It was among the first eightRegional Engineering Colleges (RECs) established as part ofthe Second Five-Year Plan (1956 - 1961). This was the onlyREC in the country which was named as RIT (RegionalInstitute of Technology). On 27th December 2002, RITJamshedpur was converted to National Institute ofTechnology, Jamshedpur as per the decision of Govt. ofIndia. The Institute has 12 departments includingengineering, science and humanities. The Institute, with200 faculty, 4000 students, 150 administrative andsupporting staffs, is a self-contained campus.
