unusual sight is found at the bridge crossing of the Reguliersgracht with the Herengracht, on the side with odd numbers. Standing

on this bridge with your back to the Thorbeckeplein, you will see six arched bridges in a row. To the left you will find six more over

the Herengracht and on the right you will see the next two. The 15th is the bridge you are standing on. It is particularly worth coming

here at night as the bridges are illuminated giving one of the most beautiful and romantic views in Amsterdam

    Details

Amsterdam, capital of theNetherlands, has been called the "Venice of the North" for its morethan one hundred kilometres ofcanals, about 90islandsand 1,500bridges.

    [1][2][3][4]The three

maincanals,Herengracht,Prinsengracht, andKeizersgracht, dug in the 17th century duringtheDutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as theGrachtengordel.

Inward to outward, the canals are as follows:

    Singel [edit]

    Singel

    Main article:Singel (Amsterdam)

Singel encircled the medieval city of Amsterdam. It served as amoataround the city from

1480 until 1585, when Amsterdam expanded beyond Singel. The canal runs from theIJBay,

nearCentral Station, to theMuntpleinsquare, where it meets theAmstelriver. It is now theinner-most canal in Amsterdam's semicircular ring of canals. The canal should not be

confused with Singelgracht canal, which became the outer limit of the city during theDutch

    Golden Agein the 17th Century.
