, what the kid wants to explain is that he does not want to have

another mother or step mother. If he has step mother, he will punch his step mother

and find the original one. So in this example, the situation is benign and it has

violation; it creates humor from that letter. Venn diagram from the Figure 2.3 will be

like this.

Figure 2.4 Diagram Venn Love Letter

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 38: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

24

In this case, the situation is benign when he loves his mother so much. Then, the

situation is a violation when he does not want to have another mother and want to

punch if he has another mother or stepmother. Those situation will create humor if

they happen simultaneously.

5. Theory of Humor

Attardo (1994) believes that humor can be produced from any event or object

that elicits laughter, amuses and also what people felt to be funny. Humor is useful

for people to reduce their stress from daily life activity. Wilson states:

“Humour, as it is felt by people, has personal functions such as relieving

one’s tension or repressed feelings, boosting friendship, and reducing

hostilities. It also has social functions since it can be a powerful means

of reinforcing the ideal ideology, power, status, morality, norms, and

values within a society.” (1979, pp. 226-231)

Attardo (1994) believes that humor involves violation of one or more of Grice’s

maxims. It means that humor can be produced if one or more non-observance maxims

appears.

B. Theoretical Framework

There were two theories used to analyze the first research question. They were

theory of conversational maxims and non-observance maxims (Grice, 1995;

Dornerus, 2005; Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995). The first research question is about

the types of the non-observance maxims. This question was answered by using theory

of conversational maxims, non-observance maxims, implicature and benign violation

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 39: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

25

theory. Grice (1995) says theory of conversational maxims, which consists of maxim

of quality, maxim of relevance, maxim quantity and maxim of manner supported

theory of non-observance maxims. The theory of non-observance maxims consist of

violating maxims, flouting maxims, opting out maxims and infringing maxims

(Grice, 1995; Dornerus, 2005; Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995). Levinson (1987) says

implicature is used to know the meaning behind the conversation. In this research,

implicature is used to help the researcher to know the meaning that implies in the

conversation, so the researcher can analyze the meaning from the conversation itself.

The second research question is about how frequent the four maxims are

broken to create humor in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon? In analyzing this

movie, first, the researcher used the conversational maxims that is shown in the

cartoon. Grice (1995) states conversational maxims are divided into four, they are

maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Those

maxims helped the researcher to categorize kind of maxim in the conversation.

Second, types of non-observance maxims were used by the researcher in analyzing

the conversation in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. Theory of non-

observance maxims consist of violating maxims, flouting maxims, opting out maxims

and infringing maxims. Theory of non-observance maxims help the researcher to

analyze the conversation (Grice, 1995). And the last, theory of benign violation from

McGraw and Warren (as cited in McGraw and Warner, 2014) to support other

theories.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the researcher discusses the methodology that is used to

answer the two research problems. The discussion that the researcher discussed are

the research method, the research subject, the instruments and data gathering

technique, the data analysis technique and the research procedures.

A. Research Method

This research used mixed method. Naggy and Hesse-Biber (2010) state

“mixed methods employ a research design that uses both quantitative and qualitative

data to answer a particular question or set of questions” (p. 3). In mixed methods,

both qualitative and quantitative method are used at the same time to answer the

questions. Naggy and Hesse-Biber (2010) also state:

“qualitative data – “words, pictures, and narrative”- can be combined

with quantitative, numerical data from a larger scale study on the same

issue, allowing our research results to be generalized for future studies

and examinations.” (p.3)

The combination of qualitative and quantitative data can be used in the research to

get the results.

The researcher used document analysis method to analyze the data. According

to Ary, Jacobs, Sorensen and Razavieh (2010), “Content or document analysis is a

research method applied to written or visual materials for the purpose of identifying

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 42: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

28

specified characteristics of the material” (p. 457). Document analysis method was

used when the researcher would like to analyze physical document in the form of

written or visual (Ary, Jacobs, Sorensen & Razavieh, 2010). The researcher used

transcripts of the movie from the internet as the data.

B. Research Setting

The researcher conducted this research from February, 2015 to July, 2015.

The researcher did this research in Yogyakarta by conducting library study.

C. Research Data

The Amazing World of Gumball is a British–American animated television

series created by Ben Bocquelet and produced by Cartoon Network. The genre of the

film is comedy and fantasy. It was first aired on May 3, 2011. This film has aired 3

seasons with 112 episodes in total. The length of each episode is 11 minutes. The

story is about the life of The Wattersons. The Wattersons live in the Elmore. Gumball

Watterson, a 12-year-old cat who attends middle school in Elmore and he is

accompanied by adoptive goldfish brother as his best friend named Darwin. They

have one sister named Anais. She is the smartest child in Watterson. Nicole

Watterson as the mother and Richard Watterson as the father.

29

D. Research Instruments

The researcher as a human instrument became the primary instrument in

gathering and analyzing the data (Merriam, 2002; Creswell, 2007; Ary, Jacobs,

Sorensen & Razavieh, 2010). The researcher categorized kinds of non-observance

maxims applied in the conversation. To get the data, the researcher used four sources,

they were scripts, the video from the internet and video player. Those four sources

were also used to help the researcher to analyze the data.

1. GOM Player

The researcher used GOM Player to play the video. The researcher used GOM

Player because it was easy to use. Features from GOM Player were easy to be used,

like shortcut keys. Shortcut keys were used to play, stop, open subtitles, set the

playback speed and increase or decrease the volume. The researcher used playback

speed feature in typing the conversation from the video. Playback speed feature was

one of the features from GOM Player to set the speed of the video. The researcher

used it to decrease the speed. Next, the researcher used GOM Player because the

volume of the video can be increased up to 200%. It was useful because some of the

videos have low quality audio. This feature helped the researcher listens to the video

clearly.

2. The Scripts

The researcher used the retyped script. First, the researcher took the scripts

from the internet. Then, the researcher watched the videos more or less fifty times to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 44: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

30

understand the story, complete the missing dialogues and change the wrong word into

the good one. The transcripts were attached in the Appendices 2, 3 and 4.

3. Videos

For the video, because The Amazing World of Gumball only shows on the

cable TV in Cartoon Network, the researcher used the internet to download The

Amazing World of Gumball cartoon season 3. The researcher took the cartoon from

season 3 only because it was a new season and it was easier to be downloaded rather

than season 1 and 2. There are 36 episodes until now on The Amazing World of

Gumball cartoon season 3. However, the researcher only took 20 episodes from

season 3 on purpose. The researcher decided to take randomly because the researcher

tried to find the episode that was rich for the analysis. It made easier for the

researcher to analyze the cartoon.

E. Data Analysis Technique

The researcher analyzed the movie transcripts by watching the video and then

the researcher typed the conversation. Then, the researcher analyzed the data into

four categories of non-observance maxims. Those four categories include flouting

maxims, violating maxims, maxims clash and opting out maxims was introduced by

Grice (1995: 30). There are four maxims which are introduced by Grice, they are

maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner and maxim of relation (1995:

28). Maxim of Quality: Try to make the contribution that is true. Maxim of Quantity:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 45: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

31

Make the contribution as informative as required (for the current purposes of the

exchange). Maxim of Relation: Try to be relevant. Maxim of Manner: Try to be

perspicuous.

The researcher found out the frequency of the occurrence from each non-

observance maxims. The researcher analyzed the frequency of non-observance

maxims by deciding the highest frequency of the occurrence from each non-

observance maxim. Then, the researcher explained the types of non-observance

maxims that appeared in this cartoon by using the format that the researcher has

made. After that, the researcher made the conclusion.

F. Research Procedure

In this chapter, the researcher explains the steps in conducting the research,

they are:

1. Choosing the videos

In choosing the videos, the researcher took the videos from The Amazing

World of Gmball cartoon season 3 only. There are 36 episodes and the researcher

already watched all episodes. Thus, the researcher only took the videos that were rich

to be analyzed. The researcher took 20 episodes only.

2. Taking the script

For the scripts, the researcher used retyped scripts. The researcher took the

scripts from the internet and there were several scripts that were not complete. The

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

researcher completed the missing dialogues by listening the dialogues again and

typing the missing dialogues. The researcher also adjusted some dialogues, which

were ungrammatical construction, for example the word “more” should be “last”. The

researcher watched the film more or less fifty times each episode.

3. Classifying the conversations

In classifying the conversations, the researcher chose the conversations which

were funny from those 20 episodes. The researcher also watched the film and read the

scripts. After that, the researcher classified the conversation that had humor.

4. Identifying the conversations

The researcher wanted to identify the sentence which broke the maxims.

There are four non-observance maxims that the researcher used in identifying the

conversations. The researcher used the non-observance maxims and also theory of

humor in identifying the conversations.

5. Calculating the appearance of non-observance maxims in the conversation

The researcher calculated the appearance of non-observance maxims in the

conversation. The researcher calculated the data to get the percentage of the

appearance of non-observance maxims. The researcher formulated the formula. Here

is the formula:

The appearance of non − observance maxims (flouting, opting out, infringing, violating)

The total of the appearance of non − observance maxims 𝑋 100%

6. Analyzing non-observance maxims in the conversation

After identifying the dialogues which consisted of the non-observance

maxims, the researcher analyzed types of the non-observance maxims which

consisted of the violating maxims, the flouting maxims, the opting out maxims and

the infringing maxims that produced funny conversation. There were four maxims

that the researcher used. They were maxim of quality, quantity, manner and relation.

Those four maxim which were introduced by Grice (1995) were used by the

researcher to analyze non-observance maxims. The researcher also used benign

violation theory to support the non-observance maxims theory. In analyzing the non-

observance maxims in the conversation, the researcher had a format to analyze it.

Here is the format:

In analyzing the conversation by using benign violation theory, the researcher used

another format to analyze the conversation. Here is the format:

7. Making conclusions

After the process of analyzing, the researcher made the conclusions. The last

step in this research was the researcher analyzed the data from the result that the

researcher obtained. The researcher decided the highest frequency of occurrence of

non-observance maxims from the The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. After that,

the researcher analyzed the videos by using the format that the researcher made. After

knowing the result, the researcher made the conclusion. Then, the readers will know

how the non-observance maxims can create a humor. The result of the data were used

to answer two research questions that the researcher formulated in the previous

chapter.

