October - November 2017 DearVillagers.ThankstoeveryonewhoattendedtheGreatBritishQuizNight.Specialthankstoourresidentquizmaster,TonyScott,whoprovideduswithanexcellentandchallengingquiz.Twentyteamscompetedfortheprideofthevillage;welldonetoTeamCarryOnQuizzingwhoachievedastupendousscoreof95!ThankstoalltheAVAcommitteemembersandothervolunteerswhomadetheeveningasuccess.ThevillagenowhasanAutomatedElectronicDefibrillatorpurchasedbyfundsraised.ltislocatedattheentrancetotheMaltHouseinayellowsecuritycabinet.Itisintendedtoprovidepotentiallylifesavingassistanceforanyonesufferingacardiacemergency.TheAEDisregisteredwiththeAmbulanceService.Inthecaseofanemergencyyoushoulddial999andtheAmbulanceServicewillgivethecallertheaccesscodeforthesecuritybox.Whenthedeviceisturnedoninstructionsarespokenbytheunitregardingitseffectiveuse.TheAVAmayarrangeforfirstrespondertraining(whichincludesfamiliarisationtrainingforourAED)dependingonlevelofinterest/costs.Ifyouwouldliketobeincludedpleaseemailchris.alvestonvillage@gmail.com.Renovationworkhasbegunonthevillagephonebox.Itwillsoonhaveitssmartredtopcoatintimeforwinter.Regards,ChrisFox,AVAChair

FairsbeganaftertheBlackDeathinEngland-manyworkershaddiedleavinglandlordswithnoonetoworkthelandandthisdrovewagesup.AlawwasintroducedtoreturnwagestolevelsbeforetheBlackDeath.Localmagistratescouldsettheratesofpayatspecialcourts.Thesetookplaceatgatheringsorfairs.Landownerssawthisasanopportunitytohirefarmworkers,labourersanddomesticservantshencetheybecameknownashiringfairs.InsomeareasoftheMidlands,especiallyaroundtheCotswolds,hiringfairswereknownasMopfairs.Thisnamecamefromtheemblempeopleworeintheirlapelsasasymboloftheirtrade,thesesmalltasselswereknownas“mops”.Onceapersonwashiredtheywouldexchangetheirmopforablueribbonandatokenworthaboutone
shillingthattheycouldspendamongstthestallsatthefair.TheRunawayMop,heldoneweeklater,originatedfromtheneedtoreconsiderandrehireanystaff beforecommittingtoafullyear’swork.ThispleasurefairremainsakeydateintheWarwickshirecalendar.Specialtrainsusedtobelaidontobringpeopletoandfromthetown.StratfordMopwasrenownedforitsroasts.Thepublichousesputtheseonfortheirregularsandtherecouldbeupto18roastsinthetown!
