The Life Pod Project is designed for a writer that required a new house build in the wood-lands near Manchester. The intent of this design was to create a distinctive feel for this writ-er who needed natural daylight throughout the building so she could enjoy the pleasure of reading and writing. The materials that are chosen for this high quality sustainable home are timber cladding and glazing to overlook the surrounding landscape. From analyzing all the research gained from various projects, there has been a particular curvilinear shaped roof that has been used in many of his residential projects. This resembles the water as all three projects are surrounded near water. The client required that this building must be near a river so I had incorporated the feel of the surrounding landscape creating an astonishing curved roof that overhangs over the balcony area to balance out shading during summer.

Providing for access and circulation for pedestrians, automo-biles and service vehicles is an important aspect of site plan- ning, which influences both the location of a building on its site and the orientation of its entrances.

SITE ANALYSIS

The University of Salford is looking for a suitable location for a new stand alone building. This building will need to provide catering, relaxing and health/fitness facilities for mem-bers of staff. We will need to consider suitable rooms and spaces in and around the building in order for the building to function appropriately. In Task 1 part A I will be looking at exist-ing floor plans of existing buildings with similar facilities that will be directed to the brief.

Design Brief

Urban Grain and Building linesLooking at building lines in relation to the surroundings to the other buildings can determine a location for a new build. We look at these to see how each building has a pattern and the arrangement is based on basis of size, depth, and orientation and relationship to the street and block.Building lines should generally be respect-ed and buildings generally aligned parallel to the street. From looking at these building lines I have come to the conclusion that the building will be set in this position to respect the pattern and orientation of the existing buildings.

Design Proposal PrecedentsAestheticsDue to the space of the two floors, we had to create a double volume floor to allow an extravagant entrance, so that the users of the building would be entering into a complete different environment, so that they can relax and enjoy the facility. This also minimizes the floor area. The spaces are well proportioned since it will accommodate 4 different sections, Self-service restaurant, bar lounge, spa facilities and the gym.

PerformanceDuring the process of designing, we located strong room relationships between the main areas as a starting point. For example the kitchen had to serve two areas if the bar lounge and self-service restaurant was located on one floor, but this was decided that the overall ground area will be two large to accommodate these two facilities. Therefore we had to have service lifts locat- ing the first floor. As you can see in the plans you can see that all rooms have been carefully looked into due to easy accessibil-ity for disabled users. There are disabled toilets located on the ground floor near the entrance for easy access. The disabled shower is located near the lift on the first floor since it is easy to access in the middle than in the corner of the building. The only thing that may or may not need changing would be easier access in the spa facilities for dis-abled users. This is one area that will need to be looked more into detail.

Urban GrainAll these buildings have a comparison with eachother. There is relationship between chapman, the new build and uni- versity house with the shapes and curtain walling façade. Some elements consists from one building to another, there is a strong influ-ence from Lady Hale building to the chapman building. With the colours and use of glass. These elements have been considered while designing to allow it to fit in the giv-en surroundings. The building, which has been de- signed, has respected the existing building by its colour, shapes and materials. The concept has applied the understand- ing of the new build urban structure and grain, ensuring the design provides a spatial consistence with its surroundings.

The client has required for a new build for the School of the Built Environment. The University has decided to demolish the exiting Gilbert Rooms, with an innovative proposal for a build-ing for majority of the School of the Built Environment (SOBE) environment’s activities. We will need to consider suitable rooms and spaces in and around the building in order for the building

to function appropriately.

Dramatic doors and entryways creates significant effect in entering a place of unknowingness. For this building we want to create an atrium to build an expressive outlook over into the sur-rounding area of the entrance to the reception. We have chosen the University of Salford colours to bring out the identity of the University. Red, Grey, White and Black are the colours that will be incorporated into this propos- al. Due to the lack of direct sunlight this will bring out the dark shadows that have been created from the 9 storey high building, Maxwell Upper Hall.

Irwell River Footbridge Project This design project entails for an innovative design approach for a proposed foot-bridge proposal located at Salford. The University of Salford will need to incorporate links between public spaces to the campus. This will be connected to the meadow park due to a proposal of restaurants and cafes located in the park. . There should be no bridge support structure built within the river as this will not get support of the Environment Agency. The research contained in this presentation will indicate the initial design concept stage for the footbridge scheme.

Many bridge designs are based on the concept of water and waves, through the curves. The bridge will have multiple identities from the exposed structure support-ing the bridge. Out of many of the bridges that have been researched, there are many elements that strike out the most, from which the first is the curved structure wrapping over from one side to the other, linking the structure together.
