Louisiana Purchase

• Jefferson liked a small national government, but he still purchased Louisiana– Even though he wasn’t sure that the Constitution allowed it

• The debate between a powerful and less powerful national government continued…

Do you think acquiring Louisiana wasthe right decision for Jefferson to make?

Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea

• While Jefferson was President, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led a group of travelers to the west

• They were helped by Sacagawea, a Native American woman– They made it all the way to the west coast

• Over time, the expedition made Americans more aware and excited about the west

Manifest Destiny

• Ever since the first colonists came to America, Americans have been moving farther west

• By the 1840s, many Americans started to believe it was their “Manifest Destiny” (obvious destiny) to expand across the continent – from sea to shining sea

Page 6: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Reasons for Going West

• There were many reasons why Americans wanted to go west…

If you were living in America during this time, why might you want to move west?

Page 7: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Reasons for Going West – Wealth and Fame

• Adventurers and traders were some of the first people to travel to the far west– Some of them went west for money and fame

• Many people went west to California after gold was discovered in 1848-1849

Page 8: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

• Many settlers (including many families) went west– Some of them wanted to start a better life– Many families followed the Oregon Trail or other trails

• In 1848, the Oregon territory officially became part of America– In a treaty with England

Reasons for Going West – A Better Life

Page 9: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Reasons for Going West – Religious Freedom

The Mexican-American War

• Between 1846-1848, America fought a war with Mexico– One major cause of the war was America adding Texas to the

country (annexation of Texas)• Texas used to be part of Mexico before declaring independence

– This war was controversial

• America wound up winning the war, and gaining much more land

What is one positive and onenegative to this war?

Page 11: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Native Americans• So far we have been looking at westward expansion

from the American perspective• It was a very different story for Native Americans• Native Americans lived on a lot of the land that

Americans traveled to in the west

Page 12: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Native Americans

• In some places in the west, Natives and Americans lived in peace– In other places, Americans fought wars with Native

Americans to gain land• And many Natives died of diseases

Black Hawk

Page 13: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Trail of Tears

• From 1838-1839, President Andrew Jackson forced many Native Americans to move to a new territory– White Americans wanted the Natives’ land– This was not the only time Natives were forced to move

• Many Natives suffered and died on this journey– The journey of one Native American tribe, the Cherokee, is

called the Trail of Tears

What do you think Native Americans thought about the idea of “Manifest Destiny”?

Page 14: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Empathy

• One way we can really look at different perspectives is by having empathy

• What is empathy?

• To take someone else’s perspective (point of view)– And try to understand WHY they have this perspective

• ‘to walk in someone else’s shoes’– Try to understand what someone else’s life is like

Page 15: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Empathy Example

• If you are upset, do you want your friend to…– Ignore you– Tell you that you shouldn’t be upset – you should

just get over it– Say “I hope you feel better” without really trying to

understand why you’re upset– Try to understand why you feel upset

Page 16: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Empathy Example

• Your friend is a baseball player who made a bad play that lost the game for his team. He tells you about the play, and he is very upset.

• What do you think you should do?

Page 17: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Showing Empathy in Your Own Life

• Think of a time when you could be empathetic (a time when someone you knew was upset or angry or wanted help)– How would you show empathy in this situation?– Why would showing empathy help the situation?

• At least one paragraph (5 SENTENCES)

Empathy

• We use empathy in our daily lives– We also use empathy to understand other events

(like things in history)

• What perspectives are there about westward expansion– Americans– Native Americans

Page 19: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Empathy Example

“It hurt on my part, but he hurt even more. If it was me, I would want to take that back. I know how hard he's worked. Why not give him a second chance?”- Mo’ne Davis

• What states did some Native Americans live in before they were removed?• Where were they removed to?

– Why?

Page 43: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Indian Removal

• Many Native Americans lived in the eastern United States– Native Americans lived on farms, in towns

• White Americans wanted the Natives’ land• The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Marshall, said no

– President Andrew Jackson said “John Marshall has made his decision. Now let him enforce it!”• What is Jackson saying here?

Remember him?

Jackson is on the $20 Bill today

Page 45: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

Trail of Tears• The Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830– According to this law, Native Americans got western land

in exchange for their eastern land– Natives often did not have enough food, clothing or shelter

during their journey west• One group of Natives “walked for 24 hours barefoot through the

snow and ice”

• “Trail of Tears” refers to the forced march of the Cherokee Indians– 16,000 Cherokees started the march; 4,000 died

Why do you think the government approvedthe Indian Removal Act?

Page 46: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

• Then he was fired by American President James Polk

• “If these Mexicans have seen into my heart at that moment, they would have known that my feeling of shame as an American was far stronger than theirs could be.”

• What should Trist do now?1.) Listen to Polk and go home?2.) Make a treaty to get a lot of land from Mexico?3.) Make a treaty to get some land from Mexico?4.) Run away to Mexico?

Page 52: American Westward Expansion. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson became America’s third President He defeated John Adams in the Election of 1800 Jefferson.

“Manifest Destiny”

• What is “Manifest Destiny”– Belief that it was Americans’ fate to move from sea to

shining sea (to cover the whole continent)• Why did Americans move west?– Reason 1: Fame and fortune

• Example: 49ers during the Gold Rush
