level, and position larger or bulkier items on lower

shelves or on the floor.

• Add some flair with “syncopation.” Put

small twists and turns in stacked products, lean

some items against others, and add an element.

Mix it upA garden center is not a library, and shelves

and benches don’t need to line the walls to ef-

fectively sell products. Here are some structural

tips to add some pizzazz to any display:

• Pull fixtures away from the walls and group

them together. Mixing shelves and benches of vary-

ing heights and sizes can create visual interest.

• Shelving with finished backs is ideal for

merchandising in the middle of a store. You can

place product on the shelves in front, and also

place a bench and other visual items against

the back to create a separate display that cross-

merchandises complimentary products.

• Nesting fixtures create opportunities for mer-

chandisers to be creative and work literally outside

the box to create a vertical display that isn’t rect-

angular. Gondolas and pegboards keeps products at

eye level and further enhances visual interest.

The Eyes Have ItThe most powerful product position in the

store is at eye level. Shop-

pers are less likely

to stretch, squat

or otherwise exert

effort to get products

from fixtures.

Height is a valuable

merchandising tool,

and racks and shelves

that can position prod-

ucts in shoppers’ sight

lines are necessary for

success. The optimum

eye-level buying height

is roughly 5 ft. 3 in.

Consumers

also tend to scan

merchandise as they

would read – from left

to right. Place items

you want noticed the

most vertically, at eye

and hand level and to

the left of shelves

and fixtures.

Backgrounds and Backdrops work to

showcase what’s in

front of them and hide

what should not be

seen behind them.

The purpose of a backdrop is to stop a

person’s eye from overlooking. “You want to

be able to guide or limit the eye and be able

to focus on the foreground,” says Scott Daly,

visual merchandising manager with Homestead

Gardens. Consider using tri-fold screens, shelving

units and other fixtures in displays.

• Backdrops can be

made from a perma-

nent or temporary wall,

fabric, POP, plant mate-

rial and more.

• They can be used

to distract from “full-

time eye sores” in the

store, such as unattract-

ive areas or work areas,

says Scott.

• Texture is great

for backgrounds if used

sparingly.

Rule of ThreeUse three items. Start

with one larger piece for

a backdrop, one unusual

item for a container and

one piece that is purely surprising and in-

teresting. Limiting the number of items to three

can help ensure a display doesn’t get too busy.

Ultimately, however, the space should dictate

how many items are necessary, says Scott.

“When you look at a display, you are

either looking at it as an island or you

are viewing it as a wall,” he says. “If you

are looking at it as a wall, that’s when we

need a backdrop. If you are looking at is

like an island, do you need a backdrop?”

Mixing in PlantsWhen it comes to seasonal plants,

consumers may be more motivated to

purchase them if retailers provide tips

and hints for how to mix them in with dif-

ferent non-plant items. Seasonal plants, such as

poinsettias, are best displayed in combination

with everyday items, as well as other seasonal

items, says Rochelle Zimmerman, showroom

and display designer at Otter Creek Wreath

Less is More…It’s important not

to make a display

too busy when cross-

merchandising plants,

says Renae Bobbett at

Beaver Bark Gift and

Garden Center. She

recommends retail-

ers start with a focal

point of interest and

work their way out

from there.

Indeed, retailers

shouldn’t have too many

ideas in one display but instead

should focus on a main theme, such as col-

or, texture or a particular plant, says Nancy

Proman, director of independent retail services

at the Dynamic Experiences Group LLC, a retail

consulting firm. “Simple displays without clutter

will give a clear message to customers, helping

them to understand the point of the display.

years, we realize it’s important

to not only offer distinctive

garden products to retailers, but

to present solutions to display-

ing these products, as well.

Location, Location, Location needs to be

top of mind for garden

retail. Here are some

questions to ask as you choose

the best spot for your display:

• What type of products will you display?

• Will shoppers see the products easily as

they walk by?

• Is the space large enough to display the

products without overcrowding? Or is the space

too large for the products you’ll be showcasing?

• Can the display be placed so that it bridges

two similar product categories, allowing for

smart cross-merchandising possibilities?

The area between the annuals and bedding

plants and the garden center at Dees Nursery in

Oceanside, New York is a pivotal transition point.

“It has a lot of traffic from one department

to the other,” says co-owner Joe

DiDominica. “It’s literally in be-

tween everything. You have to walk

through the display from bedding

plants to house plants,” he says.

This helps make it an ideal spot for

a seasonal display that mixes differ-

ent products, containers and plants.

The goal of a new merchandised

display in this space is to give shop-

pers ideas, says Joe. “We’re trying

to be softer with the displays, give

people ideas—not just toss things

on gondola units and expect

customers to know what

to do with them. “We are

trying to make the area a little

bit nicer and more idea-orient-

ed,” says Joe.

Fixin’ on FixturesOnce the location

is finalized, you’ll

need to find the

right fixture for

the space. The

style of the

fixture should

match the style

of the store and

that of the prod-

ucts it will hold.

For example, use

rustic furnishings for terra cotta and perhaps a

sleeker look and feel for modern or urban-type

pottery and products.

Also – use fixtures that are sturdy and are

the appropriate size for the products they will

display. Try not to “overstuff” displays to help

save on restocking. The fixture and the items it

holds should be well proportioned.

Selling This and ThatThe right fixtures in the right location can

help you sell more than one product category if

done correctly. Here are some tips for effective

cross merchandising:

• Each product must be relevant

to the other and make sense in

combination.

• Maintain a similar style

with the product mix.

• Include multiples of

each product, but

don’t overfill.

• Use mul-

tiple fixtures

of similar

style to cre-

ate varying

levels of height

and depth.

• Use height in

the center or rear of

display, place mid-

sized products at shelf
