With our introduction of the worlds firstsynthetic motor oil to meet AmericanPetroleum Institute service require-
ments in 1972, we created the syntheticmotor oil market. We coined the phraseextended drain interval and set thestage, I was convinced, for a whole newgeneration of quality and a completedeparture from the wasteful andunnecessary practice of the 3,000-mileoil change.
I had total confidence in our technology. We had tested our product extensively, and running millions of miles in real-world applications further supported our25,000-mile oil change recommenda-
tion. We, alone, led the charge.Today, of course, others are followingour lead with introductions of extendeddrain oils of their own. The market, however, has lagged behind. Althoughconsumers are moving to synthetics, most remain resistant to the longer drainintervals. Less than 10 percent of motor-ists who are using synthetic motor oil areusing extended drain oils. That leavesover 90 percent who are changing theirsynthetic oils at intervals recommendedby their installers or vehicle manufac-turers. That is a huge segment of the
synthetic motor oil market we are notreaching with our extended drain oils.It is, without doubt, an opportunity wehave been missing. Until now.
Our new AMSOIL OE Synthetic MotorOil opens doors we have never openedbefore. Unlike our other motor oils,AMSOIL OE carries a recommendationto be changed at intervals stated byvehicle manufacturers. Whether its3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, 7,000 milesor longer, OE Motor Oil addresses thereservations many continue to feel aboutextended drain intervals. And equallyimportant, it eliminates the concern overcost. OE is priced competitively withvirtually all other synthetic motor oils.
While its true that our extended drainoils provide the greatest overall value, our OE Synthetic Oil is an AMSOIL
alternative that obliterates all barriers. Itsquarely positions Dealers for huge im-pact on the quick lube/installer market.
For Preferred Customers, OE meansoptions. Not all Preferred Customers aredrawn to AMSOIL because of our au-tomotive motor oils. Many, for example, use only our motorcycle or snowmobileoils. As a Preferred Customer, you maynot be on board with our extended drainoils or the higher upfront cost. But youhave experienced AMSOIL quality, andAMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oil delivers
the quality you demand at a drain inter-val and cost you are comfortable with.
In any case, the reaction we have had tothe OE Oil has been 100 percent posi-tive. And its not just OE. There is enthu-siasm surrounding all of the productswe have introduced in recent months. This includes our new European CarFormula Oil you will see in this AMSOILMagazineissue.
Direct Jobber George Douglas attendeda recent regional sales meeting andshared his enthusiasm with us:
Just got back from the Orlando meet-ing, and I am fired up from what welearned of the new oils that have beendeveloped for our future success. Thisis not an easy task to get me fired upafter nearly 30 years of involvementwith the AMSOIL company, but I am,and for more reasons than just the newproducts that will give us more reachinto the synthetic motor oil mar-ket. I am fired up about thedirection and leadership thiscompany is demonstrating
on a daily basis. I amfiredup about the advertising
campaign they havein the works in severalmarkets, as this demon-strates confidence in usDealers to capture thereturn on their advertisinginvestment dollars. I amfired up about the trainingvenues that the regionalsales managers are work-ing on for us. I am fired up
about the new communication methodsthey have put in place with the Dealeronly magazine and one especially for
Preferred Customers. I am also fired upand thankful that we have positionedourselves to take advantage of all thesenew initiatives that AMSOIL is doingfor us.
I thank George for his message andappreciate his high level of enthusi-asm. I have to believe that many othersreading this column share that sameenthusiasm, and I am confident that ournew OE Synthetic Motor Oil will appealto consumers by the thousands.

SEVERE GEARSEVERE GEAR LINE RECEIVESLINE RECEIVESUPGRADED TECHNOLOGYUPGRADED TECHNOLOGY
In 2007, AMSOIL subjected SevereGear 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube anda number of competing gear lubes to acomprehensive series of industry-stan-dard tests. While some lubes performedwell in some areas and poorly in others,Severe Gear placed near the top in allperformance categories. It revealeditself to be the most well-balanced
formula for its time, capable of providingexceptional performance and protectionin a range of applications.
Since then, AMSOIL gear lube technol-ogy has advanced, making an already-superior product stronger. As the resultsshow, the new additive technologyallows Severe Gear to outperformthe previous formulation and all of itscompetitors as tested in 2007. AMSOILhas raised the bar for gear lube perfor-mance even higher.
