All over Europe, the roll-out of smart meters is ongoing. With more meters being installed, the potential of using meter data for the benefit of consumers and grid operators is rising exponentially.ESMIG and its members are showcasing the exciting possibilities and advantages of using meter data by putting together an innovative interoperable, multi-vendor smart meter infrastructure that not only enables collection of billing data but also facilitates smart meter-based grid management and provision of real-time data for consumer-focused applications.

This infrastructure is based on existing standards such as CIM (IEC 61968-9), DLMS/COSEM and MBUS and shows a fully cloud-based interoperable solution for:

1. Grid operators / energy suppliers: the data generated by smart meters, necessary for billing and grid management, goes via a cellular connectivity (GPRS/3G/LTE) and HSM-based security solution to the grid operator. Here, different applications can provide cloud application consumer billing and analytics, multi-vendor meter management and data collection, and virtual power plant connecting flexibility providers to the various layers of energy markets.

2. End-consumers: the data providing insights for consumer energy efficiency and management is collected by a device the consumer chooses (like an in-home display or an app) on near real-time basis (down to seconds). The consumer has access to a personal cloud data platform to monitor the real-time consumption of different devices around the house and can adjust consumption patterns or choose an automated solution for optimizing energy usage.

Regardless of the scale of a smart meter roll-out, the following 11 vendors demonstrate a fully interoperable, cloud-based AMI infrastructure in which various IT platforms work together to enable grid operators / energy suppliers to provide more accurate information, security and better service to their customers.

Existing research and latest experiences from roll-outs have shown that providing real-time feedback for electricity and gas can lead to savings of 9.2 % and that in-home displays represent the insight channel leading to the highest savings (7,8%) – read more in our latest report ‘The role of data for consumer centric energy markets and solutions’.

Who organised this demonstration?ESMIG, the European association of smart energy solution providers, represents companies that provide products, information technology and services for multi-commodity metering, display and management of energy consumption and production at consumer premises.

We advocate for a regulatory framework that accelerates the introduction of our members’ innovative products and services, which are fundamental to the smart energy and water systems of Europe’s future.

On top of this, we actively contribute to the creation of a competitive internal energy market through the development of architectures and open standards that allow efficient

implementation and integration of new energy management technologies and services.

Who are the companies participating in this demonstration?Chameleon Technology Chameleon Technology is the leader in smart energy data solutions in the UK and its smart IHDs are interoperable with European protocols. Chameleon’s data platform can connect real-time energy data to smart home solutions - appliances, storage, EVs, microgen. Chameleon’s cloud-connected devices extract real-time smart meter data and send this to the Chameleon cloud. Chameleon performs logic on this data and

sends it to a smart meter home cloud service or App. Personal insights help users manage their consumption better.

cyberGRIDLocated in Vienna, Austria, cyberGRID was founded in 2010 as a specialist in the development of innovative Virtual Power Plant (VPP) solutions.

GemaltoGemalto, a Thales company, is the world leader in digital security and offers secure solutions to connect and protect smart energy devices, the data they exchange and the cloud. The smart-energy-dedicated cybersecurity solution in the demo leverages the world-leading Hardware Security Module (HMS) to generate and provision robust keys and credentials into smart-meters. The solution ensures the protection of metering assets for long lifecycles as well as metering data privacy

and integrity, through digital authentication and encryption mechanisms.

Geogeo are the UK market leader in smart metering displays, focused on the digitisation of energy from the consumers perspective. From geo’s connected displays and data services they control and automate home heating, appliances and storage globally.

KEY TAKE-AWAYS FROM THE DEMONSTRATIONThe key take-away from this common demonstration is firstly that:

Interoperability is not a wish. It’s a reality that you can ask for. Standards are available and the industry has defined the necessary additions to standards that complete the package for reaching full interoperability.

Secondly, the demonstration shows that:

The technology is available to securely process data from smart meters in cloud applications and manage the protection of sensitive metering assets, as well as their data transfer and storage. Cloud applications are available to relay data towards a variety of third party applications, analyse consumption patterns and inform or advise consumers about their consumption.

Finally, we confirm that:

Real-time consumption data feedback results in substantial savings for consumers as proven by our research and the latest experiences from the United Kingdom. Advanced technologies complete a smart meter roll-out and should be offered to consumers at the same time or soon after the installation of smart meters.
