On March 16th, the En-vironmental Committee

met at AmCham with eleven people attend-ing.

The members heard a

presentation by Gloria Batista de Vega, re-searcher at the Coast Areas Administration of

the Universidad de Pa-nama, who talked about the Versatility of Algae and the benefits

of Panama for growing it.

Panama has better cli-

mate conditions on the Caribbean coast than

other countries, making it an ideal place to cre-ate a suitable environ-ment for the growth of

Algae, and Mrs. Vega has been researching the different kinds of Algae that exist in Pa-

nama, focusing her re-search in the Caribbean Sea, especially in the Kuna Community.

The p resen ta t i on started with a brief in-troduction by Ms. Jenni-fer Simpson, who ex-

plained the different uses of the Algae as

Biofuels, Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Oils, Industrial Lubri-cants and Additives,

High Quality Animal and Fish Food, Organic Soil Enhancements, Mi-crobiotic Waste Man-

agement, Carbon Cap-ture and Sequestration, and Bioplastics. She also mentioned the

multiple benefits that the use of the algae has for the environment.

Then, Mrs. Vega spoke

about the uses that the Kuna’s community gives to Algae, specially for medicinal and nutri-

tional purpose, explain-ing how she developed an Algae sustainable Farm project with this

community and how the Kuna have started to export this product to France and Taiwan

for use in the manufac-ture of cosmetics, food and bio medicine.
