Introduction

You are going to a family reunion. Your family is made up of all kinds of instruments. The only problem is there are four different families of instruments in which you could be a part.

While trying to find your family, you may meet some people from other families. How do you know that you are at the correct reunion?

TaskYou will randomly be

given a name of an instrument. You will need to find the family in which you belong.

Once you find the name of your family, you will group yourself with other family members. There should be 4 or 5 instruments in your family. (One family may be a little larger.)

The instruments will work together in their “families” to gather information about themselves and their family members that they will share with the other “families”.

ProcessWhat are the names of the families in which you could be a member? (Hint: They are the names of the families of the orchestra.)Go to the INFOhio page at http://www.infohio.org/Enter username and password if prompted. (Ask teacher or librarian for password if at school.)Choose the Resources for Grades K-5 button.Choose the Kids Search Grade 3-5 button.Type in the words musical instruments in the FIND box.Select GO.Scroll down until you find the article titled Instruments of the Orchestra. World Almanac for Kids, 2000, p134-135, 2p, 23bw.Click on this article.Scroll down this page to read the article or print a copy of the article so you may answer the essential question. DO NOT CLOSE INFOHIO.

After you find the four names of the families, come to me to get the name of the instrument you will be for the project. Go back to your computer and go through the infohio process again. This time, you will find the article that is titled Musical Instruments. World Almanac for Kids, 2006, p. 140-140, 1p, 1bw. Click on this article. Scroll down until you find the list of instruments under their families. Your instrument will be under your family’s name.Once you have found the name of your family, you will need to find the rest of the members of your family (these are other students in the class). Your family is your group for the project.Once you have been reunited with your family, you will have to find some information about yourself and your family. After the information is gathered, you will give a presentation to the other families about what you have found.

I have provided you with some questions to help you find the information you need about yourself and your group.

Now that you know more about yourself and your family, come together as a family and decide how you would explain your family to another family in the room.

Be prepared to tell some things about yourself and about your family in your presentation.

Teacher NotesThis WebQuest is geared toward a fourth grade general music class

It may be helpful to discuss how the instruments’ sounds differ in regards to their size.

The questions worksheet I made was a copy of all the questions the students need to answer in the WebQuest. I give a copy of the worksheet to each student so they can write their answers to prepare for their oral report.

I made a worksheet with all of the instrument names and then cut them into cards. I randomly give the students one card after they find the four families of instruments.
