Meaning of Number Seven

Th e Number Seven is the number of perfec-tion. It is the most sacred of all num bers. It

is so regarded by all the ancient peoples in their theogonies. It symbolizes the mystery of crea-tion, and of ma nifesta tion. It is the figure of fact personified.

All the ancient mystery teachings state thatthe Divine brought forth the universe througha Deity havin g a sevenfold aspect. Th e Ch ris-tian scriptures mention the seven Elohim, or “sons of God,” the seven sacraments, seven

capital sins, seven words spoken on the cross,Rome built on seven hills, the Sabbath, or seventh day of the week and a day of rest; andaccording to the Blessed Virgin story we findmention of seven sorrows, seven joys, and sevenglories.

Among the various nations seven gods havebeen identified with the rulers of the sevenplanets. M an’ s phy sical body is sevenfold in

construction, as are divisions of the body, func-tions of the body, etc. N um be r Seven is alsocalled the Master of the Moon because the

moon changes its appearance every seven days.W e have seven days in the week. Th e seventhletter of the Egyptian alphabet is called Z enta, mea ning “ life” and is the symbol for life eternal.

The Number Seven is perfect because it is com-posed of the Number Three and Number Four,or God and Nature combined in man. Pytha-goras says the Number Seven has a body, com-posed of four principles and a soul composed of three principles. Religion, mysticism, historyand mythology are full of references to theNumber Seven, especially with a sacred aspect. Then there are seven colors in the rainbow and

seven notes in music—in fact, there are thou-sands of examples of the significant use of Number Seven which a person can discover bya little effort.

The Book of the Dead

'npHE Book of the Dead is the title now comL mon ly given to the gre at collection of

funerary texts which the ancient Egyptianscribes copied for the benefit of the dead. Itwas really the great religious book of ancient

Egy pt. Th e dead were to be able to recite the200 chapters in order that they might gain thepower and enjoy the privileges of the life of their heaven.

Thoth, regarded by the Egyptian as the “Re-cording Angel” was the author of the Book of  the Dead. Pictorial presentation played a veryconsiderable part in the Book of the Dead. Thework is full of magical references, as its purposeis to guard the dead against the dangers whichthey have to face in passing, first, the under-world, and then “ T u at ,” the world of the dead.

The Egyptian dead were threatened by manyobstacles and dangers in Amenti, or the under-world, and Tuat before reaching their haven of rest. On this journey through these worlds to-ward heaven, the dead meet many beings whotry to hinder their progress but fail because of the power of the Book of the Dead which thedead carry with them. Th e dead also had toundergo judgment by Osiris, king of the under-

world, and to justify themselves before beingpermitted to enter the realm of bliss. Th is wasthe one and only moment when even the Book  of the Dead was of no help. Th e souls of the

dead were not master of their fate when their hearts were weighed by Thoth before KingOsiris. It was at this time that each soul had torepeat the “ Confession to M aat,” so familiar toevery Rosicrucian. In repeating it, the dead souldeclares that he has not committed any one of a long list of sins. If wh at he has said is true,he is allowed to go on to the happy land of joypresided over by the god Osiris. T hu s, to thisend every Egyptian of means had buried withhim a papyrus of the Book of the Dead.

Origin of Adam and Eve

T h e word Adam was originally used in theBible as a common or general name rather

than a proper name. In other words, it meantman in general, or mankind.

Adam and Eve were the representatives of thefirst pair of hum an beings. Religious groupssometimes emphasize them as a specific coupleinstead of a type or a beginnin g race. Th e wordAdam can also mean earth. Even the Bible saysAdam, or man, was made from earth by thebreath of life being pu t into his nostrils. It also

says that he was made in the image of God—spiritually. There are other theories of theorigin of ma n, or Adam. Th e scientific one is

that man’s life first existed as a living thing of the waters, then was a reptile, a mammal, anape, a subman, and finally evolved into aprimitive man comparable to some of theprimitives of today.

