Balancing Play Time and Screen Time.

Quality screen time in small doses is OK for young children. However, limiting your child’s time in front of a TV, computer or electronic device allows your child to spend more time playing and being creative. Just like their parents, children are spending more time glued to screens. And it’s happening earlier and earlier. For example, research has found that 80 percent of preschoolers watch TV every day. That’s more than any other age group! This cuts into the time available for building their brains through free play. However, reading a book with you, running outside or building with blocks teaches more than any app or children’s show can.

Savvy Screen Use: Limit total screen time to one hour a

day. Include all forms of media: TV, mobile devices and video games.

Allow plenty of time for active play. Getting 60 minutes of physical activity each day helps your child look, feel and learn best.

Be an active viewer. Child development experts recommend that screen time should be interactive. Join your child when he watches his favorite show to ask questions and engage his mind.

Choose smarter shows and apps. CommonSenseMedia.org rates and reviews shows, games, books and apps for all ages. Use it to search for educational games for your child.

Avoid violent shows and games. Children see 200,000 violent acts on TV by the time they are 18 years old. When you watch with your child, you’ll know which shows and games to avoid.

Limit where your child can have screen time. Keep TV and devices out of your child’s bedroom and playroom. Designate these rooms for free play.

Turn off your own screens. Your child copies what he sees. If you’re on your smartphone or computer all the time, he’ll follow your lead. Show him how fun it is to read a book or kick around a ball.