In this chapter discussed the method to answer two research questions. They

are 1) What are the types of non-observance maxims in The Amazing World of

Gumball cartoon? 2) How frequent do the non-observance maxims occur to create

CHAPTER IV

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter discusses the research findings. In this chapter, the researcher

only focuses on how non-observance maxims in the cartoon entitled The Amazing

World of Gumball is applied and how theory benign violation is applied in the

dialogues. The researcher analyzed kind of non-observance maxims that appears in

the dialogues and also the implicature from the dialogues. Two main problems on this

research are answered based on the findings that the researcher obtained.

To show the result of the findings which applied in The Amazing World of

Gumball cartoon, the researcher discusses the findings in the next paragraph.

A. The Types of Non-Observance Maxims

In this part, the researcher gives 25 dialogues, but the researcher only provides

8 examples of the dialogues. The complete 25 dialogues were presented in appendix

1. The researcher only provided small dialogues from the cartoon and also the

analysis from it in the following paragraph.

a. Violating Maxims

In violating maxims, the speaker may tell other people that the speaker knows

to be false, gave irrelevant information, fails to mention the information enough, and

uses and repeat many words. These non-observance maxims were different from

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 51: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

37

flouting maxims. In violating maxims, the person who gave information is intended

to give someone information that is not true. Based on the findings, this breaking

maxim mostly showed in the dialogues and create the humor. The researcher showed

the violating of maxims which showed in the dialogues. There were four maxim

based on Grice (1995), and for this breaking maxim only three which showed. They

were violating maxim of quality, violating maxim of quantity and violating maxim of

relevance. Violating maxim of manner did not appear in this cartoon. The use of

violating maxim could create the humor.

1.) Violating Maxim of Quality

In this case, the person intends to give false information to others, but the

others will believe with the information that the person gives. Dornerus (2005) states

someone may violates maxim of quality, if someone may tell false information to

other people but actually the person who tell the information know to be false. Here,

there was dialogue on The Amazing World of Gumball which used violating maxim

of quality by telling that the person know to be false:

Dialogue 1:

[Gumball and Darwin is chasing Sarah because they want to explain about they feel.

Then, Gumball and Darwin take off after her trail. Sarah is trapped in the dead end

of a hallway, and the brothers corner her. Sarah hears them, gasps, and pretends to

be distressed as they arrive]

Gumball : Sarah, listen-

Sarah : I know what you're gonna say. I'm sorry about the hair.

Gumball : Eh-what? What hair? [He turns around, revealing a spot of

Shaved hair behind his head] Is there something wrong with

my hair?

Sarah : Nooooo. [Smiles]

Page 52: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

38

In this episode, Sarah is obsessed with Gumball and Darwin. She wants to be

noticed by Gumball and Darwin, but they feel annoyed because of her. Gumball and

Darwin want to explain their feeling to her but she is running away. They try to chase

her because they want to explain something. In this conversation, Sarah is violating

maxim of quality because in this scene Sarah is obsessed with Gumball and Darwin,

Sarah take a small piece of Gumball’s hair but Gumball doesn’t know that his hair

was taken by Sarah and there was a spot of shaved hair behind his head. Sarah

doesn’t want Gumball knows about condition of his hair and she tells the information

that she knows to be false.

The next example from violating maxim of quality is when someone gives

information with lack of knowledge or information to others:

Dialogue 2:

[The film starts when their mother tells to Gumball and Darwin as a procrastinator]

Darwin: Wait, what?

Nicole : You are procrastinators.

Darwin : What does that mean?

Gumball : Procrastinators: derived from the Mexican word,

"Procratalamation" which means mid-night snack, and the

Viking word "Astinator" which means puckered cheese. It

describes a person who sits on a sandwich in the dark.

Darwin : [confusingly stares at gumball]

In this scene, Nicole, their mother, tells to both of Gumball and Darwin that

they are a procrastinator. Darwin does not know the meaning of the word

procrastinator. Then, Gumball tries to explain the meaning of the word procrastinator,

but actually he explains the wrong meaning. Gumball cannot answer Darwin question

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

39

with a right answer because Gumball is lack of knowledge. Procrastinator itself

means a person who always avoids his/her responsibility by doing something else

instead. Here, Gumball is violating maxim of quality by giving a wrong answer.

2.) Violating Maxim of Relevance

In this case, the speaker is trying to mislead others by giving irrelevant

information. Here is the case of violating maxim of relevance when the speaker gives

irrelevant information:

Dialogue 3:

[The turtle is burned because of strong sunlight, Gumball, Darwin, Anais and His

Father, Richard pray for the turtle]

Darwin : Before we say goodbye to our beloved family pet, evil turtle. I think

we should all say a few word to let know just how much he meant to

us. I always think fondly of the way he put fear into my heart.

Anais : Everytime I stood down at the scar tissue on my hand, I think of him

Richard : Only once in your life time does something touch your heart in

the way that “awesome store” did.

Gumball : Dad, you’ve got to move on

Violating maxim of relevance or usually called violating maxim of relation

happens when someone gives the irrelevant information to others (Dornerus, 2005).

In this scene, their pet, evil turtle, is burned because Darwin puts the turtle outside.

Gumball, Darwin, Anais and Richard are praying for the turtle. In this scene everyone

has a chance to reveal something to the turtle. Richard is giving an irrelevant answer

by praying for “awesome store” not the turtle. Richard is trying to mislead Gumball

that Richard is still sad because he is losing the “awesome store” and Gumball is

reacting to what Richard said. Richard’s answer is violating maxim of quality.

3.) Violating Maxim of Quantity

In violating maxim of quantity, people will violate this maxim if they give too

much or less information. Here is the case of violating maxim of quantity that

someone gives too much information to others:

Dialogue 4:

[Gumball and Anais walk towards the entrance to Darwin's lair.]

Gumball : Ugh! We need a code. How are we gonna get that?

Anais : Don't worry. I have my

ways. [Types] H [Types] A [Types] C [Types] K: Hack. Press enter.

[The door opens. ]

Gumball : Really? "Hack"?

Anais : Just kidding. Actually, I bypassed the storage controller, tapped

directly into the V and X array head, decrypted the neoline SAS

disk–

Gumball : [Nods] Mhm. [Nods] Mhm. [Nods] Mhm.

Anais : Injected the flash drivers into the network's fiber pack, before

disabling the IDS, brought in incoming traffic to a bunch of short

proxies–

Gumball : [Steps back and nods.] Mhm. Mhm.

Anais : Accessed the ESXI server plus during the primal digi-centre, and

disabled the inter-V stand routing in the layer three–

[Gumball leaves Anais, and sees Darwin in his "lair," smiling almost innocently.]

In this episode, Darwin wants to make everyone safe and he makes the world

of safety because he does not want everyone gets hurt. Gumball and family want to

save Darwin who rules the world of safety. In this scene, Gumball and Anais have

entered to Darwin’s lair. They cannot get in because the door is locked with

password. Because Anais is a smart girl, she can unlock the door easily. Gumball is

shocked because Anais can open the door easily, when Gumball wants to convince

that the password is only “hack”, Anais gives much information to Gumball. She

41

violates maxims of quantity, because she gives too much information to Gumball that

actually he does not need that much.

b. Flouting Maxims

In this cartoon, the researcher found 12 dialogues which broke the maxims.

Levinson (1987) says that if people are flouting the maxim, they expect the listener to

know and notice that is intended from them. In this breaking maxim, the speaker does

not want to mislead others, but the speaker wants the other to know that the speaker

has a purpose in giving the information.

There were several dialogues which flouted the maxims. In this non-

observance maxims, all maxims were broken, those were maxim of quality, quantity,

relation and manner. This flouting maxims also created the humor, even it was not

mostly used in this cartoon. The findings of flouting maxim can be found in the next

paragraph.

1.) Flouting Maxim of Quality

People sometimes use irony, hyperbole, meiosis and metaphor in flouting this

maxim. They want the listener expect something else from the speaker said. Here is

the example of flouting maxim of quality:

Dialogue 5:

[The trio open the box and are grossed out at what they see]

Anais : Ugh. What is that? It looks like an angry, green hat.

Gumball : Nah, more like a very mean, old man carrying a sad house on his

back.

Darwin : Myeeh, or like an evil wiener poking out of a ravioli.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 56: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

42

In flouting maxim of quality, people have a reason on what they believe to be

false or to avoid falsehood (Levinson, 1987). In this episode, Gumball, Darwin and

Anais want to have a puppy. They are trying to persuade his father by explaining his

father the advantages in having a puppy. Therefore, his father, Richard buys a turtle

for them. In this scene, they open the box and they are shocked because when they

see inside the box, there is no puppy there but a turtle. They are grossed with what

they see and actually they do not want to keep the turtle in the house. Gumball and

Darwin are flouting maxim of quality because Gumball and Darwin describe the

turtle by using another word. Here, Gumball and Darwin describe the turtle as a very

ugly and very bad turtle.

2.) Flouting Maxim of Quantity

The speaker who is flouting maxim of quantity, wants the hearer know the

meaning from what speaker said. Levinson (1987) says people may give the

information as much as is required and also less than that is required. The speaker

who is flouting maxim of quantity, gives less information or much information.

Example from flouting maxim of quantity can be seen on the dialogue:

Dialogue 6:

[She turns on the TV to a Pokemon-like show.]

Anais : So, will you take me to the movie this weekend?

[The show flashes a "YES" on screen.]

Gumball : No.

Anais : What!? What about the subliminal message?

Gumball : Sorry. I don't understand Japanese.

Anais : Oh, come on!

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 57: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

43

Gumball : Look. I don't want my little sister to be traumatized, 'kay?

Anais : This is girlist!

Gumball : What? No! It's because you're four!

Anais : Then, it's ageist!

Gumball : No! It's just-you'll-be-so-freaked-out-by-seeing-the-movie-that-

you'll-be-a-pain-in-the-butt-for-a-month-ist!

From the dialogue, Gumball is flouting maxim of quantity. He gives much

information than it is required. Gumball wants to say his sister that is a person who

freaks out. He uses a long term to describe a freak-out person. Actually, from The

Free Dictionary, a person who freaks out can be called as a freaked out person.

