I hope you all had a great summer!

As I sit here, the solar eclipse has just occurred, and Labor Day is not very far away – by the time you read this, it will be over.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer – even if it doesn’t end on the calendar for another three weeks. Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achieve-ments of American workers. So congratulations!

I trust all of you we saw at our summer rally at Pla-Mor Campground in Indiana had a great time. I want to thank our VP Rally Coordinator, Janet Staer (and Jim), and those that assisted for putting on a great rally in Bremen, Indiana. From my vantage point, we all had an enjoyable time. The weather, which was pretty good, certainly coop-erated. I have to say I enjoyed the cloggers that provided our entertainment one evening. In fact, got tired just sitting there watching them. What a great way to burn calories (watching it – not participating).

I also hope those of you in attendance at the FMCA Inter-national Rally in Indianapolis had an enjoyable experience. We had a few rainy days. I was on the parking team and we had one day where we were absolutely drenched – when we received five inches of rain in one day. I have never been that wet without being in a pool. At least, not that I can recall.

One of the requests from members at the summer rally was the possibility of adding some additional product discussions in the future. I have taken that to heart and I will put together a presentation for next summer… stay tuned. And, if you have suggestions for discussion areas, make suggestions. A place to start would be listing what you’d like to know more about. I’m sure that we have some others in the club who may have extensive knowledge of the product or subject. At a minimum, there are probably others that can part with what we know and, in a group discussion, help in wading our way through.

At Bremen no Nominating Committee was elected. This is a vital committee that proposes officers who serve two-year terms. One-half are proposed every year. We are in need of volunteers to serve on this committee. Please consider giving of yourself to this committee.

Please consider volunteering for the nominating commit-tee as well as an office. This Club is run by volunteers and we need your help in keeping the Club functioning. We also need Rally Masters – please contact Janet Staehr for more information.

Our winter Rally is the “Flamingos and Beaches Rally” which will be held March 4-9, 2018 at the Flamingo Lake RV Resort in Jacksonville, Florida. Please see the adver-tisement elsewhere in Travelore, and well as our web site.

The next FMCA International Rally will be held March 15-19 in Perry, Georgia.

As of this writing, the summer rally will be held in Love-land, Colorado. Again, it will be in advance of the FMCA International Rally scheduled for July 18-21 in Gillette, Wyoming. I’m looking forward to being in Loveland, Colorado for our summer rally. It ought to be beautiful summer weather in Colorado with the advantage of being on the front range of the Rockies and within an easy drive of Rocky Mountain National Park.

By the way, Rocky Mountain National Park’s 415 square miles provides visitors with a spectacular mountain envi-ronment. In fact, you can enjoy Trail Ridge Road – which crests at over 12,000 feet, with pull outs to experience the subalpine and alpine worlds – along with over 300 miles of hiking trails, wildflowers, wildlife, starry nights, and fun times. Estes Park, the eastern gateway to RMNP, is about a 30-mile drive up a canyon highway, US 34.

See you down the road—

FMCA Update

Results of FMCA Governing Board Meeting in IndyThe Governing Board met in Indianapolis to act on a number of proposals and to elect a slate of Executive Officers for FMCA. The positions voted on were: National President, National Senior Vice President, National Secre-tary, and National Treasurer.

The results are as follows:• National President - Jon Walker• National Senior Vice President - Rett Porter• National Secretary - Gaye Young• National Treasurer - John Reynolds

Verizon Data PlanThe plan initially offered by the FMCA to attract new members was withdrawn after implementation because it was determined that a nonprofit government organization (which is how the FMCA is classified) does not qualify for benefits offered by the plan. New arrangements are being worked on but it is too early to know what the new plan will offer or when it will be available.

Chandler UpdateThe financial update was given on the Chandler rally. A re-clarification was made to state that FMCA did not lose money on the rally nor was the level of profit as antici-pated.

Location UpdatesPomona should be considered as an option for 2019 winter rally despite the usually small draw to that area and the fact that the FMCA has never had a profitable rally there. The last one drew only 900 coaches but the committee felt the low turn out was due to a lack of promotion. The com-mittee felt that it was still very important for the FMCA to have a rally somewhere on the west coast. An amendment was made that would allow the executive board to negoti-ate for a suitable new location in the western portion of the continent.

Redmond was approved for the 2020 rally.

Proposed AmendmentsThe following three bylaws amendments were proposed:

Proposal #1 – Any voting FMCA member, other than a member who is employed by or holds a management inter-

est in an RV-related association or company, is eligible for election to the Executive Board. Members who share a member number may not serve concurrent (simultaneous) terms on the Executive Board.

The proposal was defeated.

Proposal #2 – Membership shall be open to any family unit or individual regardless of race, sex, gender identity (including gender expression), sexual orientation, religion, color, marital or family status, age nationality, disability, or political beliefs.

The proposal was defeated.

Proposal #3 – The proposal is too long to fully restate here. The proposal would allow a qualified group of recreational vehicle owners to become full members of FMCA.

Much time was spent on defining “recreational vehicle” since one was not given ahead of time. The Executive Board felt the definition should be something the Govern-ing Board should do. FMCA’s procedural guidelines were voted on and approved to allow the definition and the pro-posal to be implemented this year which will allow FMCA to begin accepting the new members as early as December if approved by the general membership. Otherwise, even with approval by the membership, FMCA would have to wait until Wyoming which would be the earliest time the process could be made official and begin accepting the new members of units other than motorhomes. If the Govern-ing Board voted to approve the proposal a ballot would then be sent to the entire membership base to be voted on. It would be a mail-in ballot that runs for three months in the FMCA magazine.

