EXPERIENCE

SCOTLANDChapter One

A land of unspoilt natural beauty, its rich heritage reflected in its magnif icent castles and estates, passed down through generations

Page 4: AMERICAN RESERVATIONS JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE HIGHLANDS · A two-night adventure into the heart of the Highlands combining breathtaking scenery, outdoor pursuits and a visit to

Many of Scotland’s most striking colours and sights are found in The Cairngorms — home to Britain’s highest mountain range, ancient

Caledonian pine forests and numerous rivers and lochs. At its heart is the Rothiemurchus Estate, where visitors can enjoy country pursuits such as clay-pigeon shooting, hill walking, fishing and spotting birds, including the osprey in summer.

The story of Scotland’s past can be told through its many historic castles and houses, including 16th-century Ballindalloch Castle, beside the River Spey, and still the family home to the Macpherson-Grants. It has a fine collection of 17th-century paintings and a “single estate” distillery — the first of its kind in Scotland. Foulis Castle, seat of Clan Munro for more than 700 years, is a Georgian mansion overlooking the Cromarty Firth, while Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the Queen

Mother, is renowned as one of Britain’s most haunted castles.

Modern Scotland’s most successful export is whisky and the Strathisla Distillery, where the famed Chivas Regal is crafted, is one of the oldest in the Highlands. Little has changed since its founding in 1786, from the old cobbled courtyard to its distinctive pagodas. Striking architecture of a different kind is found at Glenfinnan, a pretty village at the northern end of Loch Shiel. Its magnificent 21-arch railway viaduct played a prominent role in the Harry Potter films and it is also where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the Jacobite Rising.

Equally eye-catching is Kyle of Lochalsh, gateway to the Isle of Skye. The journey there is a picturesque ride past the Torridon Mountains, along Loch Carron to Plockton, whose nearby waters are home to wild seals.

A HIGHLAND ADVENTUREFrom snow-capped mountains to golden beaches, ancient castles

to vibrant cities, Scotland has so much to offer the traveller

It may be a small country, but there is an incredible variety of landscapes from the lowlands to the Highlands. The perfect way to discover this land of unspoilt natural beauty is on board Belmond Royal Scotsman, which reveals all this and more on an unforgettable journey.

From the moment Belmond Royal Scotsman welcomes you on board with a traditional piper, you journey in comfort to discover a land of mountains

and rivers, castles and gardens and world-famous distilleries. All journeys aboard Belmond Royal Scotsman begin and end in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The city is a wonderful blend of historic landmarks such as Mary, Queen of Scots’ former hideout, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and contemporary attractions, such as the world-famous Fringe festival, one of the largest and most dynamic arts events in Europe.

Mahogany marquetry provides a opulent setting and creates a warm glow in the cabins, of which there are 15 twin, three doubles and four singles, including an interconnecting cabin, all with an en-suite shower room, a desk and wardrobe and a generous window from which to admire the passing countryside.

In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable).

If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable).

You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme.

Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by us will be protected by the ATOL scheme. Protection for all Packages not including flights is provided by means of a separate trust account in which all monies paid to us in respect of a Package will be held until the Package in question has been completely performed. Non-Package arrangements and arrangements not booked or departing from the UK are not protected by these arrangements.

On certain trips a minimum number of persons is required for the tour to take place. We will notify passengers at least 56 days before departure if a trip is cancelled for this reason. The applicable deposit (15% unless otherwise stated) must be paid to us when you book (or if booking within 56 days of departure, full payment must be made on booking).

If there are fewer than 12 passengers in your party, and if you have made your booking more than 56 days before departure and have paid a deposit to secure your booking, the balance of the cost of your arrangements (including any applicable surcharge) is due not less than 56 days prior to scheduled departure. If there are 12 or more passengers in your party, payments must be made as follows: 15% of the cost of your arrangements is payable on booking, a further 35% of such cost (including any applicable surcharge) is due 90 days before departure (if your booking is made between 90 and 56 days before departure).

If your booking is made less than 56 days before departure, you will be required to pay the entire cost of your arrangements at the time of your booking. If we do not receive (in cleared funds) the balance in full and on time, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled by you, in which case cancellation charges will become payable. Cancellation charges apply in the event you or any member of your party cancels a confirmed booking. These charges will increase the closer to your departure date that you notify us of a cancellation.

We regret we are unable to offer you any assistance if you are delayed at the outward or homeward points of departure. Non-UK passport holders, including other EU nationals, should obtain up-to-date advice on passport and visa requirements from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of your destination or country(ies) through which they are travelling.

We reserve the right to amend the price of unsold trips at any time.
