Jared Becoming HumanIt all begins by 1998 with his brother a new revolution of rock, an exclusive interview

and more - the Echelon has arrived By Steve Jacobs

It all stars on December 26th, 1971. Is an American actor, director, pro-ducer, musician, and occasional

model. Leto has appeared in both big budget Hollywood films and smaller projects from independent produc-ers and art houses. He rose to promi-nence for playing Jordan Catalanoin the teenage drama

My So-Called Life. He later made his film debut in How to Make an American Quilt and received first notable critical praise for his performance in Prefontaine.Leto played supporting roles in The Thin Red Line and Girl, In-terrupted, as well as the lead role in the horror film Urban Legend

and earned critical acclaim after por-traying heroin addict Harry Gold-farb in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream. He has worked with di-rector David Fincher in Fight Club and Panic Room. Since the 2000’s,Leto has been nominated for awards for his work in such films as American Psycho,

Highway, Lord of War, Lonely Hearts, Chapter 27, and Mr. Nobody.Leto is the lead vocalist, multi-instru-mentalist and main songwriter for 30 Seconds to Mars. He formed the rock band in 1998 in Los Angeles, Califor-nia, along with his older brother Shan-non Leto. Signed with Immortal and Virgin, 30 Seconds to Mars released their self-titled debut album in 2002 to positive reviews. The band’s follow-up album, A Beautiful Lie (2005), went platinum in several countries. This Is War, the band’s third album, arrived in December 2009. Leto has also direct-ed music videos, including the MTV Video Music Award nominated “The Kill” (2006), “Kings and Queens” (2009), and “Hurricane” (2010).Following Lonely Hearts, Leto starred in Jarrett Schaefer’s directorial debut Chapter 27, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. In the film, he playsMark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon. . Leto gained 67 pounds for the role. Gaining the weight, he said, was tougher than dieting himself into skeletal shape for his role as drug addict Harry Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream. The abrupt-ness of Leto’s weight gain gave him gout. He had to use a wheelchair due to the stress of the sudden increase in weight put on his body. After the shoot-ing of the film, Leto quickly went on a liquid diet. He explained, “I’ve been fasting ever since. I’ve been doing this very strange, like, lemon and cay-enne pepper and water fast. I didn’t eat any food for 10 days straight; I think I lost 20 pounds that first 10 days.”Losing the excess weight after Chapter 27 proved a challenge. “It took about a year to get back to a place that felt semi-normal,” he said; “I don’t know if I’ll ever be back to the place I was physically. I’d never do it again; it definitely gave me some problems.” The film received mixed to negative reviews, and was generally considered a disappointment. Leto’s performance, however, was well-received by critics; Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News wrote“

“Jared Leto gives such a grip-ping portrayal it’s equally hard to look away” and continued “Leto’s drawling, blotchy, creepy perfor-mance sets it apart,” while Rex Reed praised Leto saying “a gal-vanizing performance by an un-recognizable Jared Leto that can truly be called unforgettable.”During this period Leto focused in-creasingly on his band, turning down such films as Clint Eastwood’s World War II film Flags of Our Fathers.. On having to say no to East-wood, Leto explained:“That’s a dream come true when Clint Eastwood asks you to be in his film.I was devastated that I couldn’t

be a part of the film. But I had com-mitments; a record I had worked on for a couple of years was coming out. It was a very, very important time. It was a make or break time. It was one of those decisions that you make where you can see two paths and I think I made the right decision for myself. I’d love to work with Clint Eastwood in the future; he’s one of my heroes.” He was also chosen by Joby Harold to play Clayton Beresford in 2007’s Awake. He later turned down the role due to scheduling conflicts with his band and was replaced by Hayden Christensen. In 2009, Leto returned to acting with Mr. Nobody.

