Hello and welcome to the second edition of Amber Valley Voice. Thank you for all the won-
derful feedback that we have received and hopefully by making the improvement s that you
suggested, we will continue to make each edition of your magazine better than the last.
This edition highlights the Spookyshire Festival, organised
by the Peak District and Derbyshire Tourist Board. This fea-
tures a number of spooktacular events throughout the county,
see Page 4 for more details. Also, if you have ever wondered
about the origins of Halloween, why not take a look at our
article on Page 16/17.
Of course, we must remember, remember the 5th of November and to see some events to
attend, see Page 22.
We have also continued to highlight the Derbyshire County Councils
Trusted Trader Scheme, accompanied by local Trusted Trader Compa-
nies who can help us all make those long awaited improvements to our
homes and gardens.
Other things to look out for include the recipe for Partridge Risotto on Page 14, which fea-
tures the meat of the month, Partridge, which can be purchased from Owen Taylor Butchers.
However, if you don’t feel like cooking, why not order a delicious takeaway from Wok This
Way, we did and you can read our review on Page 7.
Don’t forget to visit Serenity Therapy to take full
advantage of the discount available exclusively to
Amber Valley Voice readers, a perfect treat before
the Christmas rush!
Finally, if the winter weather is starting to get you
down, why not book a break on
www.holidayhawk.co.uk on pages 20/21 and prior
to getting into that bikini, get a couple of work
outs booked in at Fizzio-Fit on page 5.
In the meantime if there is something else hap-
pening in the area which you think should feature
in the next magazine, please drop me a line.
Until next month, happy reading!

Editors Choice This month I have enjoyed such a special treat, I couldn’t wait to tell every-one about it! I have never tried reflexology before and I have never been particularly keen on having my feet touched. However, the second I walked into Serenity Therapy and met Dawn Barker, I felt instantly at ease. Dawn works from home and has a really professional treatment room that is in-stantly calming to walk into. I hopped on the treatment bed and Dawn gen-tly massaged and relaxed my feet (and me)! As she began the reflexology treatment, she explained how she works the reflex points on my feet to de-tect imbalances in energy zones and how every part of my foot was related to a part of the body and although every experience can be different, Dawn was able to pinpoint every problem, ache, concern in my body simply by massaging the relevant part of my foot. I couldn’t believe how accurate she was!! When the treatment had finished, I felt like I was walking on air and when Dawn followed up the treatment with a courtesy call the next day, which she does for all her clients, I told her how good I felt and that every-thing we had discussed had either felt much better or had been correctly identified. I will definitely be going back and I can’t recommend Dawn highly enough!

Gillian Woolly-Swift makes a welcome return to
Leabrooks Gallery at the beginning of October;
she will be exhibiting a completely new range of
work which, none the less, pays tribute to a
range of familiar subjects. Her canvases, on
which she uses chiefly acrylic, demonstrate her
technical accomplishment, her keen sense of
mood and colour and her appreciation of natural
forms. Collectors and those new to her work will
find much to admire in this important new exhi-
bition!
Look out too for the work of wood sculptor,
Royston Crisp, and weekend demonstrations by
popular jeweller, Jo Walters, who works with
semi-precious stones.
As always, there is plenty to see here: sculpture,
pottery, cards and jewellery as well as paintings.
is fast approaching!

Kate Atkinson, author of Case Histories, is probably best known for When Will There Be Good News – a Richard and Judy Best Read of the Year – and her first novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, which won her the Whitbread Book of the Year prize. With that kind of pedigree, it’s a fair bet that you’re in for a good read, but with Case Histories, you also get an unusual, exuberant, often moving and sometimes laugh-out-loud experience. The story focuses around a series of three mysteries – the case histories of the title - which are being investigated by off-beat private detec-tive Jackson Brodie, a man whose life is gently falling apart around him. As he starts to unravel the cases he real-ises that their apparent randomness hold strange and dark connections and entanglements which draw the reader deeper and deeper. This may sound like a detective novel; but it’s far more complex. The charac-ters and plot have real depth, life and emotion. It’s got more twists and shocks than an “ordinary” novel, it’s intelligent and gripping and the au-thor’s wicked sense of humour beautifully skewers some of life’s absurdities.
According to famous American thriller-writer Stephen King this is
“Not just the best novel I read this year, but the best mystery of
the decade.” – Is he right? The only way to find out is to read it for
yourself....
