More and more air operators around the world are appreciating the importance of being able to operate their assets at nigh

A lot of pilots are using image intensifying when piloting performance aircraft and helicopters. The key to minimising the eve

present risks, and ensuring successful night operations, is a structured program of i ntegrated night vision training for aircre

Training in the human performance limitations of night operations in general, and night vision goggles in particular,

perhaps the greatest single investment in safety that an air operator can make.

AMST has developed a comprehensive computer-based training system which is unique in the world for teaching

all aspects of night vision. This includes the optimum set-up for each individual pilot's night visi on goggles (NVGs)

as well as practical exercises and demonstrations.

    Integrated Night Vision Training System

    THE NEED

    THE MISSION

    - Effective scanning strategies for maximising night vision

    - Effect s of diffe rent light levels on NVG performance

    - Techniques for tacti cal night fligh t & improved targe t acquis iton

    - Learni ng the problems of landing and flying close to built -up areas

    - Night flight in marginal weather conditions

    - Learning the effects of moon fractionalization and illumination levels

    on terrain recognition

    - Recogn ition of visual illusions at night (with and withou t NVGs)

    - Learning the limitations of NVGs, such as the almost instantaneous

"shutting-off" of NVG with incompatible light

    YOUR BENEFITS

The integr ated night vision trainin g system is designed to be

applicable to aircrew of a range of aircraft types, from rotary-wing to fixed-wing, transport to

fast jet. It can even be applied to civilian rescue helicopter operations.

Night flight by definition involves operating in an environment in which there is a lack of

good quality outside visual cues for the aircrew to use as references during flight.

AN INHERENTLY GREATER RISK OF VISUAL ILLUSIONS AND SPATIAL DISORIENTATION

    OCCURS DURING NIGHT OPERATIONS.

    - saves flight-time and excludes inherent risks in early stages of training

    - protects aircraft and aircrew

    - prevents accidents

    - comprehensive, training syllabus

    - cost-effective and reliable

    - simple in operat ion

    - makes use of the NVG-compatible lighting characteristics of AMST's

    visual OTW, and instrument displays

    - full technical assistance, staff training, support and maintenance

    TRAINING MODULES

Basic physiological and physical principles of night vision and elec

optical NVD's, advantages, limitations and differences of image i ntensifand demonstrates set-up, function and use of NVG under operatio

conditions. Also contains in-flight night VIDEO sequences.

Aircrew practise the set-up procedures; pre-flight inspections; prac

individual NVG fitting; focusing; ocular adjustment and calibration us

    their personal goggles.

Aircrew experience the limited visual capabilities and visual i l lusi

occurring under unaided and aided night vision condit ions.

Aircrew fly a short-duration tactical mission at low-level whilst wearing t

night vision goggles. At the very least, this activity allows the studen

operate an aircraft under NVG condit ions with the benefi t of rec

    instruction in NVG limitations.

Aircrew refresh the theoretical knowledge at squadron level w

subsequent visits to the Terrain Board, Night Flight with practical exercis

    and theory revision.

Training results and bio-feedback data will be recorded for each individ

trainee and are available for de-briefi ng as well as documentation purpo

occurring under unaided and aided night vision conditions.

    TERRAIN MODEL BOARD

    TERRAIN MODEL BOARD FEATURES

The terrain model board is used to develop visual scenarios a

to practise what was learned in the previous training sessions,

well as to gain additional NV skills, including visual identificati

terrain avoidance, wire hazards avoidance, interpretation

terrain, landmark shadowing and lighting effects.

The terrain represented can be either of a generic nature, or c

be accurately modelled on a specif ic location, or series

    locations.

All visual demonstrations are computer-controlled, using an easy to operate graphic user interface (GUI) to choos

lighting combinations for various demonstrations and scenarios.

    - Mountain peaks

    - Water, and harbour feature with lighted ships

    - Sand dunes

    - Cultural lighting (town)

    - Airfield (with lights)

    - Rolling hill feature

    - Hidden valley feature

    - Variable moon position (in terms of intensity, angle and elevation)

    - Moveable flying aircraft

    - Simulated weather conditions i.g. rain, fog
