The Flower Arranging Study Group of The Garden Club of America February 2014 Tips Spring is Coming Around Again, March 20 th Fast and simple flower arrangement ideas, Easy as 1-2-3 Tools Clippers or Jack Knife Supplies 12” Shallow Round Clear Glass Vase Floral Foam Toothpicks Plant Materials Deer Moss Foliage Leaves Dried Sponge Mushrooms Fresh Mushrooms Curly Willow Branches Blue Iris Green Fuji Chrysanthemums Hyacinths Mini Daffodils Definition: Parallel Design a design in which plant material (and other components if not prohibit- ed) are placed in strongly parallel groupings with open space between; may be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. Additional components may be placed at any angle at the base as connectives. Multiple containers may be used, but design must appear as a single unit. Technique • Cut floral foam into glass dish and fill the edge with Deer Moss. (Pic 1) • Cover the floral foam with various greens and add dried sponge mushrooms off the sides. (Pic 2) • Place Curly Willow into 3 or 4 equidistant locations into the floral foam. Follow with the tallest stems of Iris and add additional shorter stems keeping stems straight and in parallel groupings to each other. • Add Hyacinths and Mini Daffodils using the same principles as the Iris. • Trim the stems of the Fuji Mums to about 2” and place low in the design so that they resemble low growth of spring grasses. • Lastly take the fresh supermarket mushrooms and push a toothpick into the base of the mushroom. Place the other protruding end of the toothpick into the floral foam. The toothpick can be picked directly through flat foliage leaves for a natural look.
