The Magic Carpet Troops Home – 75 Years Ago

WWII has ended. When peace broke out in 1945, first in Europe and then in the Pacific, our nation was faced with returning more than 8 million military personnel home. Three million troops were transported home

from Europe aboard 300 Victory and Liberty ships that had been converted to troop transports under the supervision of the U.S. Army and Merchant Marines. The new Essex-class carrier, USS Lake Champlain, that could handle 13,300 troops, was also called into service and thousands of wives and children of the troops were transported home aboard the Queen Mary that was on loan from England.

With war's end in the Pacific, the Navy's ships were converted for troop transport as best possible, even destroyers and LSTs. The number of personnel transported increased monthly. In September 1945, Naval Task Group (TG) 16.12 transported 8,241 men and War Shipping Administration transported 251,615. Monthly totals increased as more ships were converted. In December, TG 16.12 transported 370,596 men and 324,890 were transported by other means.

TG 16.12 completed this assignment with 369 ships including 6 battleships, 18 cruisers, 12 hospital ships, and 57 aircraft carriers. Of the carriers, 46 were CVEs, the baby flattops produced by Henry Kaiser's ship building operation in Vancouver, Washington. The carrier, USS Saratoga (CV3), won the record of transporting 29,204 troops from the Pacific. Finally, when the Southwest Pacific Theater was authorized to convert cargo vessels into transports, hundreds of soldiers volunteered to assist in the task.

Consequently, Magic Carpet returned soldiers from the Pacific faster than anticipated. Approximately 30% of the ships were allocated to the Philippines, 30% to the Marianas, 30% to Okinawa and Japan, and 10% to Hawaii, the South Pacific, Korea, and China. TG 16.12 at first returned sailors, but, by 15 March 1946, had carried about 42% of all returning service men & women and civilians. Magic Carpet transported 1.3 million of the 3.1 million Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine personnel and civilians back home from the Pacific. Operation Magic Carpet continued until April 1946 with the return of men from the China-India-Burma theater. With most of the troops home, the Magic Carpet operation was ended. Welcome Home. ~ Barbara Jones ~ Judge Advocate

The Chaplains Pulpit

I sincerely hope this finds you safe, healthy, and able to help others in need. A New Year has started after almost 11 months, by the time you receive this, of being shuttered, freezes, and changes in procedures. My hope is that many were able to have

Thanksgiving and Christmas in some manner and to look forward to the new year, vaccines, and understand we are going to get more help. I am with many who feel that our lives will change as it did in 1918 pandemic. Again, I see positives in all we are

doing. I must "Zoom" now 25 times a month or more, call veterans during "Buddy Checks" and members of the Legion and VFW, talk to business groups, and other contacts in the metro community over the last eleven years to verify that. The staying home, wearing masks, and distancing is working. It will take everyone’s effort to do same and make it work. I pray everyone will see that soon.

Over the last year I have talked about spiritual concepts, verses from the bible that help me, and I hope you were able to relate. The reason is, especially during this time, spiritual health, spiritual fitness, and walking with God leaves no room for negative thought or things that come between us. The election is now over, negatives continue, but I pray this too will pass. I truly believe the concept of "One Nation" has endured for over 200 years and will remain. We did have Post Everlasting ceremony in November 2020. We honored 65 veterans that had passed during the late 2019-2020 period since our last ceremony.

In February, around 3 February, we normally perform the "Four Chaplains" ceremony here at the Post. Due to the current circumstances in Clackamas County we are not able to meet together at the Post. So, I have added an article to cover the ceremony in trying to keep up tradition. If you wish to know more I am sure you can look up the full story on the website.

"Father God, we continue to maintain faith in You during this time of pandemic. The promise of vaccines, and a normal life contain us and we thank you for allowing this to occur for the world. You are the light that guides us, and Your blessings sustain us through this period of time. Help us all to understand change is coming and the need to come together as one people under God and for One Nation overall is necessary. We ask for continued help and Your spiritual guidance to the medical community to get all of them though this time of trial and stress. Give strength to those in mental stress, and with behavior issues, and most of all help the spiritual community to help all in need. In Your name, I

ask for your guidance but peace to all. Amen". Jerry Craig ~ Chaplain

THE FOUR CHAPLAINS

E ach year the American Legion honors the Four Chaplains with a dignified ceremony. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic it cannot be held in February inside. Therefore, we can provide a description of the

incident and what the Chaplains did to earn the one and only "The Four Chaplains Medal" authorized by Congress and awarded by President Eisenhower on January 18, 1961.

The Four Chaplains, also referred to as the "Immortal Chaplains" or the "Dorchester Chaplains," were four World War II Chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship S.S. Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943 (78 years ago). They were four Army Chaplains, Lt. George Fox, a Methodist; Lt. Alexander Goode, a Jewish Rabbi; Lt. John Washington, a Roman Catholic

Priest; and Lt. Clark Poling, a Dutch Reformed Minister. S.S. Dorchester was a civilian liner converted for military service in World War II as a War Shipping Administration troop transport. She was able to carry slightly more than 900 military passengers and crew.

The ship left New York on January 23, 1943, enroute to Greenland, carrying approximately 900, as part of a convoy of three ships escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba, and Comanche. During the early morning hours of February 3, the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223(sank by the British 30 March 1944) off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. The chaplains helped the other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. Of the 902 board, only 230 survived.

The impact of the Chaplains’ story was deep, with many memorials and coverage in the media. Each of the four chaplains was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. The chaplains were nominated for the Medal of Honor, but were found ineligible as they had not engaged in combat with the enemy. Instead, Congress created a medal for them, with the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor. It was also awarded posthumously.

"God of our Fathers and our God, we thank You for unity that the DORCHESTER Chaplains, these four men of God, demonstrated in life and death. Unity that is not uniformity. Unity that strengthens within each of us every worthy of faith and practice. Unity that transcends all our differences and makes us one in loyalty to our country and our fellowmen, and to our God. Grant us now Your abiding presence and may we remain faithful to the spirit of our Four Chaplains who, having learned to live and serve together, in death were not divided. Amen"

Jerry Craig ~ Chaplain

(continued from page 1) "We did it". Thank you Commander for making my crazy idea a reality, and Virginia my sidekick, together we brain stormed this whole idea. Yup in 2 1/2 weeks! Just think what we could do in a year of planning! Can you believe this all started with selling the colored sweaters for $2.00 apiece or what denomination you wanted. BTW, we did raise $473 in those sweater sales in 3 days before we shut down. However, it was not enough; we wanted/had to do more! With that money, we ordered cases of toys, which were similar to Lego’s, but were ninjas, construction trucks, airplanes, puzzles, books and dolls. Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus, and maybe a little angel sitting on everyone's shoulder wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Hope to see you all after the New Year! LeeAnn Gibbson ~ Outreach Coordinator

We need more members to participate in our Honor Guard. We have lost several members of the Honor Guard team to relocations and commitments to other family and personal activities. Our Honor Guard is expected to be called upon on a more frequent basis once this pandemic clears and with fewer members on the team we will be hard pressed to fulfill the requests we anticipate. Please consider getting involved in this activity and contact Jerry Craig, Honor Guard Commander (503-723-9988) for additional information.