Increased Extreme-Pressure
Protection
High-horsepower/high-torque applica-tions demand lubricants with increasedextreme-pressure (EP) properties. TheFalex Extreme-Pressure Test (ASTM
D-3233) is used to determine a lubesability to provide EP protection. As Chart1 shows, although the previous formula-tion ranked in the top tier, the new tech-nology provides an 80 percent increasein EP protection and easily outperformsall competing formulations from A Studyof Automotive Gear Oils.
Increased Wear ProtectionSevere applications such as towing, hauling and racing subject gear lubesto severe conditions, causing fluid filmrupture in lesser lubricants. Metal-to-metal contact can result, inviting rapidwear and, ultimately, gear failure.
The 4-Ball Load Wear Index Test (ASTMD-2783) determines a gear lubesanti-wear properties under heavy load.Higher values, reported as the LoadWear Index (LWI), indicate increasedwear resistance.
As demonstrated in Chart 2, the newformulation provides a 14 percenthigher value than the previous formula-tion and ranks higher than all scoresachieved in 2007 testing.
The technology behind the entire line ofSevere Gear Synthetic EP Gear Lubesalso provides increased foam control, thermal and oxidative stability, limited-slip differential chatter suppression andtorque retention.
NOVEMBER 2010 | 5M A G A Z I N E
AMSOIL is continually researching methods to enhance its already-superior product line. Newadditive technology has recently been incorporated into the Severe Gear Synthetic EP Gear
Lube line, providing even greater protection and performance. While users may notice the fluidcolor has changed slightly, the previous and new formulations are compatible and may be mixed.Pricing remains unchanged, providing even greater value.

History of Synthetics
In 1972, AMSOIL pioneered the synthet-ic lubricant industry by introducing theworlds first synthetic motor oil to passAPI service requirements. Becausesynthetic lubricants were new and revo-lutionary, the market for them startedsmall. Through the AMSOIL Dealernetwork, the public was slowly educatedon the benefits of AMSOIL syntheticlubricants, attracting loyal high-perfor-mance and extended-drain customersalong the way. As an increasing numberof companies have introduced syntheticlubricants through the years, the market
has continued to grow. Today, syntheticscomprise 7-9 percent of the total lubri-cant market, a sharp increase from the5 percent share they held in 2005.
Modern Drain IntervalsThe oil drain interval recommendationsfor many of todays vehicles extend wellbeyond the traditional 3,000-mile inter-val. Most owners manuals now recom-mend drain intervals of at least 5,000miles. Ford will recommend 10,000-miledrain intervals with its 2011 vehicles, while vehicles equipped with electronicoil monitoring systems often extenddrain intervals up to and even beyondthe 10,000-mile mark.
Introducing OE Synthetic
Motor OilsIn order to meet the demand for a lower-cost synthetic motor oil, and to providecustomers a stepping stone to the top-tier line of AMSOIL synthetic motor oils,AMSOIL is introducing the AMSOIL OESynthetic Motor Oil line. Priced competi-tively with other standard-drain syntheticmotor oils, OE Synthetic Motor Oils offerthe protection and performance benefitsof a high-quality synthetic for OEM-recommended drain intervals.
AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oils aredesigned as an entry-level productfor customers who want to move up tosynthetic quality, but wont pay a signifi-cantly higher price than a conventionalproduct and/or arent initially interestedin extending their drain intervals.
Competitive PricingPriced at $4.20 a quart wholesale, or$3.99 a quart when purchased by thecase, AMSOIL OE is more competitivelypriced with other synthetics on themarket, appealing to customers whorecognize the AMSOIL name, know itsreputation for quality and have wanted
to use the products, but have balkedat the higher prices or extended drainintervals of the top-tier or XL SyntheticMotor Oil line.
Top-Tier Oils Provide Best
Overall ValueAlthough the initial price of OE SyntheticMotor Oils is lower than the price of theAMSOIL top-tier and XL Synthetic MotorOil lines, the top-tier oils provide thebest overall value to consumers.
For example, a vehicle specifying5,000-mile oil changes requires fiveoil changes over 25,000 miles. ThePreferred Customer price for a do-it-yourself oil change using five quartsof 5W-30 OE Synthetic Motor Oil (OEF)is $21 per oil change and $105 for thefive oil changes required over 25,000miles. The Preferred Customer priceof upgrading to the top-tier AMSOIL5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (ASL)with a 25,000-mile drain interval is$35.25. Thats almost $70 in savingson oil alone over 25,000 miles.
Great Opportunity to Step Upto AMSOIL QualityOE is a great choice for many AMSOILPreferred Customers who alreadybuy AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils, Formula4-Stroke Oils, 2-Cycle Oils or filters, but arent interested in extending thedrain intervals in their cars and trucks.AMSOIL OE presents a great steppingstone to start experiencing the benefitsof AMSOIL motor oil in all vehicles.