3.) Flouting Maxim of Manner

In flouting maxim of manner, people who flout the maxim of manner, they do

not give the information orderly and briefly. The speakers have a meaning not to give

the information orderly and briefly. Here is the dialogue between Anais and Gumball:

Dialogue 7:

Gumball stays still for a short time before his tail starts moving. Soon, his legs then

arms start moving. A shaky and wildly moving Gumball goes down to the kitchen,

grabs a pan, and sits with his siblings at the couch. After that Darwin is hitting

Gumball’s head and Gumball says:

Gumball : Come on, man. What are you -- vegan? Just bring it. [Darwin hits

Gumball's head a little bit faster with the pan.] That was exactly hard

enough to hurt as much as possible without knocking me out. You

couldn't have done it worse. Just try again. Remember, it's all in the

hips. Twist and strike. Twist -- [Darwin hits Gumball's head very

hard with the pan. And Gumball's head's shape changes.] OW! Why

am I not unconscious yet?!

Anais : You need your brain to touch your skull in order to pass out.

Gumball : Are you saying I've got a small brain?

Anais : Yes, but I'm also saying you have a massive, clinically oversized,

monumental head.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 58: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

44

Gumball : Is it really that big? 'Cause all I can see in the mirror is this.

[Gumball crops his face with his hands.]

Levinson (1987) states that people must tell the information orderly and briefly. In

this episode, Gumball is scared because his future has been predicted by Banana Joe’s

mom. Banana Joe’s mom drew a picture one year ago and the picture was sold in the

garage sell. Gumball wants to avoid the prediction of her future. He tries many things

to avoid the future. In this scene, Gumball tries not to move a muscle but he cannot

do that. Gumball asks Darwin to hit his head so that Gumball can stop moving. In

this dialogue, Anais is flouting maxim of manner because she does not give the

information briefly. Actually, Anais wants to infer that Gumball’s head is big but she

repeats the word even with different word but has the same meaning of “big”.

4.) Flouting Maxim of Relevance

In the flouting maxim of relevance, the speaker does not want to give the

information directly, but the speaker gives the irrelevant information to the listener.

Flouting maxim of relation or relevance happens when the person is telling the

information which is irrelevant (Levinson, 1987). The irrelevant information from the

speaker has a meaning. Below is the example of flouting maxim of relevance

Dialogue 8:

[Outside the school, Gumball breathes close to Alan. Then he grabs him, and bang

heads together.]

Gumball : HOW CAN YOU NOT BE ANGRY AFTER ALL I'VE DONE TO

YOU?! [Gasps] After all I've done to you. I made you lose all your

friends, your girlfriend, sold your parents. Even worse, I ate your last

meatball -- all of this to prove you can be just as bad as me? Could it

be that… that… that I was wrong?

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 59: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

45

Darwin : IS THAT EVEN A QUESTION?!

Gumball : Oh, thanks, man. I almost doubted myself there.

Darwin : [Sighs]

In this episode, Gumball wants to make Alan lost his temper by doing crazy things. In

this scene Gumball realizes that what he has done is wrong and he reflects himself.

From the dialogue, Darwin is angry with Gumball from what he has done to his

friend, Alan. Darwin is flouting maxim of relation because what Darwin wants to say

to Gumball that he is wrong and he should not have to make a question anymore.

Darwin gives irrelevant information to Gumball and he expects that Gumball realizes.

Based on the findings, violating maxims and flouting maxims had an

important role in creating humor effect and the use of implicature really helped the

researcher to find the meaning behind the word that the character said. There are 13

violating maxims and 12 flouting maxims.

c. The Use of Benign Violation Theory from The Non-observance Maxims

In this theory, McGraw and Warren (as cited in McGraw and Warner, 2014)

believe that humor can be produced if the situation is benign and the violation happen

simultaneously. This theory can be used to support non-observance maxims theory in

analyzing the data, whether the non-observance maxims make humor or not. The

researcher takes two examples from violating maxim and flouting maxim to prove

that the dialogue are funny. Here is an example of the dialogue from violating maxim

of quality:

Dialogue 1:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

[The film starts]

Darwin: Wait, what?

Nicole : You are procrastinators.

Darwin : What does that mean?

Gumball : Procrastinators: derived from the Mexican word,

"Procratalamation" which means mid-night snack, and the

Viking word "Astinator" which means puckered cheese. It

describes a person who sits on a sandwich in the dark. Darwin : [confusingly stares at gumball]

From this dialogue, Gumball is not telling the truth because he is lack of

knowledge. This dialogue becomes funny because Gumball with confident gives the

information to Darwin as if Gumball knows the word exactly, but actually the

information that is given by Gumball is wrong. He does not give the real information

because he also does not know the meaning itself. Here is the diagram:

Figure 4.1 Diagram Venn Dialogue 1

From Figure 4.1 it can be shown that the situation is benign when Gumball with

confident gives the information and a violation happens when Gumball gives false

information to Darwin. Those situations become funny because they happened

simultaneously.

Another example is from flouting maxim of quantity. Here is the example:

Dialogue 2:

[She turns on the TV to a Pokemon-like show.]

Anais : So, will you take me to the movie this weekend?

[The show flashes a "YES" on screen.]

Gumball : No.

Anais : What!? What about the subliminal message?

Gumball : Sorry. I don't understand Japanese.

Anais : Oh, come on!

Gumball : Look. I don't want my little sister to be traumatized, 'kay?

Anais : This is girlist!

Gumball : What? No! It's because you're four!

Gumball : No! It's just-you'll-be-so-freaked-out-by-seeing-the-movie-that-

you'll-be-a-pain-in-the-butt-for-a-month-ist!

In this scene, Anais wants to watch the movie entitled “The Screamening”, but his

brother does not allow her to watch the movie. Gumball does not want his sister

becomes traumatized because of the movie. Gumball is flouting maxim of quantity

because he gives too much information with new word. Here is the diagram:

48

According to McGraw and Warren (as cited in McGraw and Warner, 2014)

“humor only occurs when something seems wrong, unsettling, or threatening (i.e., a

violation), but simultaneously seems okay, acceptable, or safe (i.e., benign)”. In this

scene Gumball says something that seems okay but also wrong. Gumball tries to

convince his daughter not to watch the movie by using bad word. Bad word here

means the use of word that is not applied on the dictionary.

B. The Frequency of Non-observance maxims

The data were taken from cartoon The Amazing World of Gumball in season

3. The researcher used 20 Episodes on purpose. Each episode has at least around 11

minutes. The total length from 20 episodes is 3 hours 23 minutes and 20 seconds.

From 20 episodes, the researcher found the non-observance maxims on 15 episodes

only. There were 25 dialogues which broke the maxims that found in the dialogues.

The four categories in non-observance maxims are flouting maxims, violating

maxims, opting out maxims and infringing maxims (Grice, 1995; Dornerus, 2005;

Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995).

Based on the findings, there were only two of the non-observance maxims

which appeared in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. They were violating

maxims and flouting maxims. Opting out and infringing maxims did not appear in

The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. The sentence or word which is bold is the

example of violating maxims. The following is the table of violating maxims:

3. Manner 2 8% Gumball: Come on, man. What are you --

vegan? Just bring it. [Darwin hits

Gumball's head a little bit faster with the

pan.] That was exactly hard enough to hurt

as much as possible without knocking me

out. You couldn't have done it worse. Just

try again. Remember, it's all in the hips.

Twist and strike. Twist -- [Darwin hits

Gumball's head very hard with the pan.

And Gumball's head's shape

changes.] OW! Why am I not unconscious

yet?!

Anais : You need your brain to touch your

skull in order to pass out.

Gumball: Are you saying I've got a small

brain?

Anais : Yes, but I'm also saying you

From the table above, the researcher found 12 dialogues from the maxim of

relation, the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity and the maxim of manner. The

researcher found 3 dialogues were flouting maxim of relevance, 5 dialogues were

flouting maxim of quality, 2 dialogues were flouting maxim of quantity and 2

dialogues were flouting maxim of manner.

From Table 4.1, violating maxims were mostly used in this cartoon, there

were 13 dialogues (52%). According to Grice (1995), flouting maxims are used to

create humor, but in this finding flouting maxims got the lowest score from two non-

observance maxims as there are only 12 dialogues (48%) and the result was below

50% from the result. Only those two non-observance maxims which appeared. Opting

out and infringing maxims did not appear in creating humor.

It can be concluded that not all non-observance maxims could create humor

effect in the cartoon, but some non-observance maxims could also create humor

effect in the cartoon. Violating maxims and flouting maxims were the non-

observance maxims that create humor effect in The Amazing World of Gumball

cartoon. Opting out and Infringing maxims did not appear to support humor in the

cartoon.

In this chapter, the researcher has discussed the answer of the two research

questions. Violating and flouting maxims appeared most frequently in this cartoon.

Those two non-observance maxims created humor effect in this cartoon. The next

chapter discusses the conclusion and suggestion from the result of this research.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

The last chapter presents the conclusions and the suggestions. In conclusion

part, the researcher sums up the findings that the researcher got and also the answer

of the two research problems. For the suggestion part, the researcher gives suggestion

to the readers or other researchers based on the answer of the problems that the

researcher made.

A. Conclusions

In this part, the researcher summed up the result of the research. The

researcher also answers the two research questions. For the first research question, it

can be concluded that there were only two types of non-observance maxims that

appeared in this cartoon, they were violating maxims and flouting maxims.

Unfortunately, opting out and infringing maxims did not appear in this cartoon to

support humor. The use of benign violation theory also helped the researcher to

analyze the conversation in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon.

