Supporting OurNation’s Mothers
For more than 80 years, theAmerican Mothers organization hasworked “to champion women byhonoring, educating and servingmothers at home, at work and inthe world.”
American Mothers was originally acommittee formed by a group ofinfluential citizens—includingJ.C. Penney, Norman Vincent Pealeand Eleanor Roosevelt—who strived tohonor the role that mothers hold instrengthening families and the nation. In 1935, Sara Delano Roosevelt, mother of then-president Franklin D.Roosevelt, presented the first Mother ofthe Year award to Lucy Keen Johnsonof Georgia.
Since then, the nonprofit organizationhas selected a Mother of the Year fromthe 50 states, the District of Columbiaand Puerto Rico, then named a nationalhonoree. Nominations can be made atAmericanMothers.org from Mother’sDay through Nov. 15.
The official sponsor of Mother’s Day,American Mothers works year-round toimplement service and educationalprograms, provide scholarships, andraise awareness of issues that impactmothers. They’ve also partnered withthe United Nations to serve mothersand families at a global level. Our residents loved watching
the kids search for Easter Eggs.

Reading for a CauseEach May, Get Caught Reading
Month is celebrated as a way toencourage people of all ages toread. How heartwarming would itbe to get caught doing a kind deedat the same time? Here are someways you can use your love ofbooks to give back to others:
Read to kids. Many preschoolsand elementary schools welcomevolunteers to read a story to a classof eager listeners. Or considerbeing a mentor to a child who islearning to read; he or she canpractice and gain confidence byreading to you.
Read to animals. Both dogs andcats are often soothed by thesteady rhythm of a human voice.Reading aloud to animals inshelters can ease their anxiety andhelp socialize them as they wait tobe adopted.
Read to hospital patients. Afunny story—complete with sillygestures and sound effects—can
bring much-needed cheer to childrenin the hospital. For adult patients, simply reading the newspaper tothem can brighten their day andprovide meaningful companionship.
Read to friends and family. Maybeyour neighbor loves literature, but hervision isn’t what it used to be. Payher a visit once or twice a week toread a novel together. Do you haveyoung grandchildren who live faraway? Many retailers offer recordablestorybooks, which can help you stayconnected to them.
