CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Welcome back to another year of meetings with the Keystone AFS. As our website indicates, the chapter's roots date back 115 years to Philadelphia Foundrymen's Association. We walk in the footsteps of many great leaders that this industry has produced. Our focus is to maintain what the previous genera-tions have given us while doing the same for the fu-ture. Support the AFS, FEF and CMI so that we can be held in the same light as our predecessors.
Trevor has an excellent schedule for the year with topics ranging from molten metal measurement to reclamation/reuse of sand to casting pricing. Also included is a tour of Lehigh Heavy Forge in May. There are also joint meetings with Lehigh Valley and Conestoga.
As always, the year started with the golf outing at Heidelberg. Once again it was a cloudless late sum-mer day scattered with the murmurings of a few missed pulls. It is always nice to know that some-times you can throw your 7 iron farther than you can hit it.
October's meeting is a joint Conestoga affair. The topic is a "Sand Reclamation vs. Beneficial Reuse" panel. Join us in Lancaster on October 9, 2007.
Regards, Mike Galvin

The map has been referred to in various circles as America's birth certificate and for good reason; it is the first document on which the name "America" appears. It is also the first map to depict a separate and full Western Hemisphere and the first map to represent the Pacific Ocean as a separate body of wa-ter. The purchase of the map concluded a nearly century-long effort to secure for the Library of Congress that very special document which revealed new European thinking about the world nearly 500 years ago
The only surviving copy of the 1507 world map by Martin Waldseemüller, was purchased by the Library of Congress and now on display in its Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. The term "America" can be seen in conti-nent on the lower leftmost panel.
A reported 1,000 copies of the 1507 map were printed, which was a sizeable print run in those days. This single surviving copy of the map exists because it was kept in a portfolio by Schöner (1477-1547), a German globe maker, who probably had acquired a copy of the map for his own cartographic work.
Thanks to ALCOA, this ancient map is housed at the Library of Congress in a structure made of one of the world's most advanced alloys. The company supplied 21,000 lbs of 6013 Power Plate Alloy from its Davenport, Iowa plate mill to the Bechdon Company in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (south of Baltimore) who fabricated the encasement. The project was funded by a $110,000 grant from the ALCOA Foundation.
It's fitting that the first industrial aluminum casting, made by the William Frishmuth Foundry in Philadelphia., has been perched atop the Washington Monument (just minutes away) for 122 years. Once again the metals industry takes a front seat in the history of the United States.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Welcome to another issue of the AFS Keystone Chapter's newsletter. Last months meeting had 50 attendees. Thanks to all that came.
Once again, it is the voting season. Practice for next year's Presidential election by going to the polls. The beauty of politics is that regardless of what happens, it is always the other sides fault. By this time next year we will be waist deep from all the mudslinging. So, get out the waders.
With November being here, it is time to get ready for winter. Soon, everyone will be gravitating to the fur-naces to keep warm. This month our topic is "What is your Molten Metal Temperature?" being presented by George Frigm from Heraeus Electro-Nite. So, if you have molten metal and you need to know how hot it really is, then join us in Lancaster on October 13, 2007.
Regards,
Mike Galvin

Entombed In Iron
Sept. 21, 2007 AP— Researchers have solved the mystery of the boy in the iron coffin. The cast-iron cof-fin was discovered by utility workers in Washington two years ago. Smithsonian scientists led by forensic anthro-pologist Doug Owsley set about trying to determine who was buried in it, so the body could be placed in a new, properly marked grave.
The body was that of 15-year-old William Taylor White, who died in 1852 and was buried in the Colum-bia College cemetery, they announced Thursday.
The mystery of this young boy's life and a strong sense of responsibility to properly identify him kept the entire team focused and determined. This was not a one-person project. It took more than three dozen people nearly two years to make the ID.
The cast-iron coffin was shaped a bit like an Egyptian mummy case and is of a type called Fisk style patented in 1848. This particular model was popular in the early 1850s among the well-to-do.
Almond D. Fisk, was the inventor of the Metallic Bur-ial Case which came into production in Providence, Rhode Island, around 1848 and whose company was acquired by Crane, Breed and Co. of Cincinnati in 1853.
Fisk's cast iron coffins came in shapes ranging from an Egyptian mummy to something resembling a deep-sea diver. Common to all was a glass window at the head, not to enable the deceased to look out but to let relatives look in. Fisk said the tightly sealed cases "may be filled with any gas or fluid having the property of preventing putrefaction." The intent was to preserve the remains of people who died far from home more or less intact until such time as they could be brought back for the family funeral. An iron coffin in 1850 would have cost approxi-mately $75 as compared to $2 for a pine box.
The cast iron casket didn't last long at 30-40 times the price of a wooden box, the fad pasted quickly.

