‘Thank you for 2013!’This is how you have made a difference to our lives.

We trained in skills such as computers, retail, cell-phone repairing, masonry, tailoring and electrical work, between December 2012 and November 2013.

We now work with organizations such as Oxfam, Aegeis, Namdhari Seeds, Tata Docomo, Adecco, MORE, KFC and Café Coffee Day.

We earn $117 (Rs 7,275) in a month on an average.

That puts our combined annual income at $1.8 million (Rs 111 million).

We have a chance at a better life – for us and our families.

We can dream bigger now.

We are the skilled 1,303.

Double or nothing! With her new job, Nagarathna has more than doubled her family income!

“My father has a grocery store with which he supports us. He makes $89 (Rs 5,000)

in a month. But now that I am earning too, things have become easier at home,”

she says. Nagarathna, 22, lives in Bangalore with her parents and her older brother

who is in college.

Nagarathna is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts, but without any knowledge of

computers, she could not find a job that paid well.

She enrolled for a basic course in computers at the HOPE foundation center in

Bangalore. “I could afford the fees here. Learning computers really helped me.”

After her training, Nagarathna responded to a job opening for a data entry

operator at Aon Global India, an insurance and human capital consulting

company, in Bangalore. She got the job! She earns $127 (Rs 7,200) a month.

“I cannot be happier. My job means a better life for all of us,” says Nagarathna, 22.

The skill route to his dream“I want to become a doctor and help the poor,” says 19-year-old Shankar

Aacharya. At night, Shankar studies hard for the Pre-Medical Test (PMT). By

day, he works as a computer operator at ITO in Delhi.

Shankar and his family – his mother and three siblings – live in the Village

of HOPE in Tahirpur, Delhi. The Village of HOPE provides shelter, care and

livelihoods for over 4,000 people with leprosy. It has a vocational training

center for computers, spoken English and tailoring. Shankar’s father died

from leprosy when Shankar was six.

“After our father’s death, my elder brother quit school after the 10th standard

and trained as a draftsman at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI). He got a

job at a private firm afterwards. I wanted to help him out so I decided to take

a job too after finishing school. This way I could also save up for medical

school.” While looking for jobs, Shankar realized that he needed to know

how to use computers.

“I knew about the HOPE foundation computer center, so I joined there for

a basic course in computers. I also learned English and life skills. Now my

younger brother and sister too learn computers there,” says Shankar.

Shankar earns $148 (Rs 8,000) a month. “I wouldn’t have got this job if I

hadn’t learned computers. It gets hectic, studying and working, but I will

eventually become a doctor,” he says.

“I can now finally work and save up for medical school,” says Shankar, 19.

In 2014, the ‘Making India Employable’ program will work to

opens new doors of opportunities for 1,000 more young people

in Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Nagapattinam and at our newest

vocational training center in Uttarakhand started in the aftermath of

the June 2013 flood disaster.

We will train young people and women from urban slums and

villages, in skills that make them employable. The students will also

learn life skills, and each one of them will be mentored by their

respective trainers. Upon completion of the course, we will help

them make résumés and find jobs best suited to them. We will

also organize job placements and internships. We have over 40

programs across eight cities in India which train close to 18,000

people every year.

A thousandmore dreams in 2014

‘WE GOT IT!’: In October, we organised a job fair in Bangalore for 1,000 young

people who trained with us in various skills. By the end of the day, 307 youngsters were hired by organisations such as Oxfam,

Honda Needs, Eureka Forbes, Tata Trends and Coffee Day.
