2019 AMERICAN TROMBONE WORKSHOP
Welcome to the 2019 United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” American Trombone Workshop (ATW). This marks the 26th year “Pershing’s Own” has organized and hosted the American Trombone Workshop. From its beginning in 1974 as the Eastern Trombone Workshop, hosted by John Marcellus and John Mellick at Towson University, to today’s ATW, the workshop continues as an integral event for The U.S. Army Band, hosting leading soloists, clinicians, and educators, while also showcasing emerging young performers and trombone choirs from all across the country.
This year’s headlining artists include Colin Williams of the New York Philharmonic, Brian Hecht of the Atlanta Symphony, Technical Sergeant Christine Purdue Jones of the U.S. Air Force Band, and the Blue Ridge Trombone Quartet, who will all be performing with the outstanding ensembles of “Pershing’s Own.” We are also happy to welcome back Dr. Brittany Lasch, who was the first trombonist to win our National Collegiate Solo Competition and we will be featuring three bass trombonists on the stage at the same time - John Rojack, Gerry Pagano, and Russ Zokaites, premiering the band arrangement of the Fuch’s Bass Trombone Concerto.
Among the many ensemble concerts, solo performances, and competitions, you will be able to see our featured artists in masterclasses, lectures, and informative education panel discussions. And be sure to bring your horns to group warm-up sessions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Brucker Hall and leave with fond memories of great performances, new insights, and lasting friendships.

(When Ella and Louis did their record of “Porgy and Bess,” for example, it was Garcia who did the arrangements.) In 1955 Garcia put together a unique ensemble: 4 trombones, bari sax and rhythm section. The featured soloists in the band were Frank Rosolino and, on valve bone, Maynard Ferguson. Eric Felten acquired the original arrangements, and his American Trombone Workshop performance will be the first time in decades this music has been heard live. Among the tunes to be performed are “What Is This Thing Called Love?”, “Limehouse Blues,” and “I’ll Never Forget What’s Her Name.”
