American Lutheran Church, Gibson City, Illinois “Committed to Love and to Serve” December 2018 Newsletter From the Pastor The Christmas Season is meant to be a time of great joy and peace! However, stress or depression may set in and keep you from enjoying the holidays. Here are a few helpful tips from the Mayo Clinic website to help minimize holiday stress: 1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you cannot be with loved ones, realize it is normal to feel sadness and grief. Take time to cry or express your feelings. You cannot force yourself to be happy. 2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, then find community, religious or other social events that offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others is also a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. 3. Be realistic. The holidays will not be perfect. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. 4. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they do not live up to all of your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they are feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression, too. 5. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Try these alternatives: donate to a charity in someone's name; give homemade gifts; or start a family gift exchange. 6. Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and then make your shopping list. That will help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. And make sure to line up help for party prep and cleanup. 7. Learn to say “no.” Friends and colleagues will understand if you cannot participate in every project or activity. If it is not possible to say “no” when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time. 8. Do not abandon healthy habits by letting the holidays become a free-for-all. Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water so that you do not go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. Get plenty of sleep. Exercise daily. 9. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Take a 15 minute break without distractions to do something relaxing like reading the Bible or a devotional booklet; taking a walk at night and stargazing; listening to soothing music; getting a massage; or writing in your journal. 10. Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling continually sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable, hopeless, or unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a week or more, talk to your doctor. With God’s help may you have a peaceful and joyful Christmas Season! Pastor Jim Davis

From the Pastor

The Christmas Season is meant to be a time of great joy and peace! However, stress or depression may set in and keep you from enjoying the holidays. Here are a few helpful tips from the Mayo Clinic website to help minimize holiday stress:

1. Take a 15 minute break – without distractions – to do something relaxing like reading the Bible or a devotional booklet; taking a walk at night and stargazing; listening to soothing music; getting a massage; or writing in your journal.

LWR Newsletter Article December 2018: World Missions Quilts, school kit and personal care kit materials

have been collected, assembled and send on their way to the Minneapolis warehouse to be distributed around

the globe wherever there is a need. Our group contributed one hundred fifty quilts, 133 school kits, 68 personal

care kits and 18 pounds of soap. We are the collection point for nine surrounding congregations and the

numbers were amazing: 916 quilts, 14 baby layettes, 456 school kits, 357 personal care kits, 247 pounds of

soap, 9 fabric kits all packed into 283 boxes were sent on Ingathering day Saturday, October 27th. The

congregations also donated $1,824 to help with the cost of shipping. We recently received 2017 reports for our

central Synod district and the figures were even more amazing! Three semi trucks were loaded with 3,612

boxes containing 10,683 quilts, 5,875 personal care kits, 6,523 school kits, 1,316 baby care kits, 328 fabric kits,

2,224 pounds of soap, and 124 tied fleece blankets. In addition, $18,000 was collected for shipping. We are

truly grateful for those who have participated in this mission in any way---contributing fabric, blankets, mattress

pads, notions and sheets for the quilts; bringing in items for the kits; sewers and finishers who met on the 2nd

Wednesday of each month and those who sewed at home; the packers who put together the kits and sealed the

boxes; those who helped load on Ingathering Saturday; and those who contributed funds and prayers for this

worthwhile cause. God created us in His image as givers and missions such as LWR allows us all to be true

examples of stewardship. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. .—Luke 16:10a.

Our Annual Cookie Walk is scheduled for Saturday, December 1st from 8:00 am to noon in Parish Hall. Anyone who likes to bake may bring cookies for the Cookie Walk. The Handel’s Messiah Community Concert will be held on Sunday, December 2nd, at 3:00 pm in the Gibson City Bible Church. The Christmas tree in Parish Hall is designated as the “Mitten Tree”. Each year it holds donations of mittens, gloves, caps, and mufflers for both children and adults. They are sorely needed and appreciated during our cold Illinois winters. As you are shopping or if you have gently used items that are no longer needed, please help us fill the tree. We will be collecting until December 9th. All items are given to the needy in our area. Thank you for your generosity! You are invited! St. John’s WELCA will be holding their Annual Christmas Potluck on Wednesday, December 12th. The Ladies will begin with a Bible Study at 10:00 am led by Pastor Jim. Please leave your name, the number in your party, and your phone number on the church voice mail (217-784-4841). We need lots of elves to get the job done: chefs, bakers, servers, decorators, and cleaner uppers. The list of foods and services needed are posted in Parish Hall. Please sign up, and contact Tom Brucker at (217) 249-0663 with any questions. Reports for our Annual Congregational Meeting are due to Gerry by noon on Wednesday, January 2nd. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 10, 2019, after our worship service. All folks are invited to meet for Coffee and Conversation on the third Tuesday morning of every month, from 9:00 – 10:00 am in Parish Hall. The speaker and location for December 18th is still being verified, so stay tuned! Bring your friends and neighbors – there is a different guest speaker every month!

We currently have four students (Halie Heinz, Lindsey Heinz, Altin Nettleton, and Reagan Tompkins) who are participating in a Confirmation Class of twelve students from Chenoa (Trinity Lutheran), Colfax (Immanuel Lutheran), Fairbury (Trinity Lutheran), and ourselves. The joint classes will be led by Pastors Jim Davis, Tom Krieger and Chrissy Salser in 2019 and meet from 4:00-6:00 on the following Sunday afternoons:

Jan 13 – Gibson City – Am I supposed to believe Mary was a virgin? Why did Jesus get baptized? Jan 27 – Gibson City – Was Jesus of Nazareth God? Did Jesus know he was God? Feb 10 – Gibson City – Why does God let bad things happen? Is it ok to be angry with God? Feb 24 – Gibson City – If Jesus was God then why did he have to die?

United’s Web site. The web address is listed below. It seems to be working well but please let the Gerry know if you have problems.
