About Amnesty

Major points▪ 1961, Peter Benenson, founded launchd “Appeal for Amnesty” after 2 portugese students

were jailed for raising a toast to freedom.

▪ 1963, The first prisoner of conscience is released, after long campaigning.

▪ 1972, Amnesty launches its first campaign against torture. 12 years later the UN votes to combat torture worldwide.

▪ 1977, Nobel peace prize winner for contributing to ‘securing the ground for freedom, for justice, and thereby also for peace in the world’

▪ 1980, launched the first campaign against the death penalty

▪ 1993, Amnesty campaigns for an international criminal court (icc) to bring those responsible for genocides and war crimes to justice.

▪ 2006, Nelson Mandela became ambassador for Amnesty

▪ 2007, Ali Sayed al- Shihabi was released after being arrested for expressing his opinion on the internet.

Through the newsletters, social media such as Facebook or Twitter, magazines and proposal of membership, Amnesty International build partner Networks and raise people awareness around the NGO actions