Leto’s role as Nemo Nobody required him to play the character as far aged as 118. The film was mostly fund-ed through European financiers, and was given lim-ited release.[53] Variety’s Boyd Van Hoeij praised Leto, saying “The closest the film comes to having a gravita-tional center are in the scenes set in 2092. What makes them soar is not the imaginative staging of the future, but Leto’s performance.” Bruce Kirkland of Jam! de-scribed Leto’s acting as “marvelously full-blooded, brain-spinning, tour-de-force performance.” Leto was nominated for the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 66th Venice International Film Festival for his performance. In 2011, Leto narrated TT3D: Closer to the Edge, a documentary film about the TT, the world-famous an-nual motorcycle race that takes place on the Isle of Man. The film was well-received both critically and com-mercially. Grossing £1.14 million, it is the seventh big-gest documentary hit of all time in the United Kingdom. On his music career, Leto told Jacobs, “I’ve been creating music since when I was a child. It’s an inseparable part of my life. There have always been lots of people around me who love music, even in my childhood. . My brother began to play drums when he was only 5 years old.”. In 1998, Leto founded 30 Seconds to Marsalong with his old-er brother Shannon Leto. The band’s name, said Leto, “has little to do with space, the universe or anything like that.

It is a name that works on several different levels. Most importantly, it is a good representation of our sound. It’s a phrase that is lyrical, suggestive, cinematic, and filled with immediacy. It has some sense of otherness to it.” In 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars signed a contract with Immor-tal and Virgin. In 2001, guitarists Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler and bassist Matt Wachter joined the band. When 30 Seconds to Mars first started, Jared refused to let his name be used to promote the band. He wrote the major-ity of their songs. Before the album was released, Puddle of Mudd invited 30 Seconds to Mars to open a six-week tour for them in the spring of 2002. The band later em-barked on a North American tour to support Incubus.30 Seconds to Mars released the self-titled debut al-bum in 2002, produced by Bob Ezrin, Brian Virtue and the band itself. It received generally positive reviews, and was compared to Pink Floyd, Tool, and Brian Eno.The album debuted and peaked at number 107 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Heat-seekers. It produced two singles, “Capricorn (A Brand New Name)” and “Edge of the Earth”, which reached the top ten on the UK Rock Chart. The former also became a Mainstream Rock top 40 hit and reached number one on the Heatseekers Songs.Over the years, the album has sold more than two million copies worldwide.

“On the first record I created a world, then hid behind it,”

In 2003, Solon Bixler left the band due to issues primarily related to touring and was replaced by Tomo Miličević. 30 Seconds to Mars toured extensively opening concerts for bands such as Our Lady Peace, Sevendust, and Chev-elle, and took a slot on the 2003 Lollapalooza tour. It took three years to record A Beautiful Lie, with the bandmates traveling to four different continents to work with Leto on his film sets. A Beautiful Lie differs notably from the band’s self-titled debut album, both musically and lyrical-ly. Whereas the eponymous concept album’s lyrics focus on human struggle and astronomical themes, A Beautiful Lie’s lyrics are more personal and the music introduces intense screaming vocals and synth effects. . “On the first record I created a world, then hid behind it,” Leto said. “With A Beautiful Lie, it was time to take a more personal and less cerebral approach. Although this record is still full of conceptual elements and thematic ideas it is ultimate-ly much more wrapped around the heart than the head. It’s about brutal honesty, growth, change. It’s an incred-ibly intimate look into a life that is in the crossroads.A raw emotional journey. A story of life, love, death, pain

joy, and passion. Of what it is to be human. Released in 2005, A Beautiful Lie was the band’s mainstream break-through. It has since been certified platinum by the Re-cording Industry Association of America(RIAA), and has reached platinum and gold status in several countries, with a sales total of over 3.5 million. It was led by “At-tack” which was the most added track on alternative radio in its first week, becoming a Modern Rock top 30 hit. 30 Seconds to Mars began their first headlining tour, Forever Night Never Day, in March 2006. At the same time, the band released the album’s second single, “The Kill”, which enjoyed mainstream success; it set a record for the longest-running hit in the history of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks when it remained on the national airplay chart for more than 50 weeks, following its number three peak in 2006.Leto directed the music video for the single under the pseud-onym of Bartholomew Cubbins, a recurring character in the Dr. Seuss universe. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’sThe Shining, Leto said, “The idea of isolation, identity, and self discovery were all elements present in the song. I thought this light homage was a good starting point and it soon

