To be recognized as an outstanding undergraduate program that provides exceptional education through the utilization of interactive classroom instruction and clinical experiences; preparing students to excel on the Board of Certification Exam and to enter the profession as qualified health care providers. The ATEP also strives to promote the Athletic Training profession as an essential component of the allied health care field. Updating YOU where YOUR career started Many of this years’ seniors are still deciding on where they are going to start their careers. Some are seeking Graduate Positions which include Lindenwod University, University of Maine, George Mason University and University of Detroit - Mercy. Others (Kelsey LaValley, Olivia Schultz, Michelle Smigelski, and Madeline Svec) are seeking employment. Mark Sulavik and Taylor Witczak are excited to be attending GVSU yet again to obtain their DPT. Athletic Training Program Update

GrandValleyAthleticTrainingcontinuestomakeusproud!IamproudtoreportthatGVSUgraduateshaveachieveda100%passrateonthenationalcertificationexamforthefifthyearinarow(April2015-March2016)whichmeanswestillmaintainour3yearfirst-timepassingrateof100%;comparedtoanational3yearaverageof78%forallprograms!Toputthisintoperspective,GVSUisstilltheonlyprograminthestateofMichiganthatachieveda3yearpassrateof100%and1of24programsoutof336inthecountry(Bachelor’sprofessionalprograms).Iwillcontinuetopostourscoresonthehomepage,butyoucanalsofindpassratesforallprogramsatwww.caate.net.Thesuccessofthisprogramisatestamenttoeveryonewhocontributestoourprogramonadailybasis,including;students,preceptors,physicians,faculty,staff,andalumni.Thankyoutoallinvolved!

StudentsintheprogramcontinuetoseekoutexcitingnewinternshiplocationsandthisyearourstudentshavebeenprivilegedtoworkwiththeChicagoCubs,Disney’sWideWorldofSports,UniversityofDenver,UniversityofMaine,MississippiStateUniversity,DetroitMedicalCenter,i’Move,MercyHealthSystems,andtheLegacyCenter.Theseareonlyafewofthemanyexcitinglocations,andthefeedbackwereceivefromtheirclinicalinstructorscontinuestobeoutstanding,statingtheywouldtakeaGVSUstudentanyday!!!

TheATStrategicAlliance,comprisedoftheBOC,CAATE,NATA,andNATAFoundationannouncedtheirdecisionlastyeartochangetheATDegreeLeveltoaMaster’s.Sinceourlastnewsletter,ithasbeenannouncedthatallprogramscanlongeradmittotheBachelor’sDegreeprogramsstartingin2022.Duringthe2015-2016academicyeartheATfacultycontinuedtodevelopthenewMaster’slevelcurriculum,andsubmittedanewProgramProspectusintheWintersemesterwhichwasapprovedbytheProvost.ThismeansthatwehavepermissiontostarttodevelopourNewProgram(whichwehavealreadybeendoing!),whichweareaimingtosubmitthisfall.TohelpinsurethatGVSUmaintainsourstatusasoneoftheleadingATprogramsinthecountrywearetakingtimetoexplorealloptionsopenandtofindonethatwillbeabestfitforus.Wewillcontinuetokeepyouinformedastowhereweareintheprocessofmovingforward!

TheyearofITAstartedoffwithlargegoalsandanticipationforwhatisthecome.Inthefallthosewhoparticipatedwereabletovolunteer,raisemoneyandlearnfromtheguestspeakerstoenhancetheireducation.ITAhasgivennewmembersoftheprogramaplacetofindhelpintheireducationandmeetfriendgoingthroughthesamepath.GuestspeakerMikeSegerwasabletoaddtoourskillswithalessonofspineboardingoniceandaCEUeventwithPJManvillefromtheChicagoCubs.Thankyoutoallotherguestspeakers.

