Her point was that in the face of one of the worst events we could imagine, the next day our country was full of strength, compassion and love. We reached out and hugged total strangers. We gathered on street corners waving the American flag. We queued up to donate blood. We brought food to police and fire stations. We did anything we could think of that was a gesture of love for one another. It seems this country has moved away from love and I’d like a return to that world of peace. Let’s make giving love and kind gestures a daily habit instead of a response to tragedy. Part of creating a peaceful world is having healthy relationships with those around us. Characteristics of healthy relationships with your coworkers, family members, friends and neighbors include mutual respect, trust, honesty, compromise, good communication, anger control, problem solving, and understanding. Compromise doesn’t mean giving in but instead being able to acknowledge different points of view and be willing to give and take. Anger can be controlled by taking deep breaths, or walking away for a few minutes until you are ready to speak rationally. Mutual respect is understanding the other person’s values and boundaries. Problem solving should be done together so that all parties can contribute to the solution. I challenge all of us to stop, breathe and think before negativity leaves our mouths. Do we really need to chastise our neighbor for not pulling the weeds in his front yard? Do we really need to complain about his barking dog? Remember what our mothers taught us: if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. I like to say let’s play together nicely in the sandbox. One way to combat negative feelings is to employ the best medicine: laughter. No matter how I feel, I make an effort to laugh—deep, belly laugh—at least ten times per day. If each of us works hard to extend a smile and a kind word, what a different world we would have. Just think how much better we would feel if instead of grumbling at the neighbor, we took a few minutes of our Saturday morning and pulled the weeds for him. He’d be surprised and grateful and we’d have that priceless reward we get from unconditional acts of kindness. ’Tis the season of giving! FOURTH QUARTER 20I9 OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER

As the holidays approach we enter that time of year when we surround ourselves with the comfort of good friends and family. The current national climate seems more volatile than in years past and I think this is

even more reason to show extra love for those around us. I read somewhere about a woman wishing we could have another September 12, 2001. Let me be clear: she did NOT want another September 11, but instead September 12. Her point was that in the face of one of the worst events we could imagine, the next day our country was full of strength, compassion and love. We reached out and hugged total strangers. We gathered on

street corners waving the American flag. I challenge all of us to stop, breathe and think before negativity leaves our

mouths. Message from the CEO

Derrick CuencaMountainView Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to Our New Senior Amigos Fitness Instructors!MaryLouise Pino has been a fitness enthusiast for many years! She currently teaches spin at Crunch Fitness, and in the past taught spin at the City of Las Cruces, Parks and Recreation Department.

She was the wellness coordinator and Walk Dona Ana coordinator. She enjoys running, spinning, riding mountain and road bikes. She is married (34 years!) to Joseph Pino and has two children, Jody (also a fitness instructor) and Marissa (her angel in heaven).

Have you ever been to the Deming Duck Races?

Julia Fuller is from El Paso and has three children and two grandchildren. She’s worked for the State of Texas and Ysleta School District. She loves to dance. She is experienced in ballroom dancing, country line dancing and Zumba. She’s certified in Zumba Basic 1 & 2, Gold, Toning, Aqua and Sentao. Helping people get motivated is what she’s all about!

Roberta Stathis holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in education. She is a life-long fitness enthusiast, but

new to fitness instruction. Roberta develops instructional materials for K-12 and in her spare time likes to hike, swim, and read.