soon grew to include many more elements outside of Kubrick’s original piece.”Nominated for two MTV Vid-eo Music Awards, the band won the MTV2 Award. The music video garnered a lot of recognition, including two MTV Australia Awards and a Chainsaw Award. In Octo-ber 2006, the band began their Welcome to the Universe Tour, sponsored by MTV2 and were supported by Head Automatica, The Receiving End of Sirens, Cobra Star-ship, Rock Kills Kid, and several other bands including Street Drum Corps. “A Beautiful Lie” was released as the album’s fourth single in some territories, including Portu-gal, where it reached number eight on the chart. The music video for the song, directed by Leto under the pseudonym of Angakok Panipaq, was the first one ever to be shot 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland. Proceeds from the video’s sales benefited the Natural Resources De-fense Council. “Shooting in Greenland was a dream come true and one of the most exciting adventures we’ve ever had as a band,” Leto said. “Although incredibly challeng-ing and at times it seemed just out of our reach, once we finally arrived the beauty and magnificence of the terrain, the wonderful culture of the people, and the amazing jour-ney itself were all inspiring beyond belief. Almost every-one has heard of global warming by now but for the people of Greenland it is a real and tangible problem of today, not an issue of tomorrow. This journey changed our lives.

“The music video received a largely positive response, winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video and the MTV Asia Award for Favorite Video. In 2008, Leto also remixed “The Only One” for The Cure’s extended play Hypnagogic States. The band had attempted to sign with a new label after the A Beautiful Lie Tour, prompt-ing Virgin to file a lawsuit for $30 million, claiming that the band had failed to produce three of the five records they were obligated to deliver under their 1999 contract with the now-defunct Immortal Records.Leto responded to some of the claims in the suit stating, “under Califor-nia law, where we live and signed our deal, one cannot be bound to a contract for more than seven years.” Leto described the band’s third album, This Is War, as a con-cept album, saying it was created in an “intense two-year period, where it felt like the whole world was falling apart and massive changes were going on.” In a bid to involve their fans for This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars held The Summit where they invited fans to provide backing vo-cals and percussion. At the first, in Los Angeles, people showed up from all over the world, so they repeated The Summit in eight countries and extended the event digitally. The band also invited fans to submit close-up shots of their faces in order to make 2,000 different individual covers for the album. 2011 was the year were the band fished 300 concerts worldwide winning a record Guinnes.

BONO Peaceful or SEXY!?A&M 10 May 3, 2012 May 3, 2012 A&M 11

Mmost commonly known by his stage name Bono (pronounced /ˈbɒnoʊ/ BON-oh), is an Irish singer, musician, and humani-tarian best known for being the main vocalist of the Dublin-based rock band U2. Bono was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, and at-tended Mount Temple Compre-hensive School where he met his future wife, Alison Stewart,

and the future members of U2. Bono writes almost all U2 lyrics, often using political, social, and religious themes.During their early years, Bono’s lyr-ics contributed to U2’s rebellious and spiritual tone. As the band matured, his lyrics became inspired more by person-al experiences shared with members of U2. Outside the band, he has col-laborated and recorded with numerous artists, sits on the board of Elevation Partners, and has refurbished and owns The Clarence Hotel in Dublin with The Edge.Bono is also widely known for his activism concerning Africa, for which he co-founded DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign and Product Red.He has organised and played in sev-eral benefit concerts and has met with influential politicians. Bono has been praised and criticised for his activism and involvement with U2.He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, was granted an honoraryknighthood by Queen Elizabeth II of the United King-dom, and was named as a Person of the Year by Time, among other awards and nominations. With wealth accumulat-ed from his musical career and outside investments, Bono ranks as the world’s richest entertainer. No poet—and Bono, the 51-year-old lead singer of the Irish rock band U2, considers him-self a poet—enjoys having his verse scrutinized. And no musician likes to have to explain what a song means. Nevertheless, for more than 20 years Bono’s fans have been attempting to gauge his spiritual well-being by what he sings, what he says in interviews, talk shows, and awards programs,

and what he does or doesn’t do in public. For many Christians of a certain generation, comb-ing through the lyrics of U2 songs (nearly all of them written by Bono) in search of biblical images or refer-ences to Jesus Christ and his teach-ings is almost a sport. Consider it a cross between exegesis andWhere’s Waldo? He doesn’t attend church regularly. He prays frequently. He likes to say grace before meals. He tries to have a “Sabbath hour” as of-ten as he can. His favorite Bible is Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase, The Message. He hangs out with Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones, but on a recent visit to Nashville he spent the morning palling around with Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant. Bono knows the subject of his personal faith is of great interest to others, although he’s certain that interest is misplaced. The inquiries don’t seem to bother him—Bono seems comfortable with who he is.