ITAfirsteventofthefallwasvolunteeringattheJuvenileDiabeteswalk,whichisourphilanthropy.Thisevenwasgreatforthecommunitytoseeoutfacesanduseourskills.ThemoneytheyraisedwasforITAandJuvenileDiabetesthroughsellingGriffinstickets,andBigbyfundraisers.Throughtheeffortsofourmembers,theclubwasabletosellhundredsoftickets. Withthehelpofanewincentiveprogram,suchaspaidGLATAregistrationsforthetopsellers,ourmembersweremoremotivatedtoselltickets.Theclubislookingforwardtofindingnewfundraisingopportunitiesfortheclubintheupcomingyear.

AsgroupmanyattendedtheStudentMATSconferencethatwashostedonGrandValley’scampus;ITAwasabletosupporttheactivemembersinattendingthisevent.GreatLakesAthleticTrainers’AssociationConferenceintheSpringsemesterhostedinWheellingIL,wasanotherclubsupportedtrip.Thistripwasabletoopentheclinicalandpost-schoolopportunitiesfortheattendees,allowthestudentstogainnewinsightsandusetheirskillsinastudentskillschallenge.KeepaneyeoutforthematNATA. Additionalclubeventsoverthecourseoftheyearincludedintramuralsports,gatheringdonationsfortheWoodsdinner,andparticipationinvariousvolunteerevents,suchastheGazelleGirlHalfMarathonandFifthThirdRiverbankRun. Asanotherupcomingyearcomesinthefalltheclubislookingforwardtomoreincentivesforactivemembers,moreactivitiesforthemembersandstartinganstudentbasescholarshipprogram.WearepleasedtoannounceSaraHelderasPresident,BrettFoxasPresident-Elect,ChrisBaubieasVicePresident,DanielSwansonasTreasurer,SarahGoodwinasSecretary,AnnaZahoraasFundraisingChair,andChristianFoslerasSocialChair.

HT StephanieLeech(formerlyStephanieDyer),receivedherBachelorsofScienceinAthleticTrainingfromGrandValleyStateUniversityin2009.ShefurtheredhereducationatBowlingGreenStateUniversity,wheresheworkedasaGraduateAssistantAthleticTrainerforthewomen’sgymnasticsteam.Mrs.LeechwasalsoanadvisorfortheBGSUathletictrainingstudentorganizationandassistedwiththeestablishmentoftheorganizationin2009.ItwasherewhereshemethernowhusbandAdamLeech,whoisalsoanathletictrainer.

AfterreceivingherMastersofEducationinDevelopmentalKinesiologyandhavingherMastersprojectpublishedintheJournalofAlliedHealthSciencesandPractice,StephaniewasaskedtojointheBGSUstaff.Shespentoneyearasafull-timestaffmemberworkingastheprimaryassistanttofootballandasaninstructortothepathology/orthopedicinjurycourse.

Mrs.LeechiscurrentlyworkingasanAssistantAthleticTraineratPurdueUniversityunderherformerBGSUsupervisor.StephanieandAdambothjoinedthePurdueUniversitysportsmedicinestaffinJuly2012.Herprimaryresponsibilitiesarefootballandwoman'sswimmingwhileAdamworksdirectlywiththemen’swrestlingprogram.Inaddition,Stephanieenjoysmentoringtheundergraduateathletictrainingstudentsintheirclinicalhoursandservesasaninstructortothejuniorathletictrainingstudentclinicalpracticumcourse.

Purdue’sathletictraining programhasarichhistoryandalumnibaseanchoredby WilliamE.“Pinky”NewellandDennyMiller.Inchargeof alumnirelationsandtheyearlynewsletter,“Tapecuts,” Stephaniehasalso,developedanewdatabaseto improvethecommunicationwithPurdue’sstrong alumnicommunity.Shehascontinuedtoengagein professionaldevelopmentbybecomingcertifiedin GRASTONtechniqueaswellasaBLSCPRinstructor.A formerwomen’sswimmerhadagreatimpacton Stephanie,andhassparkedaninterestinpreventing/ treatingeatingdisordersinathletes.