EPA Comment Period on Source Rule Ends Nov. 1
On Sept. 17, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed an area source rule for iron and steel metalcasting facilities that would reduce the amount of par-ticulate matter (PM) that certain plants can emit.
The proposed rule states that metalcasters with a production capacity greater than 10,000 tons of melt per year would have to comply with a PM limit of 0.8 lbs., or 0.06 lbs. of total hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) per ton of metal melted. All melting furnaces at new metalcasting facilities would be subject to a PM limit of 0.1 lbs., or 0.008 lbs. of total HAPs per ton of metal melted. Facilities also would have to comply with a scrap management plan to reduce HAP emissions.
The EPA also is co-proposing two alternative regulatory approaches:
• raising the production threshold to 15,000 tons of melt per year;
• establishing a rule that would apply to all metalcasters, regardless of size, that would require them to comply only with pollution prevention and scrap management practices.
The EPA initially proposed a 30-day public comment pe-riod, ending Oct. 17, however, they have extended the com-ment period until Nov. 1. The Agency is under court order to finalize the rule by Dec. 15.
As a result of the industry's efforts in Washington, the EPA included a number of regulatory options and alternatives in the proposed rulemaking package and requested comment on them. The AFS Washington office will be working closely with the AFS 10-E Committee to develop the best approach for commenting on the rule on behalf of the soci-ety. CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Once again, the ball has dropped in Times Square ushering in a new year. Each year we continue to see our industry adapt to the changing market place. Ten years ago, everyone was concerned about NAFTA and the ensuing flood of work going south. Now - , even those guys are worried about the Asian market-place. Soon it could be India or Brazil. Meanwhile, the US foundry industry maintains its status quo with fewer producers. Technology and our proximity to the end user are the two of the key factors that con-tinue to keep us strong.
Upcoming on the AFS calendar for 2008 is CastExpo in May. This year it is an equipment show being held in Atlanta. Locally, the AFS East Coast regional will take place in York, PA in October.
Our topic for February's meeting is "Casting Pricing and Estimating" being presented by Jon Giesige from Boose Aluminum. Join us in Lancaster on February 12, 2008.
Have a healthy and prosperous year,
Mike Galvin

It's not easy being gray
It's a tough time for lead. News that the heavy gray metal was found in paint on toys from China caused a huge stir on Capitol Hill. Now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is really letting the metal have it. The form of the attack: children's theater. The EPA and Wailtown Children's Theatre hosted the play Flakes in Durham and Goldsboro, N.C., for three nights this month to focus attention on protecting children from lead poisoning and residential lead hazards. Flakes is a 45-minute play for elementary schoolchildren with songs and dances that focus on the dangers of deteriorating lead-base paint. The EPA even named the week of Oct. 21 "National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week."
Lead takes part in many games
Are your workplace and workforce in compliance with OSHA rules? Don't want to travel to Chicago for an AFS sponsored course?
The Cast Metals Institute, in conjunction with the AFS Keystone Chapter, will be offering an OSHA 10-hour General Industry Training Program March 10-11 in Allentown, PA.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Thank you to all that came to the February meet-ing. Approximately 30 people attended on a snowy, icy winter night. Special thanks to Dana Cooper from Ashland Chemical, who gave a talk on the benefits and services of the AFS Division 14 Committee on Marketing and Management. Thanks to Jon Giesige, from Boose Aluminum, for presenting a talk on the estimation of casting pricing.
We will be hosting a CMI course on OSHA com-pliance on March 10 and March 11, 2008 at the Holi-day Inn in Fogelsville. This is the Holiday Inn at the corner of 78 and Rte 100 right next to the brewery. Our March dinner meeting has been moved to the same location for the evening of March 11, 2008. Please note the location change so we don't have any wayward people driving around the Pennsylvania countryside.
Regards,
Mike Galvin

For 75 years Pacific Steel Casting Company has been a thriving business in the Bay Area, casting compo-nents for projects like the Bay Bridge and US Navy. Now the city of Berkley wants to declare the company a public nuisance.
Pacific Steel, Berkeley in Settlement Agreement February, 182008 City had threatened foundry with "public nuisance" declara-tion