The second research question was about the frequency of non-observance

maxims in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. There were four non-observance

maxims which can break the conversation, they are violating maxims, flouting

maxims, opting out maxims and infringing maxims (Grice, 1995; Dornerus, 2005;

Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 1995). In this research, the researcher only found two non-

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

55

observance maxims in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. They were violating

maxims and flouting maxim in total 25 dialogues. There were 13 dialogues

representing violating maxims and 12 dialogues for flouting maxims. Grice (1995)

says that the use of flouting maxims could create humor effect, but the researcher

found that in The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon, violating maxims appeared

more frequently than the flouting maxims. In this cartoon, violating maxims appeared

13 times (52%) and flouting maxims appeared 12 times (48%). From the result that

the researcher obtained, violating maxims and flouting maxims really influenced in

creating humor effect in this cartoon. The researcher could conclude that not all non-

observance maxims could create humor effect in the cartoon. In this cartoon, the

flouting and the violating maxims could create humor effect without opting out and

infringing maxims. Benign violation theory helped the researcher to find how humor

was created.

B. Suggestions

From the findings that the researcher obtained, the researcher gave

suggestions to all readers. The researcher gave the suggestions based on the finding

that the researcher obtained for students, lecturers and future researchers.

1. For Students

The researcher has mentioned before that this study can be implemented in the

drama class and play performance class. The researcher believes drama class and play

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Page 70: AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE … · i AN ANALYSIS OF NON-OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL CARTOON A SARJANA PENDIDIKAN THESIS Presented as Partial

56

performance class can implement theory of non-observance maxims. Flouting

maxims and violating maxims are useful to help students in creating humor verbally

and written. Written here means, students can make a script by using these two non-

observance maxims. Students can also try to make a humor verbally using violating

and flouting maxims. The researcher believes flouting maxims and violating maxims

can create a better humor rather than opting out and infringing maxims.

2. For Lecturers

For the lecturers, they can use theory of non-observance maxims in teaching

the students how to create humor in the drama class and play performance class. They

can teach the students how flouting maxims and violating maxims have an important

role to create humor effect rather than opting out and infringing maxims. They can

also guide the students in creating humor in the script and creating humor verbally.

The findings of the research can be examples for lecturers to teach the students.

3. For Future Researchers

For the future researchers, this research can be used for them to do another

research. In the finding of the research, the flouting maxims and the violating maxims

are two non-observance maxims that can create humor effect in the cartoon. For

future researcher, they can have a research about opting out and infringing maxims in

analyzing humor also. They can use another subject to do a research, for example like

drama, action, adventure, or fantasy. They can also use another theory that can

support non-observance maxims theory.

Gumball: Sarah, listen-

Sarah: I know what you're gonna say. I'm sorry about the hair.

The Puppy

[The trio open the box and are grossed out at what they see]

Anais: Ugh. What is that? It looks like an angry, green hat.

Darwin: Myeeh, or like an evil wiener poking out of a ravioli.

Non-observance maxims: Flouting maxims of quality

Benign: Describe the turtle using another word

Violation: Shocked

[The children's bedroom. The kids are gathered around the turtle, who is still in the box. Anais is reading

a book titled "My Pet Turtle"]

Darwin: Look, I agree that he's kind of mega-gross, cold, wet, smells like a belly button, and has the

beady eyes of a ventriloquist dummy, but he's part of the family now, so we're gonna love him like a

Watterson.

Gumball: OK, where do we start?

Anais: Well, the best way to make a bond with a new pet is physical contact.

Gumball: [reaches over to the turtle] Ehhhh, come here, little guy. [The turtle extends his neck]

Eeeehhhhhh, maybe not.

Darwin: Dude, don't let your fear prevent you from having a beautiful relationship.

Gumball: I'm not scared, I just don't think he likes me.

Richard: It`s gone.

Gumball: What do you mean "it`s gone"?

Richard: It was right there! It was a small store, it was bright red and had a door that slid open like

this[mimics van door] and the man inside sold puppies and watches and stereos and fur coats and

golf clubs and fireworks and he was such a nice man...

Gumball: Dad, that was a van.

62 Darwin: Before we say goodbye to our beloved family pet, evil turtle. I think we should all say a few

word to let know just how much he meant to us. I always think fondly of the way he put fear into my

heart.

Darwin: What does that mean?

Gumball: Procrastinators: derived from the Mexican word, "Procratalamation" which means mid-

night snack, and the viking word "Astinator" which means puckered cheese. It describes a person

who sits on a sandwich in the dark.

Darwin: [confusingly stares at gumball]

Gumball: Of course I don't know, dude. You know how I use a dictionary.

Darwin gasps and blushes.]

Darwin: [Surprised] How could she know about that?!

Gumball: Well, you've got a bit of a reputation, my friend.

Darwin: What?

Gumball: You know. You're the kind of guy who likes to take his boat out, all his sails on fire, a

burger in each hand, a cape on his back, ready for Valhalla.

Darwin: What's that supposed to mean?

Gumball: I don't know. I went too far with the metaphor and lost the plot myself.

Darwin dialing a number beside him. Then the Wolf picks up his phone.]

Wolf: Hello?

Darwin: Hi. I'd like to complain abbot your cartoon. I disapprove of the use of dynamite. It is imitable,

and could endanger the life of a child.

APPENDIX 2. The Sript The Amazing World of Gumball season 3 episode 1

entitled “The Fan”

Running to the Rainbow Factory

[The episode opens with an exterior of a gate to the Wattersons' house. Gumball comes crashing

through it]

Gumball: Hurry up, we're running out of time!

[Darwin runs, catching up with Gumball]

Darwin: That gate was unlocked!

Gumball: I don't care, we only have two minutes to get there! [Jumps on a series of cars and

garbage cans]

Darwin: You do know there's a sidewalk, right?

Gumball: No time to explain! We need to keep moving! [Spills a trash can, ruins a mailbox,

ruins a garden plastic flamingo, and jumps through a decorative shrub design, thus ruining it]

Darwin: Was that really necessary?

Gumball: No time to worry about collateral damage!

Darwin: I'm pretty sure that was just damage damage.

[Sarah appears on the sidewalk]

Sarah: Hey guys! I just want to-

Darwin: Sorry, we don't have time right now!

[Sarah appears again]

Sarah: Hey, guys!

Darwin: Sorry, no time.

[Sarah appears once again]

Sarah: Hey guys. [Appears again] Hey guys!

Gumball: What the?

Sarah: [Appears] Hey guys!

Darwin: Alright, go for it. [Gumball rams into Sarah, thus knocking her head off her cone]

Sarah: [Appears again in front of a fence, unharmed] Oh, hi guys!

[Gumball and Darwin use her head as leverage to jump over the fence]

Darwin: Sorry!

[Sarah appears in a yard with Cube Dog running towards Gumball and Darwin]

Sarah: Hi guys!

Gumball: [grab s Cube Dog]

Darwin: Just go home, okay?

Sarah: I just wanna- [Gets attacked by Cube Dog, but appears on the sidewalk again,

unharmed] Hey guys! [Gets knocked over, then appears again in front of a store] Hey

guys! [Gets her face smashed into window, and appears again, next to a car] Hey guys! [Gets

jammed into car and appears again, knocked over by Gumball and Darwin] Hey guys! [Appears

Gumball and Darwin: [Frustrated] WHAT!?

Sarah: I just wanted to say…it's ICE to see you! [An unseen crowd is heard laughing]

Darwin: Look, Sarah, we don't have time for this.

Gumball: Yeah, we have to -- why are we running again?

[The Rainbow Factory explodes in the distance]

A Sitcom Ending

[Gumball and Darwin are sitting on the school hallway floor, crying]

Gumball: The whole Rainbow Factory, destroyed! And we could have saved it!

Darwin: Yeah, but we could have not caused it too.

Gumball: The water supply contaminated for centuries! They say our kids will look even

weirder than we do!

Sarah: Hey guys!

[Gumball and Darwin sigh]

Sarah: Well, I guess the moral of this story is, "All's well that ends well!" [laughs]

[The frame freezes as the words "The End" appear on screen, and a jingle plays]

Gumball: SARAH! This did not end well, for anyone! It'll take 3 weeks to rebuild it!

Sarah: Yeah. Well, then I guess you could say, "The grass is always greener on the other side of

the fence!" [laughs again]

[Frame freezes again, and the words "Executive Producer" and "Sarah G. Lato" appears on

screen and the jingle continues]

Gumball: Sarah, all the grass is on fire and so is the goshdarn fence!

[An unseen audience is heard laughing]

Gumball: OK, what is that? Who's laughing!?

[Sarah reveals an audio recorder, and stops the audience laughter noise. Then Gumball pulls it

from Sarah, and throws it away. Sarah fetches it, then she plays cartoon music in it]

Sarah's Role

[Cut to the cafeteria, and Sarah stops cartoon music playing on her recorder. She is seen noisily

eating an ice cream cone. Gumball & Darwin look at her, confused]

Sarah: Ah! Don't you hate it when people eat noisily? Cuz I do. I'm so like you in that way.

Hey! We should totally go on an adventure where we like tell people off for their bad habits but

learn that everyone should be themselves, and then we hug! [to Tina Rex] Hey! Me and my

BFFs, Gumball and Darwin think maybe you should stop mouth breathing. It's not very

dignifying and it's making the cafeteria moist. But we forgive you, because it's important for you

to be you.

Tina: [Growls]

Darwin: How about we just have lunch?

Sarah: [Squeals] Yeah, sure. No problem. Can I sit here? [Whispery voice] At your table?

Gumball: Yeah. Whatever.

[Sarah melts with excitement]

Sarah: So, now we sit together at lunch. I guess we need to work on our dynamic.

Darwin: Wuh?

Sarah: Yeah, since I moved schools to be near you guys, I haven't figured out where I fit in. Cuz

am I like, the kooky one?

[Gumball and Darwin shrug]

Sarah: Kooky Kooky Kooky Kooky Kooky Kooky Koo-ky-Koo... No? Okay so maybe I'm like

the nerdy & secure one, but then I take my glasses off, and I'm like super cute.

[Sarah take her glasses off, and spins her head as if she had hair]

Sarah: No? Or maybe I'm just the girl next door who's always been there for you, but you're too

foolish to realize it's perfect for you.

Darwin: But you don't live next door.

Sarah: I can move. But of course I couldn't do that because then you both would have to fight

over me.[Laughs then squeals]

Gumball: Well, at the moment you're more like... the insanely obsessive one.

Sarah: The insanely obsessive one! I can totally do that.

