Chronic total occlusions (CTOs) of coronary ar-teries represent one of the greatest challenges to interventional cardiologists. Successful revascular-ization of CTOs has been strongly associated with improved left ventricular function, freedom from angina and future revascularization, and in several studies increased survival. Through new techniques (antegrade and retro-grade), new guidewires, novel devices, appropri-ate patient selection, and improved operator tech-nique, the success rates for recanalization of com-plex chronic total occlusions are increasing. With presentations from experts in the field, nu-

merous thematically organized live CTO cases, and

case review sessions, this symposium will sum-

marize the techniques, tips, and tricks that are es-

sential for the interventional cardiologist to decide

when intervention of CTOs is warranted and to op-

timize procedural success.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this symposium, participants should be able to: Identify the pathobiologic (calcified vs non-calcified), angiographical (length of

lesion, proximal cap, landing zone, interventional collaterals) and clinical consid-erations which are associated with successful recanalization of chronic total oc-clusions.

Explain how advances in strategical approach, operator technique, guidewire technology, and new devices have improved success rates for chronic total occlu-sions.

Describe advanced guidewire techniques and other adjunctive devices for chron-ic total occlusions.

Integrate the latest recommendations for how to use new guidewires and devices to optimize procedural success while minimizing complications.

EDUCATIONAL METHODS

Personal Messages from Dr. Knaapen and Dr. Nap

“We are performing PCI CTO for almost 6 years now. The CTO program has brought us to the next level of

performing PCI. The complexity is both challenging and rewarding. Our regular PCI program has benefited

greatly from the techniques and tricks used in PCI CTO . Doing PCI CTO makes you a better interventionalist. We

hope to see you during our meeting, so we can all learn from each other.”