Here’s why I ask. My wife and I made the decision to take advantage of every free

weekend we have to get out and enjoy this beautiful area. Our two sons, ages 2 and 4, have therefore found themselves at everything from Carlsbad Caverns to the Hatch Chile Festival to…the Deming Duck Races. I asked around about the duck races, and nearly everyone I spoke to knew about them, but I had trouble finding someone who had actually attended. So we went and had a great time watching the various races, both dry and wet. I know more about racing ducks, now, than I ever imagined possible. Now, both my sons (and my two Labrador bird hunting dogs) are eager for me to stock the pool with our own ducks. That’s probably not going to happen. This is just one, small example of all there is to do in our region on any given weekend. The trick is simply getting out and doing it. We, as a family, have found that these shared activities are good for us. That’s what ties this story to our MountainView Senior Amigos. There is benefit in being active. There is joy in being active. I know that many of you really look forward to your classes and events at our Senior Amigos. That’s why we exist. We believe that active and engaged lifestyles, with events where we socialize, laugh and have a great time, are of true significance to each of us. These provide a means to live healthier and happier lives. As an added benefit to us, we have the opportunity to speak to each of you, in ways such as this column, to inform you about all that we are doing at MountainView to serve our community’s healthcare needs.

Expanded Cardiovascular Care Clinic Operational On August 5, 2019, our expanded cardiovascular care service line kicked off when Dr. Craig Cannon, Dr. Angela Motta and Kimberly Miller, DNP began seeing patients. At this time, they are working out of Suite 405 in Building 3, MountainView Medical Plaza. They join Dr. Joseph D’Antonio and Dr. Scotty Smith. Dr. Smith operates our Cardiovascular Care Clinic in Deming, NM.

MountainView Heart and Vascular Center Taking Shape This expanded cardiovascular care service line is a key component of our new combined clinic. MountainView Heart and Vascular Center which will bring our cardiovascular care, cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular

surgeons together. They will create a strong and effective healthcare enterprise, aimed at the treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases for our region. This combined clinic continues to grow with the addition of Dr. Vitaly Piluiko, CV/CT Surgeon and Robert Fakler, PAC. Both of these providers join Dr. Sepehre Naficy and Marcia Jamison, PAC who will grow this service line for MountainView Also included, as part of this new clinic, are Dr. Michael Keller and Cheryl Lombardi, CNS who provide a strong foundation to our vascular surgery capabilities.

Construction Work Underway in Building 3 Work is underway for the construction of a new clinic space that will house our cardiovascular care service line. The location is the west end of the second floor of Building 3, MountainView Medical Plaza. We anticipate accepting the finished project and being able to occupy in early 2020.

Expanded Cardiac Imaging Also Underway Another key component of our Heart and Vascular Center is its ability to partner with MountainView Regional Medical Center for expanded cardiac imaging for patients. MountainView is proud of the strength of our cardiac imaging capabilities and the technicians we have to provide these services. In order to support the expansion of cardiovascular care, MountainView recently expanded our outpatient cardiac imaging services in Suite 407 of Building 3. This is a short-term solution. Action is already underway for construction of a new cardiac imaging and testing suite on the 4th Floor as part of the ongoing construction effort. Great things are happening for our community at MountainView! I look forward to further opportunities to visit with each of you and provide even more details of the amazing happenings underway here. In the meantime, please accept our sincere thanks for your time and interest, and most of all, your participation in the MountainView Senior Amigos.

Derrick Cuenca, MountainView CEO

The next time you visit MountainView Regional Medical Center, take a minute to scan the area for folks interacting with patients in the hospital. Many aren’t wearing scrubs or a stethoscope. Chances are you’ll see dozens each time you visit, perhaps starting with the receptionist that greets you at the door. Many of those folks are actually volunteers, helping to make sure things run efficiently and that patients are comfortable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, over 4.9 million Americans volunteered their time in a hospital or health-related organization. MountainView Regional Medical Center appreciates its volunteers who support our everyday operations. Our volunteer program is robust and we always welcome people interested in volunteering. In addition, volunteers who are 50 years old or better can join Senior Amigos for FREE! Volunteering is the right thing to do for so many reasons: for your community, for your health, and for your leadership development. For more information on volunteering at MountainView call or email Annette Morales at 575-522-0502, [email protected]. In spite of the stress of life and the lack of time—or maybe because of it—get out there and volunteer. Do good, feel happier, build relationships, learn new skills and have an impact on something important to you.