Gumball: No, no, no! I didn't mean I wanted-

Sarah: And I'll be really creepy, and you'll be really scared. But in your final moments, you'll

realize that we're meant to be.

Gumball: Final moments? What does that mean? I'm not sure I'm comfortable with you

following us.

Sarah: Don't worry. [whispery voice] You'll never see me. [Whispers] Best Friends. [Records

"Best Friends," and loops it on her recorder. She leaves it on the table, and leaves. But the

batteries die. Sarah quickly replaces them, and leaves the recorder saying "Best Friends"

repeatedly]

Sarah's Video

[The video begins with Sarah removing the lens from the camera, and it focuses on Gumball in

his house. Gumball takes his shirt off, sees Sarah, and shuts the blinds. The video continues,

showing various scenes of Sarah stalking Gumball and Darwin throughout their lives]

Sarah:

For a very long time

I've watched you from afar

Hunched in your closet

Or strapped beneath your car

I treasured all the stories

The three of us share

Wherever you are

I'll always be there

When you were alone

I was there too

Behind the shower curtain

And you never knew

I dressed in your clothes

And breathed in your air

I watched you both sleep

And nuzzled your hair

It helps that your bedroom has places to hide

And the windows don't lock

So I can get inside

I've waited so long

To be part of your life

And one day one of you

Will call me his wife!

[The video ends, and the scene cuts to a stunned Gumball and Darwin in the classroom. They

have watched it on the school TV, and they freak out for several seconds]

Gumball: I think we need to have a reasonable conversation with this young lady.

In the Hallway

[Gumball and Darwin walk along the hallway]

Darwin: Where is she? We've been looking for two hours now.

[They come across a seemingly stunned Mr. Small, paying great attention to a mural by the

hallway.]

Mister Small: Oh man…not cool…

Gumball: You okay, Mr. Small? Why are you looking at that painting like that?

Mister Small: [Sighs in relief] Oooh.. Thank mother earth! You can see it too.

Gumball: [Mouthing to Darwin] Wow.

[Mr. Small leans closer to the painting. A part of the painting that looks like an ice cream (which

is obviously Sarah) opens its eyes, and startles Mr. Small. Sarah quickly closes her eyes, and

continues camouflaging within the painting]

Mister Small: [Whispering] Did you see that?

Darwin: See what?

[Mr. Small pokes Sarah. Sarah reveals her face, and screams. Mr. Small screams, followed by

Gumball and Darwin screaming. Then Mr. Small chuckles silently in relief. Sarah runs away]

Gumball: Sarah! Wait!

[The brothers take off after her trail. Sarah is trapped in the dead end of a hallway, and the

brothers corner her. Sarah hears them, gasps, and pretends to be distressed as they arrive]

Gumball: Sarah, listen-

Sarah: I know what you're gonna say. I'm sorry about the hair.

Gumball: Eh-what? What hair? [He turns around, revealing a spot of shaved hear behind his

head] Is there something wrong with my hair?

Sarah: Nooooo. [Smiles]

Gumball: Sarah, this whole…thing…isn't really working out.

Darwin: Yeah. It's not you. It's us.

Gumball: By which we mean it's you.

Sarah: Wait! Don't you want to see what's inside my locker?

Gumball: Is this another one of your tricks? Why would we wanna see inside your locker?

Sarah: Because this is the part of the story where you realize maybe I do all this…because

I'm [Sadly opens locker] lonely.

Gumball: No, Sarah. This is the part of the story where you realize there is no story, and you'll

leave us alone.

Sarah: Oh. [Holding in tears] Y-yeah. Sure. [Walks away]

Darwin: Dude, look at this.

[They look at various pieces of paper in Sarah's locker. There are papers with Gumball and

Darwin drawn on them.]

Darwin: "The first people who spoke to me at Elmore Junior High." And this, "The coolest kids

in school: Gumball and Darwin."

[Gumball sees Darwin drawn as a tall person, while he (Gumball) is dwarfed in comparison,

drawn beside the tall Darwin. At this, he begins examining his size, while Darwin continues

reading]

Darwin: "The only people who really know me." Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Gumball: I know right? I'm definitely taller than you! And if my eyes were that close together,

I'd be a cyclops!

Darwin: No! She really cares about us, but we just pushed her away. Look at this [Grabs book,

and shows it to Gumball]

Gumball: "The Amazing Adventures of Gumball, Darwin, and Sarah." Oh man. All she ever

wanted was to be included.

Darwin:[Nods sadly, then opens book] This…this is today. Here's us at lunchtime.

Gumball: Oh yeah.[Points at his hand in the drawing] Look at that hand, it's like a big thumb.

Darwin: Well, hands are difficult to draw.[Flips page] Here's us watching the

video. [Flips] And here's Sarah walking off just a second ago. I wonder what happens

next. [Flips page again]

Gumball: Hm. Well, whatever it is I hope she goes to art school.

Darwin: No. You say "We're her only friends, we have to do whatever it takes to make her

happy."

Gumball: We're her only friends!? We have to do whatever it takes to make her happy!

[They both gasp]

Gumball: Right! How do we do it?

Darwin: Alright, here.

At The Rooftop

[Sarah leans on the edge of the school building, clearly saddened. Gumball bursts through a

door]

Gumball: Sarah! You shall not be alone!

Sarah: It's alright guys. You don’t have to do this.

Gumball: Yes I do, Sarah! I have been touched by the beauty of your art, and now [Blushes, and

face becomes anime] I think I love you.

Darwin: No! You cannot love her [Glances at Sarah's book for lines] for I love her more! She's

beautiful, and yellow, and runny! [Checks lines] And funny!

Sarah: Forget it guys.

[Gumball and Darwin smile encouragingly]

Gumball: Aw, come on!

Darwin: Come on.

Gumball: Come on!

Darwin: Come-

Gumball: On!

Sarah: [Going with the act] Please don't fight over me!

Gumball: There's no other way. You are too beautiful to be shared!

Sarah: [Excited squeal] Oh, wait. [Takes out recorder, and plays music]

[Gumball and Darwin take stances against each other, but instead jump cheerily along each

Sarah: Uh guys? What are you doing?

Darwin: [Falls down, and pretends be hit]

Sarah: [Pleased, then stops smiling] What are you doing?

[Gumball and Darwin are hugging warmly]

Gumball: Oh, what now? It says they snuggle for a while!

Sarah: No, it says they struggle for a while.

Gumball: Well, it's not my fault your curly writing is so curly.

Darwin: [Looks through book] Dude, this is the part where you rip your shirt.

Gumball: Whaaat?

Darwin: [Shows Gumball] It's right here.

Gumball: [Sighs] Really?

Sarah: Oh yeah. It's right there.

Darwin: [In the act] Let her go, or prove that you understand true love!

Gumball: My beating heart is the only proof I need. Look!

[Attempts to rip shirt off, but fails. He struggles with it for a while, and in the end just takes it

off]

Gumball: Look!

Darwin: [Checks book, and sees muscular Gumball with abs] Meh. That'll have to do. Now do

your line.

Gumball: [To Sarah] You don't know how long I've waited for you!

Sarah: I don't know which path to choose!

Gumball: So for you, I can feel it.

[Silence for a while. Sarah (with her eyes closed) peeks at Darwin. Darwin realizes that he

missed his cue]

Darwin: What? Oh! [Glances at book] [In the act] NOOOOO!

[He tackles Gumball, and they "struggle" again]

Gumball: What happens next?

[Darwin flips the page of the nearby book, and they both see the next scene]

Gumball: We have to jump?

Darwin: Yeah. We're doing this for Sarah in the name of friendship.

Gumball: And pity.

Darwin: Yeah, that too.

[They run towards the building's edge]

Gumball and Darwin: Ahhhhhhh-I don't think sooo-ahhh!

Gumball: You have to choose between us!

Sarah: I can't. I love you both!

Gumball: Then one of us must go!

Sarah: Hold on, I got a track for this. [Plays another music track]

[Gumball pulls Darwin, and now threatens to push him against the fan (though the fan has a

protective screen). As Gumball talks, Darwin is pushed nearer to the fan]

Gumball: Goodbye, my brother. I'm sorry it had to end this way.

Darwin: It's not the end, because my love will live on forever!

Gumball: Goodbye! [Out of act] Okay, you're supposed to intervene here.

Sarah: I can't! The tape is stuck, the music won’t stop.

Darwin: What!? What do we do then?

Sarah: Yeah-you-keep going! I'll be a sec.

Gumball: Are you kidding me? Do something!

Sarah: Okay. Just uh… [Fumbles with recorder] Almost got it!

[Darwin comes closer to the fan. Gumball goes to Sarah, and throes the tape away. The music is

Sarah: Stop! I can't bear to see you destroy each other.

Gumball: Okay, so what happens next?

[Darwin looks through the book]

Darwin: Hmmm…we agree that you get her at Monday through Thursday, and I get her Friday

and in the weekends, and we "live happily ever after."

Gumball: I think I have a better Idea.

APPENDIX 3. The Sript The Amazing World of Gumball season 3 episode 10

entitled “The Procrastinator”

You are Procrastinators

[The episode starts off with Gumball, Darwin and Nicole in the kitchen.]

Darwin: Wait, what?

Nicole: You are procrastinators.

Darwin: What does that mean?

Gumball: Procrastinators: derived from the Mexican word, "Procratalamation" which means

mid-night snack, and the viking word "Astinator" which means puckered cheese. It describes a

person who sits on a sandwich in the dark.

Darwin: [confusingly stares at gumball]

Gumball: Of course I don't know, dude. You know how I use a dictionary.

[Flashback]

Gumball: [Closes a large dictionary while Richard is sleeping on the couch in order to scare

him]

Richard: Aaaaah! [He screams his heart out, literally. Gumball slowly sneaks away]

[Flashback ends]

Anais: A procrastinator is someone who always avoids their responsibilities by doing something

else instead.

Gumball: Ha! Ha! That's ridiculous.

Nicole: Gumball, you're such a procrastinator that you were 4 years old before you finished your

first sentence, and even then it was "I'll do it tomorrow". Look, I'm going to the grocery store. I'll

be back at 5, and the trash better be gone!

Gumball: Fine, we'll show you that we're not prosthetic actors.

