On February 23, twelve

members of the Envi-

ronmental Committee

met at AMCHAM to

learn about climate

change. The speaker,

Michele Douglas, is a

representative of The

Climate Project (TCP),

a non-profit group sup-

ported by the Al Gore

Foundation, which edu-

cates the public about

the harmful effects of

climate change and

works toward grass-

roots solutions.

Ms. Douglas explained

that the accumulation

of greenhouse gases in

the atmosphere trap

the Sun’s heat -

producing radiation,

causing the Earth’s

surface to warm. In-

creasing land and wa-

ter temperatures cause

more flooding and

droughts, and lead to

more powerful hurri-

canes and widespread

loss of biodiversity.

Scientists around the

world concur that cli-

mate changes are un-

derway and are leading

mankind to a climate

crisis.

The challenges before

us, says Ms. Douglas,

include ramping up

zero-emissions energy

solutions - many of

which are now under-

way - and improving

energy conservation

technologies. On a per-

sonal level, Ms. Doug-

las recommends that

everyone find ways to

reduce their energy

use; become a green

shopper; and support

groups that reforest

and protect threatened

wildlife habitats and

that lobby for sustain-

able land use.
