Happy New Year to All!

With the start of the new year, get ready to attend the AAUW New York State Convention 2018! Stephanie

Lemnios, Mary Lou Davis, and Kimberly Edgar are busy planning an exciting and rewarding NYS Convention at

the Radisson Hotel in Corning, NY for the weekend of April 20-22. The convention theme is “Moving Onward,

Empowering Women.” A year has passed since women marched in large numbers around the country.

Where are we now? Large numbers are standing for public office and winning. The #MeToo campaign has

gone viral. The AAUW-NYS Convention is a “call to action” to us in how to move onward with empowering

women through our branches.

The Convention program is very powerful. You will hear from the new AAUW CEO Kimberly Churches

regarding the many changes at AAUW as we bring greater mission focus. We’re also very pleased to have “UN

Girl Advocate” Aasha Shaik speaking on Vulnerable Leadership & The Power of Girls. A panel discussion on

Advocacy in the Current Media Landscape and an LAF litigant talk will give much to think about. You will also

be able to choose from workshops on women’s health and reproductive rights, women getting a seat at the

table, where we are a year after the March, and media literacy.

Convention registration is open now. Register early to attend! Be sure to indicate your selections for

workshops on the registration form. Remember to also sign up for the tours to the famous Corning Glass

Museum on Friday afternoon and the Rockwell art Museum on Sunday afternoon.

Come to the convention and be inspired by the speakers and workshops, share with other AAUW branch

members, and take back new ideas to your branches! Also, remember to submit your applications for

Emerging Leader and Century-21 Program Awards by February 15.

Kimberly Churches

We are very excited to welcome Kimberly Churches, AAUW CEO to our convention.

Please take this opportunity to attend the convention and meet our outstanding new

leader.

Kimberly Churches took over as AAUW CEO on June 1, 2017. Since her arrival, she has

been on a listening tour of AAUW across the country, which included a stop in New York

to talk to us at AAUW-NYS. She thinks on a large scale about AAUW’s future, asking us to

imagine training 10 million people with Start Smart and Work Smart, or becoming the

leading international organization on pay equity. Under her leadership, AAUW is

embarking on an ambitious strategic planning process aimed at solidifying AAUW’s

position as a global leader on equity.

Prior to coming to AAUW, Kim Churches was the Managing Director at Brookings Institution, where she provided

strategic guidance, vision, problem-solving skills, expansive partnerships and fundraising.

We are delighted that Kim Churches will be speaking to us at the Convention about her vision for AAUW, the

strategic plan, and how we can sharpen our focus and impact.

AAUW FUNDS BASKETS/PURSES FUNDRAISER

GUIDELINES This fundraiser has become a fun tradition at the convention, providing a social venue, friendly competition, and an opportunity to raise funds to further AAUW’s Mission of promoting equity for women and girls. Baskets, purses and other items will be auctioned or raffled. A branch may submit up to three things which it decides whether to auction or raffle. Your branch can also choose to which of the AAUW Funds it wishes to donate the money raised at this event. The rules to participate are simple:

Each branch can enter up to 3 items (purse, basket, or something else). Prior information is necessary for entry: how many items to be entered, whether they are a basket, purse

or something else, their titles, if they will be auctioned or raffled and to which Fund the money raised should go. Information should be sent to Nancy Mion by the deadline: FRIDAY MARCH 30, 2018.

A 4”x6” card should be attached to each item giving the title, a brief description, the contents if any, the name of the contributing branch, and whether the item will be raffled or auctioned.

All items must be in the Baskets/Purses Display Room by 5 PM Friday, April 20, 2018. Drawing tickets for raffled items will be available at a cost of $10 for 2 tickets. The minimum starting bid for an auctioned item will be $20, with minimum increments of $5. The winners of auctioned items will pay at pickup time. The money made by each item will be credited to the branch that contributed the item. The winners will pick up their items during Sunday breakfast, April 22, 2018. BRANCH EXHIBIT AREA – Deadline April 6, 2018

Displays in the Branch Exhibit Area at the AAUW-NYS Convention are a popular way for each branch to share accomplishments, ideas and wares with other branches. The Branch Exhibit Area is a place for members to meet people from other parts of the state and enjoy a spirit of camaraderie as they share information and ideas. The guidelines are few and the rewards are many.

This year we encourage each branch to reserve a half table for displays, handouts and sale items. Keep in mind that the Branch Exhibit Area is unsecured. Display posters should be free-standing or on a storyboard.

DETAILS: 1. Each branch should set up its exhibit and sales between 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm on Friday, April 20. Do not display items before 12:00 noon when the area is officially opened and branch areas have been designated. 2. The branch is required to have one or more of its members stay with the exhibit during the official hours the Branch Exhibit

Area is open if items are for sale or at any time items of value are displayed at the table. 3. Exhibits will be on display all of the time. 4. 2018 AAUW-NYS Emerging Leader Award Application AAUW provides a platform for developing leaders. The 2018 AAUW-NYS Emerging Leader Award will recognize one AAUW member from each branch who demonstrates leadership potential through her enthusiasm, creative ideas and commitment to AAUW’s mission. The honoree can be a member who now assumes a leadership position in your branch or a new member who has demonstrated leadership by assuming a role within the branch.