The following definition of RV was adopted: The term “recreational vehicle” as used herein, is defined as a self-contained, wheeled vehicle that includes permanently installed cooking, sleeping, and sanitary facilities.

The outcome of the vote was 226 for and 48 against, exceeding the 65 percent that was needed for approval. The proposal to allow towable RVs, using the agreed upon definition of an RV, will now be sent to the general mem-bership for a vote.

Note that rallies are self-funded and operate on a break-even basis. Incidental funds that remain are added to the General Fund.

With this definition of a recreational vehicle, the Diesel RV Club voted to support the proposal. However, any changes to bylaws remain to be approved using DRVC processes.

New Business The following Process and Procedure amendment was made because some members felt that most chapters would adopt the “management practices” employed by the Executive Board although the board insisted that the chapters do not have to. This is to clarify that stipulation.

The Constitution Committee and Policy and Procedure Committee will review the chapter bylaws format to clarify conformity to the Constitution, Bylaws, and Policies & Procedures of FMCA. As to what is mandatory, recom-mended, and permissible deviations and give concrete examples of such.

Entertainment on Monday evening was the Heartland Country Cloggers. The members of the quick-footed group come from a radius of 100 miles and were fascinating.

For the free time on July 4th and 5th, several chose to do the road rally. Rally check points included Rentown Country Store (an Amish grocery) near Bremen, Nap-panee’s Coppes Commons (a building built in 1878 and at one time housed the best cabinet making shop in the US), Amish Acres (an 80-acre Older Order Amish farm homesteaded in 1873), Yoder Popcorn in Shipshewana, the Menno-Hof Museum where we learned the differ-ences between the Hutterites, Mennonites and Amish, the Shipshewana Flea Market and the amazing Wakarusa Dime Store.

For the Photo Contest at this Rally, individuals were encouraged to have their own pictures printed. The top three winners were each given a $25.00 gift card.

Two different crafts were provided for the participants. Small wooden barn quilts were made on Wednesday and on Thursday memory wire bracelets were made.

Continuing with our tradition, 50-50 tickets were sold with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Bremen.

During Breakfast on Friday morning, the clouds in the west looked very dark. Some storm warnings forecasted. As a result, those planning to leave after breakfast hastily took some food and got things together just prior to the down pour that did hit. It rained until about 2:00 p.m. causing us to receive about five inches of the rain and strong winds. Water was everywhere since the camp-ground was mainly flat but those remaining weathered well. Due to the unexpected weather event, a few extended their stay at the campground an extra day. Others made their way on to the FMCA Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase which followed the Bremen rally.

One of the craft projects was painting a quilt block on a square of wood.

OTHER BUSINESS FROM THE FLOOR:There were questions and discussion about the Pizza and Greet to be held at FMCA following the diesel engine semi-nars (CAT and Cummins) and whether it should be pub-lished in the daily FMCA paper. The general consensus was to keep it as it is with announcements at the beginning of the engine seminars.

Discussion also developed regarding current FMCA proposal to include Towables in the future. Clarified by Richard Marvin that at the Indianapolis meeting there will be discussion to structure any change over a 3 year transi-tion period after which each FMCA member and chapter will have a vote. There will be more information on this following the meeting in Indianapolis.

It Is Time

Schedule Annual Medicare Maintenance NowMedicare Open Enrollment begins October 15th and ends December 7th. Reviewing your Medicare annually is just as important as scheduling your motorhome annual engine maintenance. Why? Because you may need to make changes. Regardless of how you supplement your Medi-care, open enrollment should be calendared for the reason provided above, a change may be in order. Unfortunately, many folks enroll in Medicare supplemental plans and never look back.

Medicare Part D is evolving and changing annually. It is the most misunderstood component of Medicare. Know-ing how it works is critical to your wallet and your health.

Medicare Open Enrollment Is a Call to ActionTaking a few simple steps will provide you peace of mind for the coming year for RVers and others on Medicare.

Step #1 -– Your Medicare Part D plan or Medicare Advan-tage/Part D should be on your calendar October 1 each year. That is the date you will receive your “Annual Notice of Change” from your insurance company. Open it imme-diately! Look to see if your monthly premium is chang-ing. Also, check to see if your preferred pharmacy lost its contract with your insurance company. If so, the resulting action can dramatically drive up the cost of filling your prescriptions.

Step #2 – Pay close attention to drug formulary changes. In other words, are your prescriptions changing Tiers or being completely dropped from the formulary?

Most companies have 5-Tier formulary lists. Typically one can expect Tier #1 to be Preferred Generic Drugs, Tier #2 Non-preferred Generic Drugs, Tier #3 Preferred Brand Name Drugs, Tier #4 Non-Preferred Name Brand Drugs, and Tier #5 Speciality Drugs.

In 2013 insurance companies began shifting expensive generics to a higher formulary Tier. For example, a prior Tier #2 non-preferred generic may now be mingled with higher cost Tier #3 preferred brand name drugs. When this happened unaware consumers found themselves paying a much higher cost for generic medications. A person on a large number of maintenance medications could easily experience significant, unexpected, out-of-pocket expenses from the previous year.

Step #3 - Conducting your review will tell you if staying on your current plan is okay or be the clue to shop for a new plan for the coming year.

Medicare clients who annually follow these three steps can wind up saving hundreds of dollars. If you already have a Medicare agent, ask them to assist you. Seeking the ser-vices of an agent specializing in Medicare costs nothing. Agents are trained and paid by the insurance companies to provide customer service so don’t be afraid to ask.

Finally, just like you attend rally seminars on taking care of your motorhome, attend a Medicare Educational Seminar. Become Medicare savvy and take better care of yourself!

See You On The Road!