“As a rock star, I have two instincts, I want to have fun,

and I want to change the world. I have a chance to do both.”

He just celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary with his high-school sweetheart, Alison Stewart, his band had one of its most successful years artistically and professionally, and he has found his calling, on and off stage. Rarely has Bono talked explic-itly about his faith and beliefs. But as he has begun to recruit churches this past year in the fight against AIDS in Africa, that seems to be changing. From its beginnings, in the wake of punk-rock, U2 made music on a grand scale. The band’s early signature sound -- Bono’s ardent Irish tenor backed by open, echoing guitar chords from the Edge and the anthemic march beats of Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and Adam Clayton on bass -- was suited to re-sound through the biggest spaces while Bono sang of boundless yearnings: ro-mantic, social, spiritual. Once the band reached the arena and stadium circuit in the 1980s, it stayed there. It has had no lineup changes, no breakups, no reunions and no catering to nostalgia. Yet even as other bands mine U2’s catalog, the band defies its past. After two albums of comparatively straight-forward guitar-driven rock, ‘’No Line on the Horizon,’’ U2’s head-spinning 12th studio album, takes new experi-mental tangents and redefines the band yet again. The album, released March 3, 2009, burbles with cross-rhythms, layered guitars and electronic under-currents in songs the band wrote with its longtime producers, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. It’s not as startling a swerve as 1991’s ‘’Achtung Baby,’’ on which U2 reinvented itself after the earnest ‘80s with irony and electronic beats. But ‘’No Line on the Horizon,’’ the result of a convoluted two-year pro-cess, presents a band that is still rest-less and impassioned, kicking formu-las aside. Bono has leveraged celebrity into political clout. Part policy wonk, part showman, part charmer, he works on causes like ending extreme poverty in Africa. While he has been mocked as St. Bono, he strives not to be too single-minded. In a interview in The New York Times, described encounters

Mercy Corps, Oxfam America, Plan USA, Save the ChildrenU.S., World Concern, World Vision. The official launch rally was held on May 16, 2004 at Liberty Mall in Philadelphia. About 2,000 people attended, including Bono, Dikembe Mutombo, Mi-chael W. Smith, Richard Stearns (President ofWorld Vision), and David Beckmann (President of Bread for the World). In December 2004, ONE announced a $3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Corresponding with this announce-ment, Mark McKinnon, an adviser to President Bush, and Mike McCurry, an adviser to the Kerry Campaign, appeared on CNN’s Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff in support of ONE On May 22, 2007 the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria announced that it had saved 1.8 mil-lion lives since 2002, including a roughly doubling of services in the past year. ONE members had advocated for the increases to the Global Fund in both 2006 and 2007 . In June 2007, ONE launched ONE Vote ‘08. to mobilize American voters to en-gage the presidential candidates about the issues of global diseases and poverty. ONE Vote ‘08 seeks to have all the candidates make the fight against global poverty a key part of their national security and foreign policy platform. ONE Vote ‘08 is co-chaired by former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle (D-SD) andBill Frist (R-TN). Since the launch, state-wide initiatives have been established in each of the four early primary states—Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. In addition, the ONE Vote initiative has produced of-ficial and unofficial endorsements from presiden-tial candidates John Edwards and Bill Richardson. In 2008, ONE merged with DATA. The two orga-nizations are now run by CEO David Lane.[12]The ONE Campaign is a member of the Glob-al Coalition Against Pneumonia and supports World Pneumonia Day on November 2, 2009ONE uses a number of highly visible methods to reach out to the general public, promote its mes-sage, encourage action and raise funds. Celeb-rity spokespeople are used to speak to the media and undertake trips abroad televised visits to ar-eas suffering from poverty in order to illustrate the issues ONE is attempting to solve. ONE also uses its celebrity supporters for video ads which are released on YouTube. ONE is a largely Inter-net-based campaign and therefore has multiple online communities throughout cyberspace. As well as using YouTube, ONE has a significant ence on MySpace, Yahoo! Groups, and Flickr,