NEW EUROPEAN CAR FORMULA PROVIDESNEW EUROPEAN CAR FORMULA PROVIDESSUPERIOR PROTECTION FOR HIGH-SUPERIOR PROTECTION FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE EUROPEAN VEHICLESPERFORMANCE EUROPEAN VEHICLESNew AMSOIL European Car Formula5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (AEL)provides exceptional performanceand protection for high-performanceEuropean vehicles manufactured byVolkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz,BMW, Porsche and more. Owners ofvehicles requiring an oil meeting theVW 504.00/507.00 specification areactively seeking appropriate products, and AMSOIL European Car Formula5W-30 is one of only a few oils avail-able in North America that meets theVW 504.00/507.00 specification. The
low-viscosity formulation maximizesfuel efficiency without compromisingengine protection, while meeting strictEuropean performance requirementsfor gasoline and direct-injection dieselengines designed for low-viscosityoils. Formulated with low sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur (SAPS), AMSOILEuropean Car Formula 5W-30 complieswith modern emissions systems to pro-vide optimum life and performance.
Stay-in-Grade PerformanceSophisticated European engines subject
oil to severe operational conditions. Oilsmust demonstrate excellent high-tem-perature/high-shear (HT/HS) perfor-mance to maintain viscosity and provideadequate engine protection. AMSOILEuropean Car Formula 5W-30 SyntheticMotor Oil is engineered to stay in gradedespite rigorous operation throughoutthe extended drain intervals Europeanautomakers recommend. Formulatedwith a select additive package andshear-stable synthetic base oils, it meetsstrict ACEA and VW HT/HS require-ments to provide outstanding wear
protection and is recommended for thelongest drain interval recommended bythe manufacturer.
Low SAPS FormulationExcessive sulfated ash, phosphorusand sulfur (SAPS) in motor oil can harmmodern exhaust treatment devices.Diesel particulate filters (DPFs), forexample, require low-SAPS motor oil tohelp prevent filter plugging. AMSOILEuropean Car Formulas low-SAPS for-mulation promotes optimum emissionssystem performance and life, reducingmaintenance costs.
Maximum Fuel EconomyAMSOIL European Car Formula isengineered with a 5W-30 viscosityand friction modifiers to reduce frictionfor increased energy through-put. T E C H T A L K
The European motor oil market hasalways been different from the NorthAmerican market. European engine oildrain intervals have consistently beenlonger than those in the U.S., and oilformulations and additive packageshave also differed from those of NorthAmerican engine oils. These differencesare due primarily to European emissionslegislation, fuel economy concerns andstringent severe-service oil durabilityrequirements.
In the United States, oil classifica-tions and requirements are developedthrough a process involving a numberof trade associations and organizations, and the classifications are finalized andmanaged by the American PetroleumInstitute (API) and the International
Lubricant Standardization and ApprovalCommittee (ILSAC). In Europe, industry-wide specifications are developed bythe Association des ConstructeursEuropens d Automobiles (ACEA).
The API-governed engine oil specifi-cation has traditionally been the mostcommon in the U.S., and oils meetingcurrent API specs are still widely usedtoday. More recently, ILSAC, which hasa more global focus, is having a greaterinfluence on North American specifica-tions due to the rising number of
Japanese vehicles sold in the U.S. Asa result, the new ILSAC specification,GF-5, differs more from its API counter-part, SN, than in the past.
ACEA does not have the recognitionand influence in Europe that API doesin North America because individual ve-hicle manufacturers in Europe stronglysupport their own engine oil specifica-tions. As a result, there are a number ofdifferent widely used European engineoil specifications, and oil manufacturers
are tasked with building appropriateengine lubes for each.
As these new European vehicles maketheir way to the U.S., consumers arediscovering they cant necessarily use
just any oil. One recognized exampleof a very particular specification isVolkswagen VW 504.00/507.00 (504.00covers gasoline engines, 507.00 coversdiesel engines). This specialized engineoil specification was designed by VWto help protect emissions-reductionequipment and support proper opera-tion and longevity of the vehicle. Untilrecently, AMSOIL did not offer a productmeeting this specification, and thereare only a handful of oils available in theU.S. that do. New AMSOIL EuropeanCar Formula 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil
(product code AEL, see p. 9) does meetthe spec, as well as the ACEA A3/B4specification, which was created withslightly different priorities than the VW504.00/507.00 spec.
