Prison Break
Prison Break is an event organized by IEEE PES
and IAS Joint Student Chapter in collaboration with
PELS, WIE and COMSOC as a part of
PRABIDHI’17(TECH DAY) on 11th April, 2017.
This event was open to students of all departments
and about 124 teams (team of 4) have attended the
event.
The event had three rounds and a given teams were
asked to participate in each of these rounds in the
chronological manner detailed below. There is no
knockout in the rounds.
ROUND 1: Decipher: Participants were given a
code to decode. Decipher starts with all the
participating teams being given a cipher text placard,
which they have to decode and get the plain text
message as soon as possible. The top teams were
selected for the second round.
ROUND 2: This round tested the team’s endur-
ance and physical as well as mental concentration.
They were made to move a ring on a floating wire in
such a manner that there is no physical contact with
the wire. There were various loops which will set the
precedent for the level of difficulty.
ROUND 3: In this round, the participants had to
avoid getting trapped in the LASER security system
built.
The time taken to finish all 3 rounds decided the
winners. The team with the least final duration was
awarded as the winner.
Project exhibition 'Blaze of Skills'
A project exhibition named 'Blaze of Skills' was
conducted by IEEE PES & IAS Students Branch
Chapter, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru
on 12th April 2017 from 03:30 PM to 05:30 PM in
Electric Circuits & Measurements Lab at Amrita
School of Engineering.
This event was conducted to encourage the technical
skills and provide a platform to showcase the ideas
of pre-final year students in Electrical & Electronics
Engineering branch. There were sixteen teams
which took part in the event. The projects were
innovative exhibiting wide range of ideas. The stu-
dents employed various electronic devices such as
LM741 IC, LM358 IC, AD620 IC, OR07, CMOS
4093 IC, MJE 34, TIP 3055, etc.
Few Interesting Projects were:
Electro oculogram: In this they have used Electro
oculography which is a technique to measure the
standing potential between front and back of human
eye, resulting in a signal called electro oculogram.
Based on the eye movement, potential will be
calculated and the signal is transmitted to control the
far away systems.
Audio tone control circuit: Audio tone was
controlled by changing the 'BASS' and TREBLE' in
the AUDACITY software. A Low Pass Filter is used
to do the same in the hardware.
Variable frequency audio filter: A High Pass and
Low Pass Filter instead of a Band Pass Filter is used
in order to bring the response of the filter close to
the response of an ideal filter. This is achieved by
increasing the order of High Pass and Low Pass Fil-
ters.
The faculty from Electrical and Electronics
Engineering Department shared their thoughts with
the students and advised them to proceed further on
their projects. Participants felt blessed for advises
given by the faculty.

Industrial Visit to ENN ENN Transformers &
Electrical Services, Bengaluru
An Industrial Visit to a Transformer manufacturing
company 'ENN ENN Transformers & Electrical
Services, Bengaluru' was organized for S4 Electrical
and Electronics students on 25th April 2017 by IEEE
PELS Student Chapter at Amrita School of
Engineering, Bengaluru. Ms. Mini Sujith, Vice-Chair
and Asst. Professor, EEE Department coordinated
the visit. Dr. Ramprabhakar J. and Ms. Mini Sujith
accompanied the students for the visit. The
industrial visit to this transformer manufacturing unit
was very informative and they could physically see
the assembly of cores, primary and secondary
windings, the various types of insulation used in the
windings, types of protection used etc for a
430/11kV air cooled and oil cooled transformers.
Secondary winding is kept inside and around
secondary winding; the primary windings are wound
in the form of different disc and are arranged in pan
cake type form. The primary windings of each disc
will be connected in series to get the total number of
turns required. The main advantage of this type of
construction is that in case of damage to any turns,
that particular disc alone can be changed. But if the
windings are arranged as a single unit then the entire
winding needs to be replaced in case if any damage
happens to any of the turns.

Hydoelectric power project plant at Hosangadi,
Udupi district. The project is a first of its kind with
the bulk of power generation happening under-
ground without causing global warming. Under-
ground power generation is more eco-friendly since
it increases the head of water and also reduces sub-
merged area at the reservoir. Students could see the
turbines, protected flanged couplings, valve mecha-
nisms used to control nozzles using servomotors
aided by pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Further the students were taken to the nearby tourist
places viz. St. Mary Island, Murudeshwara and Go-
karna as a part of excursion. Students expressed that
they had a good real time experience in learning the
facts.
