EXTRA CREDIT: LINEAGE RESEARCH Due: September 13, 2012 Point Value: 2 points Instructions: The purpose of this extra credit opportunity is to show you the types of documents used by historians, and for you to conduct your own historical research. In this case, using ancestry.com (note the free two week trial that conveniently aligns with this assignment) to trace your lineage back to a great-great-grandparent. Requirements: Find the name, birth place, and occupation of your great-great-grandparent. Fill out the blank family tree provided below. See page two for an example family tree   created using census data found through name searches on ancestry.com. Tips: Begin by conducting a search for a grandparent, using their name, date of birth, and place of birth. When you locate a grandparent in the census, you will also see the information for their parents (your great-grandparents). Write that information down, then do a new search for your great-grandparent. Repeat. I will demonstrate how to conduct this type of research on anc estry.com during class on September 6, 2012. NOTE:  There will be future extra credit opportunities to conduct research and see different types of historical sources. No one will miss out on the chance for extra credit because few records exist for their family, or limited access to international documents.

 EXTRA CREDIT: MUSEUM EXHIBITION REVIEW

Due: December 1, 2012

Point Value: 2 points

Instructions: This extra credit opportunity involves viewing, and using the historical knowledge you

have gained in this class to critique a museum exhibition. Specifically, the photographyexhibition currently hanging at the Harn Museum, entitled, “The Modern Impulse:

Photography from Europe and America between the Wars.”

Requirements: Write a 2 – 3 page essay reflecting on the exhibition —double spaced, 1” margins, TimesNew Roman, size 12. Examine the exhibition as a whole, and specifically review two of

the exhibition’s five “thematic areas.” Those areas are:

“Art and Technology: New Visions and the Modern City”

“Pure Photography and New Objectivity”

“Dreams, Memory, and Desire: Surrealism in France and the Czech Republic”

“Social Activism and Modern Life: Documentary and Reportage”

“Mass Media: Photography for the Public”

Questions/Issues to Consider:   What advances in photography technology made these images possible?

Examine the subject matter. What historical events or trends are captured? What is the

photographer’s intention in capturing the scene? What does it tell you about that time and place?

How the artistic movements of the day (i.e. Surrealism, Constructivism, New Objectivity) influence the

photos?

Which photographs/artists do you find the most appealing or moving? Why? (include name and title)

Most importantly for our purposes, how do these photographs reflect the historical events of the

1920s that we have discussed in class?