with presidential candidates and plans for his future col-umns on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times. He spoke fondly about his band mates as characters he’s still trying to figure out, about songs as bursts of serendipity and about what he wants in a performance: ‘’spastic elastic energy.’’ In his good work Bono came with a benefic with the world, The One. ONE is an organization which attempts to mobi-lize supporters around its issues and organize them into a lobbying force, with the goal of encouraging national lead-ers to fund more international development and relief pro-grams. As a campaign to fight extreme poverty and global diseases, it supports theMillennium Development Goals. Although its central talking points center on ending extreme poverty and fighting the AIDS pandemic, ONE supports a broad variety of international development and relief issues, including debt relief, clean water, increasing the quantity and efficiency of aid, lessening corruption in the governments of the aid-recipient countries, providing basic education for all, mak-ing trade more fair, reforming the farm bill to make it more fair for farmers in developing countries, slowing deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, and increasing the international affairs budget. ONE holds the position that increasing foreign development assistance will create a more secure world, believing that global poverty and the ideological extremism that fuels terrorism are linked. ONE was founded by 11 organizations: Bread for the World, CARE, DATA, In-

uses Facebook for its campus organizing. ONE also has field organizers around the United States to sup-port grassroots mobilization and advocacy. The field staff works with more than 200 local ONE groups that sponsor educational events, organize community aware-ness events, and lobby their Members of Congress.Supporters are encouraged to sign ONE’s declara-tion, encourage their family, friends and community to join and lobby their political representatives ONE has been criticized for its response to a book by Af-rican economist Dambisa Moyo, Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way For Africa, which was published in January 2009. Moyo accused ONE of mischaracterizing her views. She says that she is against only government aid, not “their kind of aid”. However, ONE argues that govern-mental development assistance “plays a critical role in the fight against extreme poverty and disease”. In June 2009 Dambisa Moyo told former U.S. presiden-tial Republican speech writer Peter Robinson during a Hoover Institute sponsoredUncommon Knowledge

interview that “the harshest thing that has happened [in terms of responses to her 2009 book Dead Aid], Bo-no’s and Bob Geldof’s organization, called One, who I had tried to have a number of meetings with before the book came out, about what the theses of the book were, launched a very vitriolic attack against me. To the point that they were calling organizations ahead of my meetings and media appointments and sent a let-ter to African NGO’s claiming, basically, painting me as a genocidal maniac trying to kill African babies. In other words, trying to get Africans to be against me. To me, that was not really fostering dialogue.”In September 2010, it was reported that the foun-dation used only 1.2% of their donations for chari-table causes, and that the majority went on salaries.

Fun Facts About "The Brain" This article is the first in a 2-part series where I will share over 70

ideas, facts, and resources from the “Linking Neuroscience” workshop that I feel may benefit you. My hope is that this infor-mation will provide you with some resources and new ideas to get

you thinking about what you do, why you do it, and how you can do it better. If you’re signed up for my email newsletter, you’ve already re-ceived this article. Be aware, too, that there are no detailed ex-planations. So if you have questions, be sure to contact me.

1. Exercise your working memory to increase your IQ and build brain structures.2. Subscribe to a “Nature Reviews” journal (www.nature.com/reviews). Topics include: Neuroscience, Neurology, Cancer, Clinical On-cology, et al. 3. In 5-10 years, fMRIs will be used as a diag-nostic tool, not just a research tool.4. The natural maturation of the brain continues into the 40s.5. Practicing a skill increases myelination which improves the efficiency.6. Myelin thins as we age because 1) we do not exercise our brain (physically or cognitively) and 2) metabolism is not as efficient.7. Fasciculi (the “superhighways”) connect func-tional networks in the brain. The architecture for these superhighways are laid during the critical

developmental periods–mostly in the first 3 years of life.8. Basic neurodevelopment: 1) Creates superhighways (builds connections between networks) then 2) Paves them (builds myelin for efficiency and speed).9. Therapy forces a person to do what they can’t do. The unaffected brain areas send out chemical signals which recruit neurons from other areas to repair the network. This works to re-wire the brain, forcing it to recover the skill they “can’t” do.10. Rehabilitation is not about “time” to recover. It’s about “residual function”–is there enough of it to force the brain to re-wire?.11. The Mirror Neuron system allow the brain to organize itself by watching others. Mirror neurons fire whether you do the task (e.g. throw a ball) or whether you watch someone else do it.12. Therapy is a two step process:1) you stimulate the