Another theory of evolution is that man is afallen angel clothed with ma tter or flesh. Th eangels were sent to the earth and made to loseconsciousness of their heavenly world because

of disobedience to God . Hence, these beingsmust work out their punishment, or evolve backto the higher world, from the primitive brutethrough the stage of the cultured man on upthe scale to the superbeing or angel.

According to theology, Eden was a beautifulparadiselike park somewhere in the Holy Land.In this beautiful spot of nature, God had placedtwo innocent human beings. He told them not

to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. But, so goes the story, the woman, encouraged

by som e kind of spirit wrhich sch olars call asnake, ate of this fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.

Page 5: AMORC - The Hidden Archive (1973) Eighteenth Edition.pdf

Thus did man become able to know right from

wrong and to understand that he was naked.

There have been various interpretations of the

eating of the fruit. Th e general consensus of opinion among theologists seem to be that thiseating was symbolical of the generative act.Thereafter man was punished for disobeyingGod. No t only was he driven from this beauti-ful park, but he was forced to earn his living, not by eating of the abundance of God, but bythe sweat of his brow caused by physical work. Many students of archaeology have attemptedto identify the four rivers of the Garden of Eden

with some ancient spot in Palestine. Othe rshave said that Eden meant a heavenly place;while still others, occult students especially, have said that Eden was a mode of life on an-other planet and that when man disobeyed Godin some way he was thrown from this planet, where life was ideal, down to the earth wherehe ha d to suffer and work. Incidentally, thiswhole story of the book of Genesis is attributed

by scholars to be a Babylonian story of crea-tion, or rather a Babylonian cosmogony. JacobBoehme, a great Rosicrucian mystic, offeredmore spiritual and esoteric interpretations. He

maintained that God was glad that man ate of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Th is actionmay have brought brain knowledge with its

compan ion known as “ selfishness,” but it alsobrought freedom of the will and power of choice. Free will brou ght the opportun ity toovercome selfishness through pain and death, and to return to the divine state which manformerly held. Th is returning of man is sym-bolized, according to some mystics, by the re-turn of the prodigal son. In other words, manreturns to the Kingdom of Heaven, havinglearned man y lessons. Posse ssing free will, hewill become like the angels, hut will be abovethe angels because he possesses free will andconsciousn ess. In a very sketchy mann er this isan explanation of the exoteric and esoteric sidesof the banishment of Adam and Eve from theGarden of Eden.

Why Is Mankind Divided Into

Various Races?

T t is only within modern times that the divisions among races have been worked out

by arbitrary scientific methods. All existing

men resemble one another. There are many“ ethnical criteria,” or racial factors, on whichethnologists rely in their many complicated

schemes of classifications. Amon g them are twoschemes which are recognized as trustworthy.

Judging the shape of the head or measure-men t of the skull is one method. Th ere arethree groups in this division—longheaded, shortheaded and mediumheaded. Th is resultsin the different race divisions—Ethiopian, Cau-casian, and Mon golian. Th e second method of classification, according to the texture of the

hair, is due to the fact that hair may he woolyand kinky, curly and wavy, or straight andsmooth. Th eir racial nam es are: first, Neg ro;second, AngloSaxon, Iranian, and Aryan; andthird, the straighthaired or Eskimo and Mon-golian type. W hen and where these divisionsand distinctions first appeared is not absolutelycertain. At the end of the glacial period ma nwas thinly spread over Eu rasia and Africa. Th elife he lived, isolation, the country he inhabited

and inbreeding, caused the development of thetypes we have today arbitrarily called races.

How May One Find His or Her

Own Color?

Ce r t a i n kinds of color excite us; others sootheand please. Th e nun clothes herself in black

to typify the despondency of a faith crushedunder the sense of original sin. Th e happybride robes herself in white; and red inflamesthe anger of certain animals.

