Amendment- An addition to a formal document such as the constitution.

Annex- A add to a territory to one’s own territory.

Article- A part of a Document Such as the Constitution, that deals with a single subject.

Boycott- to refuse to o buy items from a particular country.

Burgesses- elected representatives to an assembly.

Canal- an artificial waterway.

Cash Crop- farm crop raised to be sold for money.

Cotton Grin- a machine that removed seeds from cotton fiber.

Debtor- Person or country that Owens money.

Dictator- a leader who rules with total authority, often in a cruel or brutal manner.

Diversity- variety of difference.

EElectoral college- a special group of voters to vote for the president and vice president.

Emancipate- to free slavery.

Export- to sell goods aboard.

FFederalism- the sharing power between federal state government.

Federalist- supporters of the constitution.

Frigate- war ship.

GGlobal warming- a steady increase in average world temperature.

Guerrilla Tactics- referring to surprise attack or raids than organized warfare.

Guerrilla Warfare- a hit-run technique used in fighting a war, fighting by small bands or warriors using tactics such as sudden ambushes

HHolocaust- the name given to the mass slaughter of Jews, and other groups by the naxis during world war 2.

Horizontal integration- combing of competing firms into one corporation.

Human rights- regarded as belonging to all persons, such as freedom from unlawful imprisonment

IImport- to buy goods from foreign markets.

Impressments- forcing people into service, as in the navy.

Industrial revolution- the change from an agrarian society which began in great Britain and spread to the untied states around 1800.

JJoint-stock company- a company in which investors buy stock in the company in return for a share of it’s future profits.

Judicial branch- the branch of government including the federal court system, that interprets the nation’s laws.

Judicial review- the right of supreme court to determine if a law violates the constitution.

Kentucky- civil war.

Henry Knox- Secretary of war.

Landslide- an overwhelming victory.

Literacy- the ability to read and write.

Loyalist- American colonist who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence.

MManifest Destiny- the idea popular the untied states during the popular the 1800s that country must expand it’s boundaries to the pacific

Mayflower compact- a formal document written in the 1920 that provided law and order to the Plymouth colony.

Mercantilism- the theory that a states or nation’s power depended on it’s wealth.

NNational debt- the amount of money a national government has or its people.

Natural- taking no side in a conflict.

Nullify- to cancel or make ineffective.

Offensive- position of attacking or the attack its self.

Ordinance- a law or regulation.

Ozone- the layer of gas composed of a form of oxygen that protects the earth and its people from cancer causing sun rays.

PPatent- a document that gives an inventor the sole legal right to an invention for a period of time.

Plurality-largest single share.

Proportional- to be the same as or corresponding to.

RRatify- to give official approval to.

Revenue- incoming money.

Royal colony- colony run by a governor and council appointed by the king or queen.

Segregation- the separation or isolation of a race, class or group.

Saratoga- turning point.

Tariff- a tax on imports or exports.

Temperance- the use of little or no alcoholic drink.

Triangular trade– a trade route that exchanged goods between the west indies, the American colonies , and west Africa.

Unalienable right- a right that cannot be surrendered.

Unconstitutional- not agreeing or consistent with the constitution.

Underground railroad- a system that helped enslaved African Americans follow a network of escape routes out of the south to freedom in the north.

VVeto- to reject a bill and prevent it from becoming a law.

Vigilantes- people who take law into there own hands.

Vaquero- Hispanic ranch hand.

War of 1812- fought between U.S. and Britain Navy and kept land.