Anais: You mean that you're not movie stars with bionic body parts?

Gumball: Crime investigators!

Anais: It's procrastinators.

Gumball: You're such a smug-face-inator.

Nicole: Hey! Stop wasting time and take out the trash, unless you want to face [robotic voice] the

Ter-mom-inator.

[Nicole walks out of the kitchen like a robot]

Nicole: I'll be back. At around 5.

[Nicole walks out of the house like a robot]

Gumball: Don't worry mom, we'll get right on it!

Elmore Plus

[Gumball and Darwin are at the computer, eating chips]

Darwin: Shouldn't we be taking out the trash?

Gumball: Hold on, hold on. I have to moan about it on Elmore Plus first.

Darwin: Dude, you spelt "trash" right.

Gumball: Oh, yeah.

[Gumball changes the "s" in trash to "$"]

Darwin: Add some little face things.

[Gumball adds a ton of little emoticons to his comment]

Gumball: Hm, should I add yolo?

Darwin: What! No dude, have some self-respect. Just put #swag.

Gumball: Alright. [Gumball types #swag] Alright, lets get on with it.

Darwin: Hold on, lets just check if anything else interesting is happening on Elmore Plus.

Gumball: Ok, but quickly.

[As Gumball clicks the mouse, an hour and a half passes]

Gumball: What the what! Dude, we were only on Elmore Plus for a second and almost half an

hour passed.

Darwin: Let me try.

[Every time Darwin clicks the mouse, almost a half an hour passes]

Darwin: Dude, Elmore Plus really put some "pro" in the "procrastinating".

Gumball: It's far too dangerous. By the time we're finished, we'll have more wrinkles than a toe

after a bath. We need to leave. Now!

[As Gumball and Darwin try to leave the room, the computer tries to suck them back. Gumball

and Darwin leave the room, but the computer is too strong and sucks them back to the computer

seat]

Gumball: Eh. [Continues using Elmore Plus and eating chips.]

11:30 AM

[Gumball and Darwin are in the backyard, tanning themselves]

Gumball: [In a dehydrated voice] How do I look?

Darwin: [In a dehydrated voice] Like a movie star's dad.

Darwin: How about me?

Gumball: [In a dehydrated voice] Awesome, like a handsome leather shoe.

Darwin: [In a dehydrated voice] Cool.

[Gumball and Darwin fan themselves. They are so tanned that the fan makes blows them away

like dust.]

11:45 AM

[Gumball and Darwin are eating candy on the front stairs of their house]

Gumball: Hey watch this.

[Gumball throws a piece of candy in the air which lands in his mouth]

moonwalk.]

Darwin: Do do do do do do. He he!

Gumball: What are you doing?

Darwin: I'm practicing my moonwalk!

Gumball: That's not how you moonwalk, dude. Watch, and learn.

[Gumball walks like an astronaut on the moon]

Darwin: Dude, you're breaking the laws of the game, and the laws of physics!

Gumball: What? I can’t hear you! In space, no one can hear you whine.

Darwin: Well in space, no one can breath without a helmet.

[Gumball acts like a astronaut without his helmet, fake dies and floats.]

12:15 PM

[Gumball and Darwin are eating lunch at the table]

Gumball and Darwin: Food Fight!

[The camera turns black and white and one of their food bowls are shown as a battleground. In

one side there are peas, and in the other sweet corn kernels.]

Darwin: [Walkie-talkie static] Pea squadron, we have visual on our carrot target.

Gumball: [Walkie-talkie static] General Support talking, you have permission to move in!

Darwin: [Walkie-talkie static] Wait! There's a patrol unit of sweet corn!

[The corn and peas in the food bowl move against each other, and start "killing" (or rather,

popping) each other.]

Darwin: They are popping! I repeat, they are popping! We're still in mor-

Gumball: [Walkie-talkie static] This is sector 4. You have 10 seconds before sausage airstrike.

That's 10 seconds-

Darwin: [Walkie-talkie static] No, wait sir! There are peas still in their pod!

Gumball: -5 seconds…

Darwin: Abort! Abort!

[A sausage is dropped, it lowly falls down on the "battleground"]

Gumball: 4…

Darwin: I said abort!

Gumball: 3… [The surviving peas "run" around the food bowl] 2…1…

[The sausage hits the carrot, and explodes. The screen flashes white, and cuts to Darwin and

Gumball looking sadly at a food bowl full of mashed up food with vegetables]

Gumball: [Sorrowfully] That was not as fun as I thought it would be.

Darwin: What are you doing?

Gumball: I'm Treasure hunting.

Darwin: Dude, there's nothing interesting down there.

Gumball: Oh really?

[Gumball plays the 2001 Space Odyssey theme music]

Darwin: Eugh! That milk chocolate bar is so old, it must have turned into cheese chocolate. Just

throw it away.

Gumball: Are you kidding me? Cheese and chocolate are two of my favorite things!

[Gumball eats the chocolate bar multiple times, but his body keeps rejecting it]

Darwin: Dude, stop. You clearly don't like it.

Gumball: My body just has to learn to like it.

[Gumball tries to eat the chocolate bar again. His body does not reject it for a while]

Gumball: See? Such is the power of the mind over the [Gumball vomits up the chocolate bar on

Darwin's face]

1:00 PM

[Darwin is stacking up plates, bowls and other platters on the kitchen table. Gumball watches

him, worried]

Gumball: Dude, I'm not sure this is a good idea.

Darwin: I bet you a dollar that nothing breaks.

Gumball: You're on!

[Darwin reaches for a cloth under the stack of plates, bowls and mugs and pulls it from under

the stack. Nothing breaks]

Darwin: Haha! Tough luck.

[Gumball takes a dollar and gives it to Darwin. Then the whole house collapses. Gumball takes

back his dollar, and another bill from Darwin]

Gumball: Thank you, and thank you! [Laughs, then shatters to pieces]

1:30 PM

[Gumball and Darwin are having a staring contest]

Darwin: This staring match is boring. How can we spice it up?

Gumball: Like this? [Gumball hits Darwin with his eyes] Or like this!? [Gumball hits Darwin

1:45 PM

[Gumball and Darwin are in the backyard throwing, a frisbee at each other]

Gumball: Hey dude, can you do this? [Gumball makes his tail go in and out of his mouth]

Darwin: No. But can you do this? [Darwin stretches his arms, and his legs grow shorter]

Gumball: Not bad. But can you do this? [Gumball "stands" with his tail]

Gumball: How about this? [Fits torso in mouth]

Darwin: [Muffled] How about this? [Fits all limbs in mouth]

[Eventually, both Gumball and Darwin swallow themselves and disappear into thin air]

2:00 PM

Gumball: Are you ready for the fire sauce challenge?

[Gumball and Darwin eat a spoonful of hot sauce]

Darwin: Eh, not so bad.

Gumball: Meh.

[Both begin to sweat and redden. Suddenly, Gumball's tail catches on fire like a rocket fuse]

Gumball: [Panics, then blows up like a firecracker]

Darwin: Hehe! Some people just can't handle their hot sauce-[Screams and melts]

2:45 PM

[Gumball is on the couch reading Captain Punch when suddenly a red dot appears. This makes

Gumball act like a cat and chase the red dot, and in the process destroy lots of items in the living

room and scratches himself. Meanwhile, Darwin is outside investigating a laser pointer. It is

pointed towards a window of the house.]

Darwin: Nah. This laser pit is garbage.

[Darwin throws the laser away, causing Gumball to break the window and chase after it]

3:15 Pm

Gumball: Ok, I guess it's time.

[Gumball finally takes the trash bag in the kitchen. But instead, he uses it to break the clock]

Gumball: [Sigh] That clock was driving me nuts. [Throws garbage bag back in the kitchen]

Who will be the best looking girl?

[Gumball and Darwin are in the bathroom]

Gumball: Okay, who will be the best looking girl? 1, 2, 3!

[Gumball and Darwin turn around and face the camera. They have lots of makeup on their

Darwin: Oh, do you notice something missing?

Gumball: More makeup! I think mom's got some in her bed [Elmore Plus on the computer

Darwin: Like how?

Gumball: Like this!

Drawing Pictures

[Cut to the living room where Gumball and Darwin are drawing each other draw each other,

with a fruit bowl on the table.]

Gumball: Okay, finished! Go on, show yours.

Darwin: No, you first.

Gumball: Okay. Both at the same time.

Gumball and Darwin: 3, 2, 1!

[They both reveal their drawings. Gumball's drawing is a detailed sketch of Darwin. Darwin's

drawing resembles a child's drawing. There is a creepy looking clown on the side of his drawing,

and Gumball notices this]

Gumball: Dude! We were supposed to be doing portraits. Why would you add [Gumball puts

down his drawing, revealing-] a scary clown through the window inside [Glances at the window]

of a beautiful-[Sees that the scary clown is real and closes his eyes, frightened]

Clown: I've got a telegram for Gumball and Darwin Watterson. [Inhales] "Take out the the trash,

it could be done in a flash. If you can do the math, you can avoid your mom's wrath. Signed,

Nicole Watterson." [Smiles, then disappears from the window.]

[Gumball and Darwin look at each other, terrified]

Deleting Gumball's Elmore Plus account (4:45 PM)

[Gumball and Darwin finally take the trash out in the yard, and head for the trash bin]

Gumball: Well, I guess we had to do it at some point.

[Suddenly, Gumball and Darwin receive a notification on Elmore Plus, which causes them to get

sucked back into their room through the window. Gumball, close to dumping the trash brings it

along with him]

Gumball: That's it! I'm deleting my Elmore Plus account. [Clicks] Ok, are you sure? [Clicks]

Yes. Are you really sure? [Clicks] Yes. Are you absolutely sure? Yes [Clicks] I'm absolutely

sure! For security reasons, please enter the word in the box below. Okay, uh-

[Gumball and Darwin can't read the words in the box due to it being distorted and twisted.

Gumball puts the keyboard upside down which causes the word he puts in to be correct]

Gumball: Aha! Just click confirm…

[Gumball tries to click "confirm". But every time he does, the confirm button dodges the cursor

multiple time.]