Color today is being greatly used as a curativeand therap eutic agent. As such, various colors

are used and recommended, dependent uponthe condition or ailmen t of the patient. How -ever, the true color vibration, which is perma-nent, can be obtained roughly in the followingm ann er. H ave the person be seated, relaxed, looking into a ray of light which is reflectedfrom the sun. Place a prism in front of thisray and allow the seven colors of the spectrumto play slowly, in turn, upon the open eyesof the person. On e color will he found in the

spectrum which feels pleasant, or exhilaratesthe individual, in contrast to the irritationsof the others. Th is one color, or mixture of

colors, is the person’s own “ color.” Such color strengthens the person’s mentality as well as

“tones up” the nerves of the individual.

What Is the Kabala?

Th e r e are several types of K aba la. On e is theJewish, one the Christian Mystical, one

the Magical Kabala, one the Alchemical, onethe Rosicrucian and another the Hindu . It issaid that they all had their origin in the ancientmystery schools of Atlantis. Th e Egyptian andthe Hindu Ka balas are the closest to the originalteachings which we have today. A great many

scholars believe that the Jewish and the Chris-tian Mystical Kabalas were obtained from theEgyp tian. Even in the time of Christ thereexisted a secret doctrine among the Jews.Hausrath, a great scholastic theologian, haspointed out that the main tenets of medievalJewish Kabalism existed and were used at thetime of Christ. Ho w far beyond this it ex-tended we do not know.

Naturally, such a body of knowledge wasvery secret and was kept for the select fewrather than given out indiscriminately. The

mystical play Dybbuk will give one an idea of how true mysticism is passed by word of mouthrather than by written methods. Th is secrettraditional knowledge of the Jews was their

Ka bala. A certain Rabbi, Simeon ben Yohai, placed in writing the main teachings of the

Kabala, against the wishes of his contem-poraries.

This fountainhead of the Kabala is knowm asthe Z ohar, or  The Book of Splendor. Differentwriters studied the Z ohar  and worked out their own arrangement of cosmogony and other philosophical tenets. Na turally, you can see

that due to the great bulk of material in theZ ohar  there would he great divergence in the

various systems. Th e medieval Jewish Kabaladrew' on the Sepher Sephiroth and Asch Metzarep h as wrell as the anc ient ge nu ine Jewishwork, Seph er Yezirah. As a result, what weknow of today, and wTat the Jewish people of today say is their Kabala, is classified under four heads: Practical, Literal, Unwritten or

Oral, and Dogmatic. The practical part deals with ceremonial

magic, such as divination, talismans, etc. Th e

Page 8: AMORC - The Hidden Archive (1973) Eighteenth Edition.pdf

Literal part is subdivided into three partsknown as Gematria, Notariquon, and Temura.Gematria is based on the numerical value of words. Th e Notariquo n is the study of the

Kabalistic shorthand. Th e Temu ra is the studyof various cypher methods for the combinationof the Hebrew alphabet. Th e Dogm atic Kaba lacontains the specific doctrines as follows:Nature of the Supreme Being, cosmogony, creation and destiny of angels and men, thenature of the soul, demons and elementals; theimport of revealed law, symbolism of numeralsand equilibrium of contraries. Such a study

gives one a sense of sublime majesty and aglorious purpose in life. Th e Kab ala teachingsemphasize the attainment of equilibrium.

The Egyptian Pantheon, known as the PautNeteru of the Egyptians, is an older mysticaltreatment of the same principles which arefound in the Hebrew Kab ala. The re has notbeen as much work and research among stu-dents at large on the Egyptian Kabala as onthe Hebrew; consequently it is only among theRosicrucians, the Masons and the Egyptologiststhat we find a fair understanding of the Egyp-tian Kabala.