Pacific Steel Casting has entered into an agreement with the city of Berkeley, CA, to reduce noxious odors coming from one of its plants in the city. According to local news reports, the voluntary agreement was reached as the city council prepared to consider declaring the company a public nuisance.
No terms of the settlement have been reported.
For several years, the company has been the target of local activists who object to odors and fumes from the operation. Pacific Steel Castings is one of the country's largest steel foundries, and pro-duces castings for commercial vehicles and water valves. It uses shell-mold, green-sand, and air-set processes to produce carbon and low-alloy and stainless steel castings weighing up to 7,000 lb.
Late in 2005, Pacific Steel agreed with the state's environmental authority to install carbon absorption systems to control odors and emissions. The company also concluded a settlement with an activ -ist group in February 2007, whereby it also agreed to install new pollution controls.
In December 2007, an Alameda County Superior Court judge awarded thousands of dollars in damages to a neighborhood group that had sued the company, citing loss of use and enjoyment of their
property and mental distress. In her ruling, the judge found that that company had created a "private nuisance" for several of the plain-tiffs.
If the council had declared the company a nuisance, Pacific Steel contended recently, it would have had to close in order to avoid further penalty. In a letter to the council, the company agreed to "cut odor and emissions while producing superior steel castings," according to the local reports.
Pacific Steel had said it would have to shut down and lay off 640 workers if the city went through with its formal nuisance proceed-ings to alter its use permit. Those proceedings could take time and end up in court.
This goes with some other crazy laws in California • It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game
from a moving vehicle, unless it's a whale.
• In Pacific Grove, "molesting" butterflies can result in a $500 fine.
• In Pasadena, it is illegal for a secretary to be alone in a room with her boss.
• It is illegal to set a mousetrap without a hunting license.
• In Long Beach, it is illegal to curse on a mini-golf course.
• In San Francisco, it is illegal to wipe one's car with used underwear.
• It is illegal to cry on the witness stand in Los An-geles.
• It is illegal to eat oranges in a bathtub.

This month, we have a change to our normal schedule. The topic of the month will be spectrome-ters and metallographic preparation. So, we have booked the Leco bus to be available for our meeting. Due to the scheduling constraints of the bus, our meeting has been moved back three weeks to April 29, 2008. We still meet on a Tuesday night at our normal Lancaster Quality inn location, just much later in the month. We have also been able to stay focused on our topic and have Pat Palumbo from Leco as our guest speaker. His talk will be on Glow Discharge Spectrometers.
In May, our meeting was originally scheduled to be joint meeting/tour with Lehigh Valley Foundry-men's Association. This fell through, but the meeting has now been rescheduled as a night of baseball with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in Allentown. They are the AAA associate of the Philadelphia Phillies. This will still be a joint meeting with Lehigh Valley and will take place as scheduled on Tuesday May 13, 2008. Nationally, the 2008 CastExpo begins Satur-day May 17, 2008.
Please note the schedule changes on your calendar and we'll see you in Lancaster and Allentown.
Regards, Mike Galvin

In April 2008 the peace symbol will be 50 years old
One of the most widely known symbols in the world, in Britain it is recognized as standing for nuclear disarma-ment —and in particular as the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). In the United States and much of the rest of the world it is known more broadly as the peace symbol. It was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist. The symbol stood for 'the death of man and the unborn child' and that symbol was designed from the naval code of semaphore - the code letters for N and D (nuclear disarmament). N is two flags, arms down stretched at a forty-five degree angle, and D is two flags, one arm straight up and one straight down.
The Direct Action Committee had planned what was to be the first major anti-nuclear march, from London to Aldermaston, where British nuclear weapons were and still are manufactured. It was on that march on April 4, 1958, over the 1958 Easter weekend that the symbol first appeared in public. Five hundred cardboard lolli-pops on sticks were produced. Half were black on white and half white on green. Just as the church's liturgical colors change over Easter, so the colors were to change, "from Winter to Spring, from Death to Life." Black and white would be displayed on Good Friday and Saturday, green and white on Easter Sunday and Monday.
The symbol was quickly adopted in the US when a friend of Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin began using it during civil rights marches. Anti-Vietnam war protesters picked it up, and it was called "the footprint of the great American chicken" by many American soldiers during the Vietnam War era. The power of this symbol
Thaiheimer Brothers, Inc. Non1erroizs Metals & Reside

is emphasized by the fact that during the 1970s, various far-right and fundamentalist American organizations se-riously considered forbidding it (they spread the idea of satanic associations and condemned it as a communist sign). In South Africa, under the apartheid regime, there was an official attempt to ban it.
As a symbol of freedom, it is free for all. It is often ex-ploited for commercial, advertising or fashion purposes. "We can't stop this from happening and have no inten-tion of copyrighting it, all we can do is to ask commer -cial users if they would like to make a donation". Any money received is used for CND's peace education and information work; says the campaign for nuclear disar-mament website.