Gumball: AH! THIS IS HOW YOU DELETE AN ELMORE PLUS ACCOUNT- [Tries to

throw the computer monitor, but the wires pull it down] Hold on. [Unscrews a plug] Need to get

those little screws at the back. THIS IS HOW YOU DELETE AN ELMORE PLUS ACCOUNT

[Throws computer monitor out the window] Yah!

[Gumball's face sucks the computer monitor back, and it hits him in the face. Then the screen

goes black and fades into the next scene]

I'm out of procrastination Ideas. Or am I?

Gumball: Oh man. I'm out of "procrastellation" ideas.

Darwin: Looks like we'll have to take out the trash after all

[Gumball and Darwin start to moan. They also start banging on objects]

[Gumball and Darwin make music with the objects around them. Suddenly the microwave clock

turns to 5:00]

Oh my gosh it's 5:00 PM!

Gumball: Oh my gosh its 5:00 PM!

[Gumball and Darwin rush outside to take out the trash. But when they open the door, they meet

Nicole. She is still acting as the "ter-mom-inator". Through a shade of her sunglasses, she

analyzes them and identifies them.]

Nicole: [Robotic voice] Did you take out the trash?

Gumball and Darwin: Mhm [Both smile sweetly]

Nicole: [Robotic voice] Good! Now take the groceries, and put them away!

Gumball and Darwin: [Nod] Yeah, sure.

[Nicole walks into the house and, through the living room like a robot. Gumball and Darwin

hide the trash bag. Suddenly, Nicole notices something and turns towards them. She just pats

Gumball, and then continues walking away. Both sigh in relief. The garbage truck outside

leaves]

Darwin: We're cooked!

Gumball: Not yet!

Taking Out The Trash

[Gumball and Darwin rush outside to take the trash out but the garbage truck leaves. Gumball

and Darwin chase the garbage truck down the street. Gumball runs into a bus stop pole causing

the bag to fly out of his hands and into the garbage truck. In celebration, Gumball and Darwin

jump up in the air and freeze for a few moments (some of the screen disappearing). But then

since both bags look almost exactly the same, Gumball throws out the grocery bag out by

mistake, forcing the family to eat the trash.]

Richard: Uh, can I have some more of the sports section?

Nicole: Can someone please explain to me how this happened?

Gumball: [Smiles sheepishly] ...wrong bag.

APPENDIX 4. The Sript The Amazing World of Gumball season 3 episode 32

entitled “The Safety”

Watch Out, Little Teddy!

[The episode starts with a video's title card, with cheery music playing.]

Video Narrator: Watch Out, Little Teddy.

[Then a teddy bear is seen cooking.]

Video Narrator: Little Teddy is very excited, because it's cooking time. But, watch out, Little

Teddy…

[Little Teddy burns his hands while attempting to bring out some cookies from an oven.]

Little Teddy: Ow! Uh!

Video Narrator: BE CAREFUL AROUND OVENS!

[The video switches to Little Teddy looking out from a window, and to a tree with a bird.]

Video Narrator: Little Teddy has seen a bird. [Little Teddy waves as narrator speaks.] Hello

little bird!

Bird: Hello!

Video Narrator: But, watch out, Little Teddy...

[Little Teddy falls out of the window, and hits the ground. The bird flies to him, and pecks his

head.]

Video Narrator: BE CAREFUL AROUND WINDOWS!

[Little Teddy is seen chasing a butterfly in a field.]

Video Narrator: Little Teddy is having fun in the backyard, with a butterfly. Butterflies are

pretty. But, watch out, Little Teddy….

[After running a long distance, Little Teddy knocks himself over with a rake.]

Video Narrator: BE CAREFUL AROUND GARDEN TOOLS!

[The video transitions to Little Teddy walking to an old woman about to cross a road.]

Video Narrator: Little Teddy is helping a senior citizen. That's kind of you, Teddy. It's nice to

be nice.

[Little Teddy and the old woman start crossing the road.]

Video Narrator: But, watch out, Little Teddy…

[The old woman suddenly screams, and beats him with her cane until a bump rises from his

head.]

Video Narrator: BE CAREFUL AROUND STRANGERS!

[As the old woman leaves, Little Teddy is hit by a speeding car.]

Video Narrator: AND CARS!

[The scene flips over, and transitions to Little Teddy dancing inside a circle of singing children.]

Children: [Singing] If you're going on adventures, or having lots of fun. Remember to be

frightened, being safe is number one.

Little Teddy: [Waving] Remember, kids: please take care 'cause danger's lurking- [Little Teddy,

along with the video becomes eerily distorted.] everywhere.

[The camera zooms out from a TV in Miss Simian's classroom. Beside it, Mr. Small is screaming,

frightened by the video. The students watching the video are frozen, with horrified expressions

on their faces.]

Mister Small: Okay. Everyone, take the rest of the day off. I'm just gonna-

[The haunted Mr. Small grabs a trash bin, uses it to cover his head, and rocks gently in a corner.

The other students (except for Darwin) walk away, all of them still having the same facial

expressions. Darwin remains seated, and the camera zooms into his face.]

Safety Measures

[By the pavement, the Old Chalkboard Woman prepares to cross a road. Suddenly, a screaming

Darwin throws a trash bin at her, and pulls Gumball along with him.]

Gumball: Dude! Have you lost your mind? What was that all about?

Darwin: CAREFUL!

[Darwin tackles Gumball before he steps into a puddle.]

Gumball: What the what are you doing!?

Darwin: Keeping you safe. You almost stepped in a puddle, man. You could have slipped. Or

worse: DROWN!

Gumball: Dude, I think you might be overreacting just a teeny tiny bit.

Darwin: I love you too much to let you get hurt! I'll keep you safe! I'LL

KEEP EVERYONE SAFE!

[The Old Chalkboard Woman places a hand on Darwin.]

Old Chalkboard Woman: Are you kids alright?

[Darwin flips her over, and sends her flying into a nearby window. He screams after.]

Darwin: Come on! [Darwin drags Gumball away.]

Gumball: [To old woman] Sorry!

Old Chalkboard Woman: Oh, it's quite alright!

[The next morning, Gumball wakes up and goes to the bathroom. He screams shrilly, and

frantically runs downstairs.]

Gumball: Hey Darwin! [Gumball talks in panicky gibberish, points to his groin, and cries.]

Darwin: What?

[Gumball pulls down his pants, and reveals his censored part.]

Darwin: But it always looks like that.

[Gumball removes the censor, and reveals something further underneath covering him.]

Darwin: Oh, that! That's because I put the child filter on the house.

Gumball: What the [blank]!? Wait, what's happening? It's like there's some kind of [blank]

device, censoring every gosh[blank] word I say!

Darwin: Cursing is unsafe, Gumball. Words can hurt.

Gumball: Dude, I don't even know any real curse words. I only know the mom-sanctioned

versions.

Darwin: But those words sound like the bad ones, so they need to be censored as well!

Gumball: So, what are we supposed to say when we need to vent?

Darwin: Like when?

Gumball: Like now. [Gumball stamps on Darwin's foot.]

Darwin: OH, YOU–

[The scene is replaced with peaceful music, and cheery pictures. The scene later shows the

Wattersons eating literal molecules. Gumball scoops a handful, and gingerly munches on them

while Darwin contently watches. Then Gumball spits out some in disgust.]

Gumball: Oh, mom. Darwin's being a complete mom! No offense to you. [To Darwin] Offense

to you!

Nicole: I'm sorry, but your brother is right. Vegetables are full of pesticides, meat is full of

hormones, fish is full of mercury, milk is not meant to be digested, sugar makes you fat–

Darwin: And bread is full of gluten! The only solution is to eat pure proteins, carbohydrates, fat,

minerals, and vitamins. It is for our own good!

Nicole, Richard, and Anais: [Dazed] It is for our own good.

Richard: Can you pass the iron?

[Richard is given a block of iron which he shreds and chews.]

Richard: Ah.

Gumball: Am I the only one here who thinks this is COMPLETELY CRAZY!?

Darwin: Is it crazy to keep your loved ones safe?

Richard: I don't mind, as long as I'm full.

[Richard walks to the fridge, and opens it.]

Darwin: Careful, Mr. Dad. It's dangerous to take too many vitamins.

[Richard sadly closes the fridge, and as he groans, magnets stick to his stomach.]

[In the living room, Gumball turns on the TV, and watches cartoons. An Ostrich runs through a

desert, while the Wolf prepares to catch the Ostrich with dynamite and explosives. Gumball

laughs, unaware of Darwin dialing a number beside him. Then the Wolf picks up his phone.]

Wolf: Hello?

Darwin: Hi. I'd like to complain abbot your cartoon. I disapprove of the use of dynamite. It is

imitable, and could endanger the life of a child.

Wolf: Where would a child be able to buy dynamite?

Darwin: Are you saying your channel and sponsors don't care about our nation's children?

Wolf: [Blinks] …Okay, no dynamite.

[The Wolf brings out an anvil.]

Darwin: I'm sorry. We can't allow that, either.

Wolf: But a child can't lift an anvil.

Darwin: But he might hurt himself trying.

[The Wolf dejectedly throws the anvil away. Then, the Ostrich runs by, but is stopped by

Darwin.]

Darwin: Ah ah ah! No running in the road.

[The Wolf prepares to eat the Ostrich, frozen midair.]

Darwin: And, of course, no violence.

Wolf: Oh, no no no no no no no! I wa–I wasn't really gonna bite his tail. The joke is that he's

gonna give me my own tail–

Darwin: No jokes, please. A child might laugh, and choke.

Wolf: Can we keep the music?

Darwin: No, thank you. It's the gateway to rock n' roll, which is the root of all evil.

Gumball: [Shocked] Uh–

Darwin: Repeat after me: it's for our own good.

Wolf and Ostrich: [Dazed] It's for our own good. It's for our own good–

Gumball: No no, gosh! Wait! What!? I would never imitate what I see on TV! Guys, come

back!

[The Ostrich and Wolf leave, and Gumball cries. Then he gets angry, bites his own tail, hops up,

hits the ceiling, and falls down with birds flying around his head.]

Darwin: You know, you can't talk to characters inside a TV, right? And birds can carry diseases!