Neter  is identical with the Hebrew Ain Soph. The papyrus Nesi Amsu describes in detailwhat is scattered throughout the Egyptian Book of the Dead—that is, the order of emanation of

the various Hierarchies of powers that corre-spond to the ten Sephiroth of the HebrewKahala. Ra corresponds to the Hebrew Kether; Tefnut corresponds to the Hebrew Binah; N utcorresponds to the Hebrew Gehurah; Seb corre-sponds to the Hebrew Chesed; Shu correspondsto the Hebrew Chokmah; Osiris corresponds tothe Hebrew Tiphereth; Horus corresponds tothe Hebrew Netzach; Nephthys corresponds

to the Hebrew Hod; Set corresponds to theHebrew Yesod; and Isis corresponds to the He-brew Malkuth.

By referring to the Book of the Dead under the various Egyptian names quoted and bystudying the Zohar  one can see the similarity. It is generally conceded that the EgyptianKabala is much the older, more systematic, andon a high er intellectual plane. Th e Book of the

Dead presents a wonderful opportunity for study, as does the Zohar.

The Holy Grail

Th e   Legend of the Holy Grail appears in

ma ny and widely different forms. It is true

that no amount of research will ever untanglethe web of Grail stories.

However, the Holy Grail definitely does havea history. According to tradition, it is the cupwhich Christ used in His last supper. Christgave the cup or Grail to Joseph of Arimatheawith the express charge of chastity, saying thatthen it would remain among his lineal descend-

ants. Joseph added to its preciousness by catch-

ing the blood of the Saviour in it as He washan ging on the cross. Th is precious vessel be-came the chief treasure of Joseph’s household.Joseph and his family came over to Britain withthe cup, or Sangreal. W hen he arrived he madea round table, to seat thirteen, in commemora-tion of the table used at the Last Supp er. Th eRound Table of King Arthur was a copy of this table. At Joseph’s death the cup washanded down from son to son until one de-

scendant disgraced the cup. It was then thatKing Arthur and his knights sought for theHoly Grail.

The Grail, a very beautiful cup of gold andsilver, was made even more so, in time, by theaddition of jewels designed as fruit. It was saidto have miraculous powers; so much so that

very few were pure enough in heart to behold it.There were two meanings to the power of the

Holy Grail. Th ere were those who sought theGrail because it brought health and all the goodthings into their lives, and would also bringgreat happiness to the country wherein itexisted. Oth ers believed that the Gra il wa s alsothe source of spiritual life.

It has been reported th at the Grail was known

to be in existence in Glastonbury, England, sev-eral years ago. The re is “ Th e Order of theFellowship of the Knights of the Round Tableof King Arth ur” in existence today. Th eir ad-dress is King Arthur’s Hall, Tintagel, England.

There are many versions of the story of theHoly G rail or cup of great sanctity. Most of them overlap. Th e best is the one known asthe Grand St. Graal, which dates from the

thirteenth century. It tells how one Joseph of Arimathea, a mystic Essene of Jesus’ time, acquired a cup which had been used at the Last

Supper, to catch the blood which flowed fromthe wounds in His hands and feet after theCrucifixion. Joseph later went to Britain withsome of his followers. One Mordrain, who aided

Joseph upon his arrival, constructed a monas-tery where the Grail was housed.

A descendant of Joseph of Arimathea, oneAlain, is said to have placed the Grail, at alater date, in the castle of Corbenic, where it

came into possession of some of the Knights of Kin g Arthur. The nce it was supposedly takento Glastonbury, believed by many to he its

present resting place.

The Hidden Meaning of the Alphabet

A s t h e   child has first to learn to pronouncethe letters of the alphabet, so the inner

man has to learn first to think and then feelthe letters of the alphabe t. Eac h letter of thealphabet in any language has a mystical power.Th is knowledge is very old. Th e Rosicrucianswho compiled the great hook of secret symbolssay in the preface that it is for the Abcdarians, for young disciples practising in the school of

the Holy Ghost.