ACEA oils engineered for the A3/B4category meet the requirements ofdirect-injected gasoline and dieselengines in addition to the requirementsof A3/B3. In order to provide optimalperformance in direct-injection diesel
engines, an oil must be highly stableand durable; direct-injection systemsare notoriously hard on engine oil.ACEA A3/B3 European oil specificationsrequire stable, stay-in-grade engineoils to ensure these high-performanceengines are protected from inadequateoil supply and excessive wear. For anoil to be considered stay-in-grade, itmust resist thickening or thinning outof an established viscosity range. Thetable below outlines the general differ-ences between four ACEA sequencesfor gasoline and light-duty diesel oilsin regard to fuel economy benefits anddrain interval recommendations.
Moving forward, Volkswagen plans tomaintain three global engine oil speci-fications for its light-duty gasoline and
diesel vehicles: VW 504.00/507.00, VW502.00/505.01 and VW 501.01/505.00.New AMSOIL European Car Formula5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil is recom-mended for Volkswagen vehicles requir-ing VW 504.00/507.00, while AMSOILEuropean Car Formula 5W-40 SyntheticMotor Oil is designed for Volkswagensrequiring VW 502.00/505.00/505.01.Both formulations are recommended forthe ACEA A3/B4 specification, amongothers.

When you walk into the AMSOILcorporate building in Superior, Wis.,one of the first things you see is anautographed print of supercross starKevin Windham.
A recent trade magazine surveyfound that Windham is considered the
most popular rider in the pits today. As he enters his 17th season of profes-sional racing, he shows no signs ofslowing down, even finishing secondin the Monster Energy AMA Super-cross Championship 450 class in 2010.
Windham recently signed a two-yearcontract extension with the FactoryConnection team. The move keepsK-Dub on the #14 Geico Powersports/AMSOIL/Honda for the remainder ofhis stellar career.

Tony Bischoff and his BES Racing Engines teamwere this years winners of the AMSOIL EngineMasters Challenge.
NOVEMBER 2010 | 13M A G A Z I N E
The AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge,
presented by Popular Hot Roddingmagazine, assembles the countrys pre-mier engine performance builders in aweek-long dyno competition to producethe most horsepower and torque. Thewinner is bestowed with the title of En-gine Master. The event takes place thefirst week of October at the Universityof Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) in Lima, and involves students and staff from itsperformance school. AMSOIL was rep-resented by Technical Product ManagerLen Groom and Director of AdvertisingEd Newman.
In the same way race fans love racing, builders love strapping their engines todynos to see what they can do. Teamsput their engines through the paceson the first four days of eliminations, beginning with the lowest qualifier andconcluding with last years top fin-isher, four-time champion Jon Kaase.Throughout the week, dyno scores wereprojected on a screen in the diningarea, where many competitors remainedriveted throughout the day, recordingthe scores of other teams. On Friday, the six finalists were blind to every-one elses scores until the end of thecompetition.
Fords, Mopars, Chevys, big blocks and
small blocks, fuel-injected and carbu-reted motors all competed on identicaldynos under identical atmospheric con-ditions. While many competitors weresimply there for the adventure, othershad their eyes firmly on the prize.
The scale of the event is enormousas technical staff were flown in fromvarious parts of the country to workalongside the universitys technicalexperts. Students also assisted in theprocess, helping uncrate, assemble andhook engines to dynos, providing theman incredible opportunity to gain newinsights into how to enhance internalcombustion engine performance.
Dyno operator Sidney Bonnecarrereensured every engine was loaded andpushed through identical paces from2,500 to 6,500 rpm. Each builder teamand EMC staff watched from the controlroom, where the measurement equip-ment released the data. The competi-tion director was the respected WesleyRoberson of West Monroe, La., who hasserved with the NHRA since 1968. His
composure and objectivity play an
integral part in the events success.
This is an excellent event for AMSOIL,said Groom. People who have enginesbuilt for them listen to whatever the
engine builder recommends to put init. Its good to get AMSOIL products inthe hands of the people who are goingto use it. Our oil is holding up well here, and its a real positive thing for us.
The school gives everything they can.Their dynos are top notch; the equip-ments top notch. The students all havethe same thing to say about it - that itsgreat. So I think its a great fit; its high-performance and high-end, just likeAMSOIL.
On the final day of competition, the topsix teams had to put up one more setof numbers in three dyno pulls. Scoreswere not projected this time, and every-one had to give their best shot. Whenall was said and done, top honors wentto Tony Bischoff and his BES RacingEngines team, taking their third title witha 417 c.i. Chrysler engine fitted withdouble spark plugs in each cylinder.
