At the YWCA-NYC, Black History Month 2010 did not begin or end in February, but has continued
year-round with an exploration of the National Book Award-winning book Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose. Clients, volunteers, board members and staff have come together to discuss the complicated layers that compose the Civil Rights Movement as described through extensive interviews with the first woman to not get off the segregated buses of Alabama: Claudette Colvin. After each session, participants inscribed a reaction, poem or illustration in the books to pass on to future readers.
In one book club event, McCann Erickson — the international advertis-ing agency known for the “Priceless” MasterCard and Army Strong campaigns — led students from the YW After School Program at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers in an art-driven celebration of Ms. Colvin’s courageous stand. All angles of Ms. Colvin’s story were examined including the institutionalized racism she was attempting to defeat, the sexism that impeded her courageous acts and the effect her actions had on her high school life and more. The students’ assignment was to design and present a creative
Throughout the year, YW Community Workshops have connected clients and community members with industry professionals. Held at the YW Family
Resource Center in Hell’s Kitchen, the workshops assist women in achieving per-sonal and professional success by revealing expert advice and insights from knowl-edgeable YW volunteers. Community Workshops have included:
“Are You ‘In’?” The first Community Workshop addressed how to market skills and experience through online social networking sites like LinkedIn. Connie O’Brien, Senior Vice President of Internet Strategy & Development, Marketing, and Innovation at AXA Equitable, led a discussion covering issues ranging from how to set up an account to what personal information to share.

project based on their interpretation of the book. An inspiring showcase of monologues, poems, collages and songs portrayed every facet of Ms. Colvin’s story. Presentations were then judged by McCann Erickson volunteers including Mark Strong, Africa McClain, Ian Davis, Kim Sanford and Nicole
“Want to Start a Business?” The next Community Workshop divulged the strategies and tactics employed by successful entrepreneurial women. Panelists included Robin Cohn, President of Robin Cohn and Company, and Elise James De-Cruise, Founder of AthletesWork, LLC.
“Applying for a Job Online?” At the third Community Workshop, Lindamarie Werntz Coatman, CAO and Head of Human Resources at China Merchants Bank New York led a conversation about applying for jobs online. The discussion revealed secrets to getting that coveted face-time from an online application.

2 It’s all about the W
Dear Friends & Supporters,Now in my eighth year at the YWCA-NYC and second
year as the CEO, I would like to express special thanks to the YW Board of Directors, the staff and our corporate and program partners for providing resources during this challenging economy. It is because of their dedication and commitment to our mission that we were able to continue offering programs and services to our clients and even secure funding for new or expanded activities. Here are a few highlights!
In partnership with The United Way of New York City, this past fall the YW began providing two new Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention (AIDP) programs for 160 incoming high school freshmen who experienced high dropout rates in 8th grade. The YW was funded to provide the United Way AIDP program in locations at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers (MBHS) in Lower Manhattan and Rachel Carson High School for Coastal Studies (RCHS) in Coney Island. This after-school program incorporates a holistic approach that stresses academic support and extended learning time, in addi-tion to counseling and family involvement services. Both programs were launched in September 2010, and I look forward to sharing news of their progress in the future.
I’d also like to tell you a little bit more about our work in Coney Island. The YW has been a part of this com-munity since opening the Roberta Bright Early Learning Center in 1985. Since then, we have served Coney Island families through high-quality after school programs at five public schools in the area. The addition of after school enhancements for teens at Rachel Carson High School
will allow us to leverage resources that the YW has already brought to the neighborhood on behalf of the children, youth and their families in the community. Today, YW programming that involves youth in the larger Coney Island area includes community service and large-scale events such as National Youth Service Day, Career Day and the Community Carnival. The YW also builds awareness and recognition for the community through events such as Salute to Coney Island and help in building relationships with key local agencies and other nonprofit organizations. The YW is a founding member of the Coney Island Coalition Against Violence, which marched on the world-famous Coney Island boardwalk this summer in response to a spate of shootings.
Finally, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome and introduce you to four new additions to the YW team. Susan E. Goldberg has joined the YW as our Chief Administrative Officer. Claire Borelli, Managing Director at UBS, Susie McCabe, President, Factory Store Concepts at Polo Ralph Lauren and Connie O’Brien, Senior Vice President, Internet Strategy & Development, Marketing & Innovation at AXA Equitable have joined our Board of Directors. With their help and that of our full board, staff and volunteers, we will continue to work diligently to assure the YW’s ongoing ability to offer programs such as AIDP, early learning, after school support and economic empowerment programs for over 5,000 New York City women and their families.
All of this would not be possible without the invest-ments of time and resources of our funders, friends and volunteers. Thank you again. We hope you will continue your support.
Warmest regards,
Anne Winters-Bishop Chief Executive Officer YWCA of the City of New York