The twentyfour letters of the Greek alphabet(from which comes indirectly our Englishalphabet) are emanations delineating on high

the three powers which encompass the Uni-verse and the heavens and the elements. Th enine soundless letters (h, g, d, th, k, s, t, f)belong to the Father and the Truth.

The half sounding (1, m, n, r, z, x, kh, f),eight in number, apply to word and life, for they are halfw ay between. Finally, the sevensounding letters, (a, e, e, i, o, y, o) point out toman and religion, for the voice came out of man

and created all. Th e Kabala also has a philo-sophy for the Hebrew alphabet.

Who Were the True Aryans?

Th e term Aryan was formerly used in the lastcentury to denote the unknown source of

the language of the various people known asIndoEurop ean. Philologists used the word

Aryan as synonymous with “Japhetic” whose

original home was supposed to be the plateauof Iran or Arya in Asia and “Japhetic” becausethey were regarded as descendants of Japheth,

a son of No ah. Th e Semitic or Shemitic family

Page 11: AMORC - The Hidden Archive (1973) Eighteenth Edition.pdf

was so called because they are believed to bedescended from the Biblical Shem, another sonof No ah. Also the Hin dus called their country

Arycivartci or “the land of the Aryans.” Specifi-cally, “ the land of the Ary ans” w as a tract of land between the Himalaya and the Vindhyaranges. The Egyptian hieroglyphics and recordscontain information concerning a certain won-derful people which inhabited their land at avery early date. On e historical as well as occultexplanation of the origin of the Aryans is thusbased on the fact that the original Aryans wereboth Hind us and Egyp tians. Th ese originalAryans reportedly came from the continent of Atlantis. According to this legend, there werethree great cataclysms which shook ancientAtlantis. Th e people were warned and pre-pared after the first great cataclysm so thatwhen a second occurred they migrated throughcentral Europe over to Asia in the HimalayaCenter. However, some of the Atlanteans re-mained in the ancient continent to gather up

the remainder of their records and wisdom andwhen the third great cataclysm started, theycame out from the doomed continent imme-diately before it finally sank beneath the waves.

This second group of Atlanteans crossedNorthern Africa and settled in the region of the Nile, about 16,000 years ago , founding the

culture now known as Egyptian . These people,Hindu and Egyptian, both from the same con-tinent of Atlantis, remained apart from theother inhabitants for a number of years; how-ever, those who did not intermarry finallyperished because of their small numbers, andso ended the true Aryans. W ith a few possibleindividual exceptions, there are no direct des-cendants of those Aryans today.

How do Occultists Explain the Wearing of Birthstones?

Je w e l e r s say that the belief in a special stonebeing dedicated to each month of the year

only dates back to the first century of theCh ristian era. Occu ltists know, however, thatthe belief far antedates that time. In fact,Egyptologists give many references to the use

of jewels and birthstones by the ancient Egyp-tians, as well as the ancient Hindu s. It is fromthe Gnostics that the Christian world borrowedits belief regarding birthstones. Th e Gnostics

in turn got theirs from the ancient Chaldeansand Hebrews.

The material is weighty, though interesting,

which deals with all the different hirthstones. Therefore, we shall give only a brief summaryof the at trib ute s a scribed to twTo of the birthstones.

The diamond is supposed to bring victory toits possessor by endowing him with fortitude, strength, and courag e. It served to drive awayghosts. It was generally regarde d as a gem of reconciliation between lovers. It was also sup -

posed to possess the medicinal property of beingan antidote for poisons, though, according tothe autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini, thediamond itself when taken internally is verydeadly. In addition to being an antidote for poisons, the diamond was used to cure diseasesof the bladder, the plague, pleurisy, leprosy, and jaundice.