[Gumball collapses, and blacks out just as his show ends. He wakes up, groaning, and is shocked

to find himself chained on a chair at the table. After barely struggling, he sees Richard, Anais,

and Nicole, seemingly dazed and creepily happy.]

Gumball: Guys! What's going on!?

Nicole: Darwin tied us up while he went to make sure the rest of Elmore is safe.

Nicole, Richard, and Anais: [Dazed] It is for your own good!

Gumball: How can this be for our own good!? Don't you realize–

[Gumball is shocked by a machine attached to his butt.]

Gumball: What is that?

Anais: That's the best way for you to exercise safely.

[A food distributor on the table shoots snacks into each of the family member's mouths. Gumball

does not open his mouth, and is splatted with food.]

Richard: Mmm. That was my idea!

[Gumball shakes off the food, and finds a bucket under his chair.]

Nicole, Richard, and Anais: [Dazed] It is for your own good!

Gumball: Have you lost your minds? How could you give up your freedom?

[Nicole drops her pretense, and everyone else follows suit.]

Nicole: Okay, Gumball. We don't have much time. Just do as I say–

Gumball: No! I love you, mother, but I stand for freedom!

Anais: No, Gumball! You don't get it!

Gumball: Sorry! I can't hear you over my freedom!

Nicole: [Quietly] Gumball, we're talking about the–

[A surveillance camera swivels to their direction, and all of them (except for Gumball) put on

their guises again.]

Gumball: Oh, that's right! Laugh it off! Let's all give away our freedom, and laugh about it!

AHAHAH–[Gumball notices the camera behind him, and speaks quietly.] Everybody, careful. I

think we're being watched.

[Richard, Nicole, and Anais sigh.]

Gumball: That's what you wanted to say, wasn't it?

[Nicole, Anais, and Richard (still retaining their guises) gesture towards the kitchen counter

with their eyes and heads. Gumball notices the key to their locks.]

Gumball: [Evil face] Of course!

[Gumball hops with his chair to the counter. He glances at his family, and they nod. Then he

springs, and instead takes the nearby potted cactus with his mouth.]

Gumball: Got it!

[Richard, Nicole, and Anais shake their heads. Gumball painstakingly chews up the cactus,

while his family watch in puzzlement (although still pretending to be happy). After a while,

Gumball forms a replica of the key out of the cactus he chewed up with his mouth. He spits it

towards one of his paws, and unlocks himself as the camera swivels away. Anais, Richard, and

Nicole have now dropped their guises, and their puzzlement is plainly shown.]

Nicole: Oh, nothing. Let's get out of here, and stop your brother!

Overthrowing the Safety Regime

[Richard, Nicole, Gumball, and Anais barge through the door of their house, and run to confront

Darwin.]

Nicole: He's at the town hall. We have to get there, and stop him!

Gumball: Before what?

Anais: He plans to invade the rest of the world to make it safe!

[They screech to a halt.]

Gumball: How do you know about all this?

Nicole: He told us.

Gumball: Why didn't you stop him?

Richard: Because, it's Darwin. He's really cute.

Nicole: Aw, he was all like– [Nicole imitates Darwin.] "All resistance is futile!"

Anais: [Anais imitates Darwin.] "Those who stray from the path will be corrected!"

Richard: [Richard imitates Darwin.] "Today, we save for Elmore! Tomorrow, we save the

world!"

Gumball: But, how could you not see he was dangerous? Actually, now that I think of it, it must

have been adorable.

All: Aw.

Gumball: Now, alright! Let's take this cutie patootie down!

[Before Gumball can punch a fist into his paw, the sound of rubber is heard. Gumball, Anais,

Nicole, and Richard are seen surrounded by citizens in protective gear, armed with batons. They

raise their batons, but are interrupted by Principal Brown.]

Principal Brown: [Quietly] I don't mean to alarm you or damage your eardrums by shouting,

but under the new regime you are under arrest for treason. Please don't force us to use our

balloon batons.

Gumball: Wait. [Gumball pokes a baton.] That's not real?

Principal Brown: No. Definitely unsafe.

Gumball: So, what's to stop us from running away?

Principal Brown: Running is now an unsafe act.

Gumball: Oh, good.

[The Wattersons run away.]

Principal Brown: [Gently] Stop!

[The citizens sidle after the Wattersons, taking extreme caution in moving. ]

Principal Brown: Control, we have no other choice but to engage in a vehicle chase.

[They inch to a parked vehicle, and begin to push it.]

Principal Brown: Oh. I wish we were still allowed to drive.

Harold: I'm sorry sir, but under the new regime, complaining about the regime is a punishable

offense.

[Harold and the corn citizen repeatedly hit Principal Brown's head with their batons. The

Wattersons arrive at the town hall.]

Gumball: Okay. So, here's how we get in.

[Gumball traces an invisible diagram in the air, explaining his plan as he speaks.]

Gumball: Okay, now, you're there. We come in from there. We go around there, and we're there.

Is that clear? Let's go!

[Richard imitates Gumball drawing the diagram.]

Richard: It's not working!

Gumball: Dad, that was just a diagram.

Anais: Well, we couldn't see it.

Gumball: Yeah. Fair point. Okay, the plan is this: dad creates a diversion at the entrance,

allowing us to zip-line inside; mom neutralizes the first three guards; Anais hacks into the alarm

system and opens the door, so I can get to Darwin– [Evil face] and destroy

him! [Normal] Verbally.

[The plan begins. From the top of a building, Nicole, Gumball, and Anais watch a wary

Neckbeard at the entrance. Then he suddenly sees Richard, dressed like a woman. As he

confusedly expresses himself quietly, Richard knocks him out with a fire hydrant. Richard gives

two thumbs-ups.]

Gumball: Why'd you need to wear a dress to do that?

Richard: So I can do this.

[Richard repeatedly spins around, playfully. Then Nicole grabs a bar from an antenna.]

Nicole: Come on, guys! Hold on to me.

[They crash into a warning scene, and slide down.]

TV Narrator: Warning: These stunts are performed by cartoon characters. Do not under any

circumstances attempt to imitate or recreate the majority of things that happen in

cartoons. Obviously.

[Nicole, Gumball, and Anais enter the town hall. A red guard notices them.]

Nicole: Leave this to me!

[Nicole cracks her paws, her neck, her head, and her ears. Then she charges at the guard. But

before she can land a punch on him, a title card with "BIFF!!" on it blocks the action.]

Nicole: Did anyone see what happened? I'm pretty sure I didn't hit this guy.

Purple Guard: Hey!

[The purple guard charges. Before Nicole can kick him, another title card with "KAPOW!!"

replace the action.]

Nicole: What's going on? I didn't even touch him!

Gumball: I think Darwin still has the child locker on.

[An orange guard charges, and "TWIDDLE" appears before he gets knocked out.]

Nicole: "Twiddle?" What? And he's now censoring the sound effects as well?

[More orange guards and a green security guard appear.]

Nicole: You guys go on ahead. This is gonna be pretty boring to watch.

[After Gumball and Anais run off, Nicole and the guards clash, but their fight is censored by yet

another card with "EDITED!". Anais and Gumball enter a corridor lined with surveillance

monitors on each side.]

Gumball: What is all this?

Anais: It must be where he monitors the whole town.

[Gumball steps on something. It turns out to be bubble wrap.]

Anais: We're getting close.

Gumball: Wait!

[Gumball pops all of the bubbles on the sheet of bubble wrap.]

Gumball: Okay!

[Gumball and Anais walk towards the entrance to Darwin's lair.]

Gumball: Ugh! We need a code. How are we gonna get that?

Anais: Don't worry. I have my ways. [Types] H [Types] A [Types] C [Types] K: Hack. Press

enter.

[The door opens.]

Gumball: Really? "Hack"?

Anais: Just kidding. Actually, I bypassed the storage controller, tapped directly into the V and X

array head, decrypted the neoline SAS disk–

Gumball: [Nods] Mhm. [Nods] Mhm. [Nods] Mhm.

Anais: Injected the flash drivers into the network's fiber pack, before disabling the IDS, brought

in incoming traffic to a bunch of (???) proxies–

Gumball: [Steps back and nods.] Mhm. Mhm.

Anais: Accessed the ESXI server plus during the primal digi-centre, and disabled the inter-V

stand routing in the layer three–

[Gumball leaves Anais, and sees Darwin in his "lair," smiling almost innocently. He grabs a

drape.]

Gumball: REVOLUTION!

Darwin: NOOO! Use the stairs, it's safer.

[Gumball sighs, jumps off a ledge, swings multiple times, and tries to reach for Darwin, but fails.

The drape stops swinging.]

Gumball: Oh, whatever.

[Gumball drops to the floor, and limps threateningly towards Darwin after dusting himself.]

Darwin: Gumball, that wasn't very safe. Did you hurt yourself?

Gumball: Yes. But that doesn't mean you're right!

Darwin: But, I'm doing this for your own good! I'm the hero here.

Gumball: Okay, man. Let me ask you one question: would a hero sit on a throne? Would a hero

carry a writing crop? Would a hero hang out in a lair, surrounded with plans to take over the

world!?

Darwin: That's three questions.

Gumball: That's–eh–that's not the point! Look at yourself!

[Gumball grabs a camera, and points it to Darwin. Darwin sees himself.]

Darwin: D–Do you think–? Am I the villain?

Gumball: Mhm. Mhm.

Darwin: Did I go too far?

[Gumball gestures to Darwin's security monitors, his rulebook, a map of some of the world's

continents, his hat, and cape.]

Gumball: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! No! The cape is awesome!

Darwin: What am I gonna do?

Gumball: Just accept that sometimes life is unsafe.

Darwin: You're right. I'm gonna get rid of all these rules.

Gumball: Before you do, can I add one?

All Hail the Lords of Elmore!

[The scene skips to Elmore Junior High, just as the bell rings. Gumball and Darwin (dressed

with capes) pass by a school corridor. The students along the corridor suddenly line up.]

Tobias: All hail the mighty Gumball and Darwin, lords of Elmore!

[After they salute, they slap themselves, and Gumball and Darwin laugh. The episode ends.]
