I am writing in response to our recent phone call regarding applicants for work placements at Divus UK.

I am currently studying BA (Hons) Digital Photography, I am extremely interested in art, photography, self-publishing and learning new visual concepts behind the publishing industry. With my background in art and photography, I am confident that I would be able to offer a very dedicated, creative and punctual manner of assistance. It is a personal ambition to work within the industry, therefore I am extremely dedicated towards learning, and experiencing first hand interaction with an established publishing house.

My education in photography has allowed me to learn and develop my ability not only as a photographer, but also enabled me to gain strong Photoshop skills. I have also had the opportunity of self publishing my own photo-book, based on East London’s street fashion. However I wish to invest a lot more of my time in developing work experience within many different fields in the industry

I am extremely enthusiastic and very passionate about becoming involved within the arts and publishing industry itself. The prospect of a work placement with Divus Uk, would give me the perfect opportunity to excel my experience in a creative publishing industry.

The concept behind my work placement is to develop skills and an understanding of the process behind curating a gallery exhibition, and its instillation, and also the production of promoting a gallery exhibition. I will be working alongside the curator and documenting my experience. As noted under the Artist Placement Group I will become involved within the day-to-day organisation and management of an art gallery, and my placement will allow me to produce my own personal artist report. APG sought to reframe the traditional patronage relationship, aiming to integrate artists into a participatory role in business matters and decision-making at their host organizations. Being on my placement I will be included within certain decision-making and also be able to play a vital role when promoting and installing the gallery exhibition.

My personal project will consist of documenting a gallery installation. I will be working alongside the curator of the exhibition, and also the artists featuring their work, in order to record the production behind installing a new exhibition. I will also document the exhibition launch night itself. These images will be used on the companies website, and such web 2.0 applications like their personal blog sites for promotional purposes.

My personal project outline – Firstly I will begin my project by promoting the gallery exhibition Underground City, by contacting independent press release houses to feature the exhibition within their listings and distributing flyers. Secondly I will start to record the process of installing the exhibition itself in our gallery space.

I have chosen to document this using my slr camera and also my mobile phone, as images will be featured online and other web 2.0 applications such as bloging sites I feel the combination of different types of images will create a more personal approach towards me being involved directly with the exhibition. I will take photos of all the work featured within the exhibition itself and also different stages of the installation, and finally images of the opening night.

I am going to be documenting my work placement through the use of web 2.0 applications like twitter and also bloging websites such as Myspace. This will let me personally reflect on my progress throughout my time spent with Divus. Also this will allow me to interact with other web 2.0 users, which will enable me to structure my production effectively. I will be using twitter on a regular basis to detail my daily encounters and what tasks I will be doing, also to upload any images taken throughout the day and images I take during the process of documenting my personal project. By using such applications as Twitter and Myspace we are able to engage with the interaction of outside viewers.

Firstly I began by adapting my previous curriculum vita however I was unfortunate in successfully obtaining a work placement therefore I was able to establish a more creative curriculum vita that directly focuses on targeting specific jobs, and illustrated my own personal skills and experiences within the industry. I have also been able to generate many different cover letters to personally target a distinctive job role. I finally created an electronic portfolio to attach alongside my C.V and C.L that was easily accessible and downloadable. I feel after adapting my C.V to be more specific and accurate towards the types of jobs I wanted to apply for gave me a stronger chance in succeeding and got me my work placement, and also further work experience and interviews.

In relation towards the use of social media within my work placement, I chose to use Twitter. The reason being was as I felt it was the easiest, most efficient and reliable web 2.0 device available. Twitter not only allowed me to directly update what I was doing on a regular basis but also gave me the opportunity to interact with others, and develop my skills within a professional network. In a recent study Professors experiment with Twitter as teaching tool. Perez, E. The Journal Sentinel (Apr. 26, 2009)

One of the strengths behind using Twitter allowed me to directly interact with my tutor and not only be updated with her posts but she was also able to monitor and interact with my own posts. As the report by Perez stated that – ‘Twitter also allows faculty members to post links to what they’re reading. Students who “follow” a professor’s tweets can get a look at the news stories that help inform their professor’s lectures or connect with the experts their teachers are following.’ – ‘Twitter has increased the amount of communication she has with students. She gets direct messages from students about the industry or the course. She also “listens” to the conversations students have with each other on Twitter to gauge what they’re interested in or what questions they have.’

Also using such a well-known web 2.0 application allowed me to promote Divus, Underground City exhibition. Which emphasises the notion of how the internet and such social media sites as Twitter act as a direct link for promotion and interaction between companies and their followers. – ‘The Internet in general has changed the practice of public relations, allowing companies or brands to communicate directly with consumers and, in some cases, bypass the media.’