The ruby is usually considered the birthstonefor July. It stands for great courage. Theancient and medieval peoples believed that theruby possessed the quality of warning of the

presence of poison by becoming dark andcloudy. In the same man ner it was believedto indicate that evil, misfortune, or danger threatened its owner. Th e ancients also be-

lieved that the ruby absorbed the rays of thesun, and in the old Talmud mention is madeof bowls of ruby being used for artificial light. The ruby was considered a powerful charmagain st sadne ss and against vice and sin. Therewas an old belief that if the four corners of ahouse, garden, or vineyard were touched withthe ruby, these then would be preserved fromlightning, tempest, and worms. Th e Burmese

believe that rubies ripen in the earth like fruit. The Burmese also believe that the ruby makes

the wearer invulnerable. Th e Hindus, too, be-lieve that the possessor of a fine ruby may livein peace and harmony in the midst of hisenemies. Medicinally the ruby has been usedfor the cure of the plague, hemorrhages, dis-eases of the eyes and liver.

Genuine adepts and Rosicrucians, such asParacelsus, believed in hirthstones possessingcertain properties. Bu t in order to make theproperties of these stones beneficial to their

owners, Paracelsus and others went through amystical process somewhat similiar to thatwhich Dr. H. Spencer Lewis used on oneoccasion in New York, whereby the jewel or

metal is consecrated and charged magneticallywith energy and power from the Cosmic. Then,in reality, the stone carries this energy or vibra-tion, acting as a chann el for cosmic power. Dr.Lewis habitually wore a ring set with diamonds.Madame Blavatsky always wore a ring set with

chalcedony.

Is Sir Francis Bacon Author of the

So-Called Shakespeare Plays?

T h e r e is a widespread belief that Lord FrancisBacon, Viscount Verulam, was the son of

Queen Elizabeth by a secret marriage. Nich olasBacon raised the child. Francis Bacon wa s de-frauded of a large sum of money when NicholasBacon died. Later, when Queen Elizabethacknowledged him as her son, she helped him

to better his position. Bu t Bacon wrote playsand allowed an illiterate actor, a man who couldnot even write, to sell the plays for him. Th isactor’s name was Shakespeare.

Bacon’s book, Advancement of Learning, con-tains the main cypher that explains these cir-cumstances through messages concealed in theShake speare plays and sonnets. Bacon used two

other cyphers, the “Kaye Cypher” and the“ Simple Cypher.” The “ Simple Cypher” wasused when he told of his connections with theRosicrucians; the “Kaye Cypher” when he toldof intimate personal affairs.

The socalled portrait of Shakespeare attachedto the Sonnets in 1640 can be shown to be amask shadowing the features of Francis Bacon.

The plays of Shakespeare are watermarked withBacon’s crest and the border designs showfigures and symbols evidencing Bacon’s author-ship. The re is other evidence in W estminster Abbey, such as the scroll on a monument, thedesigns on Shake speare’s statue there. Nu m er-ous other facts of this nature have been dis-covered by research and excavation. Bu t thebest proofs are contained in the secret sonnetsascribed to Shakespeare. W ithout any cyphers, but just by close study, the autobiography of the BaconShakespeare personage can be tracedin them.

The Mithraic Mysteries

T

h e tenets of the Mithraic Mysteries con-tained the highest occultism. Mithraism

was of Persian origin. M ithra, the personifica-tion of Light, was worshipped as a son of Godfive hundred years before the Christian era. Itwas carried into Asia Minor by the Magi. Itsubsequently traversed a wide geographical areaand became an immense influence in the Ro-man world. M ithraism is said to be the onlysect in the history of thought with which Chris-tianity had to engage in mortal combat. It

almost overcame Christianity and did exert aformative influence on Christian doctrine, such

as those relative to the end of the world and thepowers of hell. M ithra was of great beneficence, endow ing the earth with all of its benefits. Hewas the Med iator betwixt God and man . Hiscreed promised resurrection to a happy futurelife. T he story of his life is similar to that of Christ’s; yet Mithra came first by five hundredyears. Those who followed Mithra wereinitiated into his mysteries and passed under hisdivine protection. Those following Mithra were

united in brotherhood regardless of rank or race.
