Legacy plates are being sustained through DLA Troop Support contracts.

Vital Torso Protection is four variants:- Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert (ESAPI)- Enhanced Side Ballistic Inserts (ESBI)- X Threat Small Arms Protective Inserts (XSAPI)- X Threat Side Ballistic Insert (XSBI)

Vital Torso Protection (VTP) – Soldier Protective System (SPS) is in Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP).

Full Rate Production (FRP) for the torso plates and the side plates – solicitation scheduled for release in 1QFY17.

VTP solicitation will require VTP plates to meet or exceed weight reduction percentages achievedduring LRIP.

VTP Product Description is currently on Fed Bizz Ops for Industry Feedback.

Future Requirements for theIndustrial Base

Focus research and development efforts on new materials that yieldlighter plates and maintain a high level of ballistic performance.

Female Specific Body Armor Solutions.

The Program Office is working on modifying the hard armor ballisticand non-ballistic standards based on current analysis of operationaldata.

Description / Capabilities:NGABS will be a modular, scalable, and mission tailorable system providing significantly increased capabilities at a reduced weight. The system will provide Soldiers with the ability to scale the level of protection and tailor the suit for each specific mission. The system will add significant protection with new materials and a robust cooling system while realizing an overall weight savings. NGABS will also bring the ability for EOD Technicians to operate in low light level conditions with a Modular Sensor and Display. Finally the program will offer substantially improved form and fit with increased sizing.

Capability Improvements over the Legacy System: Modular, Scalable, and Mission Tailorable System 10% Weight Reduction (T) Fragmentation, Blast, Impact, Flame, and Ballistic Protection Low Light Level/Night Ops Modular cooling system

Legacy System: ABS Gen II

JCIDs Status: CDD in staffing.