13. Visualization is a type of top-down processing. Doing something (e.g. experiencing it) is a type of bottom-up processing.14. The brain develops from right to left and from back to front.15. Mirror neurons are the reason we will never be able to replace a human therapist.16. Practicing a new skill learned in therapy only works if the patient practices it “correctly.”17. In the field of neuroscience, anything discovered before 2002 is considered “historical.”18. Neurotransmitters–the “how” of therapy.19. Therapy involves changing these 3 neurotransmitters: 1) dopamine (involved in motivation and making new connections “stick”), 2) acetylcholine (makes the client pay attention to you), 3) norepinephrine (works to make new connections).20. A therapist’s job: tell the client what to do, tell them how to do it, keep them doing it.21.The brain is a “use it or lose it” organ. Keep practic-ing.22. A newborn’s brain is 1/3 the size of an adult brain. The other 2/3 will be based on connections (the “sper-highways” or synapses).23. The brain develops based on experience. What we expose children to affects their brains forever.24. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is impaired in chil-dren with autism and in children who have been abused and neglected.25. Males are more vulnerable to learning disorders because the neurons responsible for learning are moving (“migrating”) to the left hemisphere at the same time that male genitalia develops. The testosterone involved can affect where those neurons migrate to.26. We have 23 chromosomes. Each chromosome has ap-prox. 1,000 genes. You do the math.27. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental issue, not a disease that can be cured by drugs.28. Every therapist has a responsibility to educate clients on the importance of diet and exercise.29. Epigenetics = a fascinating field that studies environ-mental influences that turn genes on and off.30. Physical exercise releases Brain-Derived Neuro-trophic Factor (BDNF). Just 4 hours of moderate exercise a week will release enough of this hormone to keep your brain growing and plastic.31. There is nothing worse on the developing brain than limiting experience.32. The recipe for a healthy developing brain? Talk, Sing, Play, Explore to/with the child.

33. Music and speech are organized sounds.34. Don’t haphazardly “praise” your clients for their efforts. Limit your praise and rewards to progressive change towards the positive (or towards the goal). Only this will refine their brain.35. Any sensory system can be modified and changed.36. Humans pay attention to what they’re good at and what they’re motivated to do. That’s why so many struggle in therapy and why therapists often feel like cheerleaders.37. Agnosia = a modality-specific (e.g. sight, sound, touch) disorder of recognition.38. Functional, outcome-based therapy involves focus-ing on: 1) safety, 2) independence, 3) quality of life, and 4) client/family involvement in planning goals and strategies for success.39. Episodic memory is closely tied to our sense of self. It’s how we describe ourselves and it’s one of the first things to go in dementia.40. The average sentence length (for spoken English) is 7 words, 14 syllables. The average ASL sentence is 5 words.41. The hippocampus does not store memories. It’s sim-ply the recorder and the searcher. It records memories (which are stored somewhere else based on context) and searches for memories we’re trying to recall.42. Exercising the hippocampus will help keep you young. Do the crossword puzzle. Take tests.43. The amygdala is the emotional center of the brain. It’s Latin for “almond” because the structure itself is shaped like one.44. The amygdala supercharges our hippocampus. That’s why we remember so vividly where we were on 9/11–but probably don’t remember what we had for breakfast last Thursday.45. Thanks to the amygdala, making therapy more emo-tional will make therapy more effective.46. Once you know something and know it well, you don’t need the hippocampus anymore.47. Biologically-primitive structures (e.g. those in the limbic system) are not as plastic as newer structures (e.g. the cortex).48. It takes 4 minutes of exposure to information (via exposure, rehearsal, and practice) for it to make it through the night. 49. People with autism have a disturbance in inhibition. Everything gets activated. They can’t get rid of irrel-evant information.50. Therapists have the most powerful effect on the hu-man brain. We are sculpting and re-wiring brains.
