Issue 1 6 February 2013
Every Child, Every Day
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to all our students, staff and parents of the Alyangula Area School learning community to the new 2013 school year. It’s been a pleasure to see all the students returning with fresh faces and many with new school uniforms. There is an excited buzz in the air which promises an outstanding year for our school. There are a number of new staff that have joined us this year, which I would like to welcome to our School. All of these new staff are both highly skilled and enthusiastic to join our Alyangula Area School team and become part of our learning community. There are also many new students who have joined us this year whom I would also like to welcome. In order to help new families to settle in we have a 2013 Parent Handbook which is available at the front office. This handbook attempts to provide parents with information on all aspects of the school. I encourage parents to either email [email protected] or come into the front office and ask for a copy. To begin the strong relationships and communication between home and school, which is essential for our students learning, the school will be holding a Meet and Greet afternoon on Tuesday 12th February between 3.00pm until 7.00pm for Preschool through to Middle School. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s classroom teacher and hear about their expectations and routines for their class. Please see the timetable for the Meet and Greet in this newsletter. An important part of our school culture is ensuring that all of our community is aware of our Motto, Vision, Mission and Values. The ‘motto’ of Alyangula Area School is:
WE LEARN FOR LIFE VISION Our school will provide quality teaching and learning programs to enable all students to become fully engaged learners in a dynamic and innovative educational environment. MISSION Our mission is to provide an education as good as that which the students will receive at any other high calibre school in Australia. We do this by:
Creating and maintaining a warm, secure learning environment Creating and nurturing the desire to learn Developing student’s abilities in all curriculum areas Developing skills in communication, imagination, appreciation, self-expression, creativity, social awareness, tolerance, adaptability and
flexibility. Focusing on:
Pedagogy and curriculum Facilities and physical environment Positive student behaviour and recognition of learning Information and computer technology Parental and Community involvement and support
VALUES Respect Integrity Professionalism Excellence Accountability
At the end of 2012 a School Wide Positive Behaviour committee was formed, this included school staff and parents. This committee looked at our current school values and felt that they were not student friendly and especially difficult for Early Childhood students to understand. A survey was developed for students, staff and parents of which some parents have already contributed to however I would like to encourage all parents, staff and students to drop by the front office and complete the survey which takes just a couple of minutes. The proposed new school values are: Respect, Safety and Excellence. These values would be very easy for students to understand and would become the basis for explicit lessons in class. It was felt by the committee that these 3 values would encompass all aspects required to ensure our learning community is a successful one. Jo Jefferson

Welcome to our new Teachers All of our students and teachers come from a diverse background and Middle School thought it would be a good idea to ask our
new teacher’s four questions.
Where have you come from?
What was your last school?
What is your first impression of Alyangula?
What do you miss the most?
Mrs.Syme
Emu Park on the Capricorn Coast near Rockhampton
Berserker Primary in Rockhampton where I taught Science, English and IT across the school.
Friendly people.
Nothing I have always enjoyed working in a remote community and this is one school that I have always wanted to teach at.
Mrs. Slocombe
Mornington Peninsular.
Rosebud Primary on the Mornington Peninsular.
Love it, welcoming and friendly people. Fish delivered to our door and waiting for my first fishing trip.
Missing our wider family, our boy’s cousins and 24 hr. servo.
Mrs. Moore
Mildura
Mildura West (400+ students) where I was responsible for Reading Recovery and Literacy Leader.
Excellent neighbors, friendly community, tropical environment where we don’t need to request water for the school oval.
Community events.
Our property where we had orchards of apples, oranges, avocadoes etc. Growing your own tomatoes and day trips to the
river.
Mr. Slocombe
Mornington Peninsular, Safety Beach (it was called Shark Bay but they changed it as no one would swim there).
Elizabeth Murdoch College, Langwarrin, Frankston.
Friendly welcoming community, consistent weather and great pool and facilities.
Cricket Club and mates, family, 24hr servo and fish and chips.
A message from our new Assistant Principal
Alyangula Area School Community,
My name is Ben Slocombe and I am the new Assistant Principal at Alyangula Area School. My wife, Danielle and two boys, Ethan (5 years) and Lenny (18 months) have been in Alyangula for two weeks and have been made to feel very welcome within the community. I thank you all for this.
I developed my educational philosophy in Pre School, Primary and Secondary schools. I believe in developing strong educational relationships with students, staff, parents and school communities, which combined with clear student driven teaching practices result in engaging and relevant learning. I merged relationships, engaging and relevant learning with student wellbeing on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, indigenous and Darwin communities of the Northern Territory and the international, multicultural classrooms of Singapore.
My primary role is to ensure the students health, wellbeing and educational needs are meet and that school is a happy and safe learning environment for all.
Please feel free to stop and chat whenever you see me and my family around town.
Ben Slocombe

After School Care
Currently the Alyangula Early Childhood Centre is investigating the viability of running After School Care at
Alyangula Area School. This would be a service that parents would need to pay for, which is licensed with
qualified staff. Parents would be able to claim the Childcare Rebate for these fees as per normal child care
facilities and programs. This program would be able to cater for all students enrolled at Alyangula Area School
in Transition to Year 10.
If this program was successful in getting enough interested parents and places, this service would then replace
the current Active After School Program. The Active After School activities would become part of the After
School Care Service.
Please contact Michelle Leonard on 89877075 to register your interest.
