The organization was formed on October 31, 1979, when 68 firms en- visioned an association that could be an impor- tant voice for the promo- tion of business ideas in Panama. Since its founding, the Chamber has provided members with informa- tion, connections, con- ferences and seminars on a variety of important topics. In addition, the Chamber publishes a selection of newsletters, research articles, a bi- monthly magazine and an annual directory. AmCham is a non-profit, non-political, independ- ent, voluntary associa- tion supported primarily by membership dues. Much of the organiza- tion's work is accom- plished through the ef- forts of volunteer mem- ber committees which collaborate to help AM- CHAM promote free en- terprise in Panama. AmCham Committees The organization has Twelve active commit- tees, that has meetings every month and organ- ize different activities to promote ideas for the interests of the partici- pating group. The committees are: Construction Commit- tee: Chair Eduardo Villalaz. Corporate Social Re- sponsibility Committee (CSR): Chair Mercedes Morris. Environmental Commit- tee: Chair Jennifer Simpson. Hydrocarbons Commit- tee: Chair Eyda Varela. Organizational Develop- ment and Human Capi- tal Committee (ODHC): Chair Maria Eugenia Fonseca. Real Estate Committee: Chair C.E. Maurice Belanger. AmCham Panama is run by a board of 12 direc-tors elected by the mem-bership for two-year terms. Six members are elected each year, alter-nating. The Board then elects the four officers

from among their own for one-year terms. The Board holds monthly meetings to manage the Chamber and in turn makes important deci-sions regarding member-ship, events to be held
