American Revolution

• An outnumbered 13 colonies of America gains independence from Great Britain through war tactics and courage

BIG IDEA

WHAT IS HAPPENINGFrench and Indian War • Great Britain defeated France (very costly war) • Led to heavy taxation of 13 colonies

Slavery • Slavery is very popular in the South• Helped grow crops and other difficult tasks

Taxation • Great Britain is heavily taxing colonists to make up for losses

during the war• Leads to colonists not purchasing imported goods

YOU ARE HERE

• The year is 1765, you are twenty years old. You own a home, a slave, and have a family

• You are very angry about the heavy taxation & mistreatment from Great Britain

• The War has began and you have all been enlisted and will fight for your country to gain independence!

Proclamation of 1763 • Prohibited settlement past Appalachian Mountains • Colonists felt the couldn’t expand (Manifest Destiny)

French & Indian War • Left Britain with a large debt • Led to higher taxes for people in the 13 colonies

Townshed Acts • Taxed items like glass, paper, and tea• Angered colonists

• Signed by many men including Thomas Jefferson (added life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness)

• Jefferson got this from John Locke’s Idea of Natural Rights

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

• Comes from John Locke (highly regarded Enlightment thinker)

• Believed Natural Rights were right given to EVERYONE

• Right to Life, Liberty, and Property• Believed gov. should be overthrown if they

don’t protect these Natural Rights• This time period of marvelous thinkers became

known as the Great Awakening

• A commander has not returned home after the war

• Foul Play has been suspected and you have all been found guilty in the lower court and have been sentenced to life in prision

• The Supreme Court will now hear your case thanks to Judicial Review