YW High School Students Tour New York’s Premium IndustriesStudents of the YW After School Program at Murry Bergtraum High School have been given “backstage access” to the most alluring careers in New York City. By exploring these industries, the students find themselves especially motivated to pursue post-secondary education. The YW Career Tour Series has included:
Goliath RF Though it shouldn’t surprise the cultured New Yorker, one of the top street wear boutiques in the world is located in Spanish Harlem. At Goliath RF, the students from Murry Bergtraum were able to have a Q&A with founder Rosemary Frazier. The lively discussion covered small-business entrepreneurship and the importance of getting a higher education.
City Hall Murry Bergtraum is a short distance away from New York City Hall, yet its students had not actually been inside — until the YW stepped in. The students learned about the rich history of the building as well as the ins and outs of city government, and left with an understanding that a career in government is more than just being a politician; rather, it’s an inspir-ing opportunity to serve fellow citizens.
Promises, Promises Skipping lines and roaming backstage may seem like a luxury that only A-listers share, but the YW students left feeling like VIPs. Alex Volckhausen, stage manager for the show, led a backstage tour of the hit Broadway production of “Promises, Promises.” Students gained insight into the many facets of a huge Broadway production, includ-ing costuming and wardrobe design, electrical cues for the set and rehearsal and production preparation.
The Grey Group The creative team behind Cover Girl and Pantene, to name a few, gave the students an in-depth look at what it takes to produce ad campaigns for major clients.
Duke’s BBQ The tour of Duke’s BBQ was a two-part affair, covering locations in Gramercy and Murray Hill. Students learned about the inner workings of the restaurant business including front of house, back of house and management.
Chabre, and the winner was awarded a 30-day unlimited MetroCard and a $50 cash prize. The top prize was awarded to Christopher Robinson, whose abstract artwork illustrated the com-plex relationship between the actions of Ms. Colvin and of Rosa Parks, and the emotional implications of segregation.
Most recently, the book club series was taken to the YW After School Program at P.S. 209. Drama teacher Leigh Stein led the elementary school students through a series of improvisa-
tional exercises inspired by Ms. Colvin. The exercises culminated in a dramatic reenactment of Ms. Colvin’s actions aboard the segregated bus.
Up next, the YW sets its sights on the general public. In the coming months, www.ywcanyc.org will host video featuring New York City dwellers answering the question, “Do you know who Claudette Colvin is?”

On the evening of June 24, 2010, the YW threw New York City’s contempo-rary women a party that won’t be soon forgotten. Held at the newly opened Trump SoHo New York, the Sixth Annual Summer Soirée was alive with great food, dancing, performances and Y-tinis, as hundreds of YW supporters and friends gathered for summer’s most anticipated gala.
Guests arrived dressed in “black and white with a hint of persimmon” and watched as Maurice DuBois, Anchor of CBS 2 News This Morning and CBS 2 News at Noon, hosted the inspiring Soirée program. Two inno-vative and talented women, Donna Hayes (Publisher & Chief Executive
Officer of Harlequin Enterprises Limited) and Lisa Price (Founder & President of Carol’s Daughter) were bestowed with the 2010 W Award, and Sean Baucom, student of the YW’s After School Program at Independence High School, concluded the pro-gram with a special spoken word performance.
The YW would like to thank the companies who sponsored Soirée, including Persimmon Sponsors King & Spalding, Polo Ralph Lauren and UBS; the Soirée steering committee; and the dozens of companies and indi-viduals who contributed gift items to the Box Project and Silent Auction for making the event such a success.

Family Day
On June 5, the YW brought the families of Coney Island together for an afternoon of music, games, arts & crafts and other fun activities. From feeding animals in the petting zoo to being wowed by the clowns’ balloon art and magic tricks to partaking in the healthy food assortment, people of all ages had a terrific time at the YW Early Learning Center at Roberta Bright. The YW thanks the Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks volunteers for their help in producing the event, Whole Foods Market for providing fresh fruit and New York Spring Water for their donation of bottled water and Vblast! vitamin-enhanced water.
Around the World in Lego
On May 21, the students of the YW After School Program at P.S. 90 pre-sented Around the World in Lego, a showcase of the world’s most exquisite landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, Big Ben and many more, all recreated in brilliant Lego. Thousands of pieces were used for this project sponsored, in part, by HSBC Bank USA, N.A. Volunteers and Representatives from several international consulates like Réjane Burtin (from France), Michelle A. Lee (Australia), Stephanie Brydon Sirr (United Kingdom) and Raeesa T. Waheed (India) came to marvel at their country’s landmarks.
Your Dream Neighborhood
Your Dream Neighborhood was presented by the students of the YW After School Program at P.S. 327 on June 10. The children of the Brownsville community took their creativity to new heights, displaying the potential of what their neighborhood could be through LEGO structures. The culmination of months of research, planning and construction, this project was sponsored, in part, by HSBC Bank USA, N.A.
