Web Based Writing

Web based writing is good writing adapted according to the limits of the Web as a medium the needs of Web users.

"Good writing," by definition, is plain text that does not usually call attention to itself. One can also call it "transparent writing," text that lets you see the subject without even noticing the words that convey it.

What is Web Based Writing?

Concept of : Dumbed down and revved up

• Web has some severe limits as a medium. Text on a computer screen dumbs us down and revs us up.

• Low resolution dumbs us down by reducing our reading speed to around 75% of our print-reading speed. So we should try to say in 75 words what we'd normally say in 100.

• Text designed to be read on the screen needs to be concise. Sentences need to be short. Paragraphs too should be shorter.

Helping users navigate

• Web users tend to scan around a new site, something like the way paper readers skim the headlines before settling on a story. Navigation aids are crucial. A subheading to every few paragraphs is one such aid.

2. Inform:Information can be related to anything- from news, technology, food, lifestyle, shared interests, etc.

3. Entertain: Entertainment does not necessarily pertain to videos and music...there are

many good blogs that publish enough material to make you laugh the whole day!

4. Change Behaviour: Sometimes, what starts as harmless surfing ends up with a lengthy credit

card statement...
