1st July 2020 Years 2&3 Amazing Australia!
Each week we will put together some suggestions of activities that cover a range of subjects includ-ing: science, history, geography, PE, PSHE, Eng-lish, art, DT, music or computing based around
the topic. If you have any questions or would like to share anything with us then please contact one
of the team on [email protected]. Also, don’t forget to log on to Mathletics and
complete your maths tasks too! PE: Let’s Get Moving!
Animal Workout First, have a look at the Year 2&3 Animal Workout resource on the
website. Next, set a timer and com-plete each ani-mal movement for 45 seconds, with 15 seconds rest in between. Do as many as you can in the
45 seconds!
Australian Animal Art Today your art challenge is to create a collage of one of Australia’s
amazing animals. Have a look at the science challenge on the next page before your decide which animal you will use for your artwork. You
might like to collage the animal that you have carried out your research about or a completely different one! Have a look at page 3 where we
have made some templates for you to give you some ideas.
Remember to think about these things before you start creating! Sketch an outline of your chosen animal (or use a template) What materials do you have to use? (Magazines, newspaper, coloured
paper, glue) Which colours do you need to use? How big will your artwork be?
Check out our Celebrating Home Learning Section on the website for super learning! https://www.pirbrightvillageprimaryschool.com/celebrating-home-learning/
We enjoy seeing all your lovely learning so remember to email us for feedback!
Australia’s
Amazing
Animals!
Science - Australian Animals
There are so many interesting animals in Australia! Four out of five animals that live in Australia are endemic,
that means that they can only be found there.
Among the animal species that can only be found in Aus-tralia are the platypus and two species of echidna that are
the world's only egg-laying mammals, so called monot-remes. Australia has almost 400 mammal species and
about 140 species of marsupials. Marsupials are animals that carry their young in their pouches.
Half of the birds that live in Australia, can only be found there. Among the typical Australian bird species are the kookaburras, the emu and the rainbow lorikeet, an espe-cially colourful parrot which has a red beak and a vivid,
multicoloured plumage.
Your challenge today is to choose one of Australia’s amaz-ing endemic animals and carry out some research about it. Make some short notes to help you with your English task!
Here are some research questions to get you started: What does your animal look like? What size is it? (Appearance) What does it like to eat? (Diet) Where does it live? (Habitat) What is its young called? How long does it live for? (Lifespan) Is it endangered? What other interesting facts can you find?
When you are carrying out your research make sure you follow the school’s e-safety rules and search ‘...for kids’ so
it is a safe search.
English - Zoo Information Sign Once you have finished your science challenge and researched one
of Australia’s endemic animals your next task is to produce an information sign that could be put up in a zoo, telling visitors about your amazing animal that is only found in Australia.
There is no set format for what the signs should look like, but they should definitely include a picture and information about the animal’s size, lifespan, habitat, diet and how endangered they are.
Have a look at the examples of what a zoo information sign look like below. Remember to make it informative, quick to read and
eye-catching! You might like to research other animals from the list and make a
few more information signs or set up your own zoo!
