American Evolution Stories Overview

American Evolution commemorates the 400th anniversary of key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 and continue to influence America today. Signature Events, programs and Legacy Projects like American Evolution Stories (aestories.com) inspire local, national and international engagement to build awareness around Virginia’s unique role in the creation of the United States.

American Evolution Stories Overview (cont’d)

The goal of aestories.com is to reveal the full story of Virginia to America, foster conversations among our citizens and collect and preserve stories.

The objectives for participation are that audiences will learn more about the 2019 Commemoration, explore the many individual stories that represent the American Evolution, be inspired to share their own stories – on the site and through social media – learn more about the Virginia History Trails and download the app, and visit Virginia, where history lives.

The American Evolution Stories Platform

• Is designed to stimulate significant interest in the 2019 Commemoration, drive content across channels and foster connection to and participation in the Commemoration

• Enables audiences to explore the many individual and collective stories that represent the American Evolution, be motivated to share their own stories, and spread the word among their communities

• Gives audiences the opportunity to learn more about Virginia History Trails destinations featured in stories and become inspired to visit Virginia, where history lives

How To Submit Your Stories1. Visit www.aestories.com2. Explore Categories, Collections, Communities and the many stories that already live on the platform3. “Get Started”, register to login and create a username, password and display name4. Click “Share Your Story” in order to submit content and choose the type of story you’d like to submit (text/image, video, audio)5. Give your story a title6. Add the content of your story, including photos, if desired7. For video and audio stories “Choose File” to upload video or audio file8. Choose the appropriate Category/Categories for your post9. Choose a Collection or a Community (optional)

10. Enter appropriate Keywords for your post11. Tell the platform you’re not a Robot (confirm Captcha)12. Submit your story13. Share your story on social media

Designate a point person

• Someone in a communications role who can publish stories to the platform and share them on your organization’s social media

• Have them set up an editorial calendar (what you want to publish, when, and how to promote it)• Plan to regularly reach out to community and audience to invite them to share stories with you directly

or on the platform

Start collecting stories

• Collect the stories you already have: ask employees, board members, volunteers, donors and engaged audience members to share their existing stories with you

• Check your email, file cabinet and computer archives for stories people may have shared with you previously

• Create an urgent call to action for your sources/partners to work with you to collect stories, get them in front of your audience and use them to promote your destination

• Initial stories collected by August 1st

Start publishing stories

• No need to wait until they’re all collected. Once you have a few stories, publish them to the platform and share to your social media channels

• Initial stories published by August 6th

Ask for Help

• In addition to using the resources provided, contact the 2019 Commemoration for additional programmatic support and help and they will engage JMI to provide that support

• Reach out to JMI for questions on the platform or process
