MeSSAge FROM THe PReSIDenT

On behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), it is my great pleasure to invite you to attend the Liver meeting® 2012 — AASLD’s 63rd Annual meeting — to be held

november 9–13 in Boston. This vibrant city is renowned for its cultural facilities and world-class educational institutions, as well as its place at the forefront of American history. While in Boston, you will network with colleagues, exchange the latest trends and best practices, and discuss treatment outcomes with the best and brightest in the field of hepatology.

each year, AASLD develops a comprehensive, yet customizable, program firmly rooted in the most cutting-edge scientific research and the most current recommendations in the practice of hepatology, and this year is no different.

Our Postgraduate course, Personalized Medicine and the Practice of Hepatology, will introduce important advances in the genetic and molecular understanding of liver diseases and their translation into the clinical arena. State-of-the-Art Lectures will address exciting topics such as the role of normal constituents of the intestinal microbiota in disease, controversies in transplant for Hcc, current management of alcoholic hepatitis, and the role of mitochondria in drug-induced liver injury. The President’s choice lecture will focus on the history and progress in the treatment of hepatitis B since 1982 through the eyes of someone involved in this progress.

AASLD also continues to collaborate with the centers for Disease control and Prevention (cDc), the national Institutes of Health (nIH), the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS), the American Society for gastrointestinal endoscopy (ASge), and the north American Society for Pediatric gastroenterology, Hepatology and nutrition (nASPgHAn) on a wide range of specialized and cross-disciplinary programming at this year’s meeting.

All in all, it is an extremely diverse program. Whether you are a researcher, educator, practicing clinician, mid-level provider, or in training, we are confident you will find the sessions that are most relevant to you, your patients, and your research.

We look forward to seeing you this fall.

Sincerely,

guadalupe garcia-tsao, mD AASLD President

Course Descriptions (continued)

clinical research workshopClinical epidemiology in Hepatology

friDAY, November 9: 12:00 – 3:30 Pm

courSe DirectorS: W. ray Kim, MD and James e. everhart, MD

The clinical Research Workshop is an educational event for clinical researchers in their early career (e.g., fellows/residents in training and junior faculty). The workshop will consist of a number of didactic talks on epidemiological study design and analyses followed by small group breakout sessions. In the breakout sessions, a faculty member will moderate and critique presentations by selected participants.

Postgraduate course Personalized medicine and the Practice of Hepatology

friDAY, November 9: 3:30 – 7:40 Pm SAturDAY, November 10: 8:00 Am – 5:00 Pm

courSe DirectorS: J. Gregory fitz, MD and andrew P. feranchak, MD

The purpose of this course is to introduce important advances in the genetic and molecular understanding of liver diseases into the clinical arena. The program will emphasize new findings that relate directly to understanding the mechanisms of liver injury and approaches to clinical management. There has been substantial progress in the science of hepatology that relates directly to common liver diseases, including cholestasis, viral hepatitis, nASH and the progression of fibrosis toward cirrhosis. Further, these insights have helped to direct newer therapeutic approaches to the treatment of these disorders and as well as management of the complications of cirrhosis. Based on these considerations, a series of expert lectures and case-related discussions will be utilized to address both common and complex issues in hepatology; and to ascertain progress toward personalized medical management based on risk. The educational emphasis will be placed on the evolving insights into the pathogenesis of liver injuries, and how these insights influence prevention and management now and in the future.

thomas e. Starzl transplant Surgery State-of-the-Art Lecture Controversies in transplant for HCCSuNDAY, November 11: 9:30 – 10:00 Am

PreSeNter: elizabeth Pomfret MD, PhD

Hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc) occurs most commonly among people with cirrhosis and those suffering from viral hepatitis with or without cirrhosis. With the prevalence of hepatitis c and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (nASH) increasing in the united States, it is expected that Hcc will remain problematic for the foreseeable future. Hcc may be successfully treated with surgical resection in a small percentage of patients however the tumor frequently presents with large or multifocal lesions or in a background of severe underlying cirrhosis precluding curative resection. This lecture will focus on the treatment options for Hcc with particular focus on the role of liver transplantation and the controversies that are associated with transplantation for Hcc. The current Hcc allocation policy does not adhere to the general principles for liver allocation adopted with the introduction of the MeLD score. namely, the current Hcc prioritization rules are categorical, purely waiting time based, are not based on any tumor biology variables, and do not take into account the degree of underlying liver disease. Prioritization and allocation proposals currently being considered by the OPTn/unOS Liver and Intestinal committee will be discussed along with post-transplant outcomes for patients with Hcc.

Hans Popper basic Science State-of-the-Art Lectureinflammatory Control in Health and diseaseSuNDAY, November 11: 12:00 – 12:30 Pm

PreSeNter: ruslan M. Medzhitov, PhD

Inflammatory control mechanisms will be discussed from a general biological perspective. A focus of discussion will be on the mechanisms underlying the potential of the inflammatory response to cause disease of homeostasis.

Perhaps Boston can be best described as a welcome contradiction: Hip alongside historic. Skyscrapers surround parks. gourmet meets pizza. Just as the city pays homage

to every period of America’s timeline, it also serves as all things to all people. Boston is a wonderful blend of stylish sophistication and historic new england charm. You can easily uncover the city’s past while enjoying its distinctively modern edge.

Boston is at its most beautiful in the fall. As the leaves turn, Boston’s parks put on an unforgettable show, complementing the historic architecture. A walk along the city’s Freedom Trail now doubles as a foliage tour. It’s a great time to visit Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace, as the crowds thin out, but the weather is still pleasant.