AsanathletictrainingstudentatGVSU,herfavoriteandmostmemorableclinicalrotationwaswithsoftball.DougWoods,whowasalsocoachingatthetime,washerclinicalinstructor.“Doc”dedicatedhimselftotheprofessionandhadapassionforteachingeachstudent.Shefeelsveryfortunatetohavebeenmentoredbyhimandwisheshimthebestinhisretirement.

Outsideofathletictraining,sheenjoystimewithherfamilyandtwofurchildren,Koda(dog)andRiley(cat).ShetravelsuptotheMitteneachsummertoenjoythelakeandseeherfellowGVSUclassmatesinthearea.StephanieisverygratefulandblessedforalltheopportunitiesshehashadandisexcitedtoseewhatGodhasinstoreforhernext.

After40yearsofservice,Doug“Doc”Woodshasdecideditistime.Inastaffmeeting,inDocfashion,hesubtlystatedthat“fornextyearsbudgetyoudon’tneedtoincludemine,IthinkI’mdone.”Ittookaminuteforthistosinkinandthenweallcongratulatedhimandweresadtoseehimleave.Weallknowthoughthatthisisnotgoodbye.Hewillstillbeandalwayswillbeapartoftheuniversity.

Doc,nativeofOttawa,OH,receivedaBachelorsofSciencefromtheUniversityofToledo.TherehestartedhiscareerinathletictraininggoingfromastudentassistanttoAssistantAthleticTrainer.andhisMastersofEducationatGVSU.In1976,DocwasthefirstHeadAthleticTrainer.Duringthattimeinthe70’sDocwasaheadofthetimes,puttingthefirstcollegeinMichigantohavewomenathletictrainersworkwithGVSUFootballteam(withpermissionandhelpfromPresidentArendD.LubbersandAthleticDirectorGeorgeMacDonald).NotonlywasDocbusytreatingathletes,by1978,DochadestablishedanaccreditedAthleticTrainingProgramweallknowandlovetoday.

In1991DocofferedMikeKovalchik(AthleticDirector)tobethecoach.Mikeaskedifhewouldforoneyear,whichturnedinto24years.In1996,DocandsomestudentscreatedtheWoodsAthleticTrainingScholarshipEndowment.Laterin1998,DochaddecidedtostepdownfrombeingtheHeadAT.ThatyearToddJagerwashiredtofillDoc’slargeshoes.Todddidafantasticjobandunfortunatelylosthisbattlewith

GlioblastomaMultiformbraincancerin2007.ThisiswhenMarkStoessner,currentHeadAT,wasjoinedtotheGVteam.

In1993,1999,2000,2001,2004,2012,and2013DocwasnamedGLIACCoachoftheYear.Heistheonlycoachtoreceivethistitlethreeconsecutiveyearsinarow.In2008,DochadthehonorofbeinginductedintotheMATSHallofFameforhisdedicationandpassionforthefield.In2011theNationalFastpitchCoachesAssociationnamedGVSUastheNCAAMidwestRegionCoachingStaffoftheyear.InSpring2015and889wins,heretiredfrombeingtheHeadSoftballCoach.Alongwithretiringthisyear,DocwasanhonoreefortheCelebratingWomeninSportandPhysicalActivity.

DocplanstospendtimewithhissweetandlovelywifeLinda(45years),theirtwochildrenMattandHeather,andcontinuestowatchsportingeventsanddramaplaysoftheirgrandchildren.Congratulationsseemsanunderstatement,butenjoyeveryminuteofitDoc.Seeyouatnextyearsdinner!!!

OnonApril29,2016,intheGrandRiverRoomintheKirkhoffbuildingwasyetanothersuccessfuldinner.ThisyearDougandLindaWoodsExcellenceinAthleticTrainingawardrecipientsofthewereAshleyTallaricoandDanielSwanson.ThisscholarshipisawardedtoathletictrainingstudentsinappreciationoftheiracademicsuccessanddedicationtotheGVSUathletictrainingdepartment.

Inaddition,weawardedtheRiverValleyOrthopedicsSeniorAthleticTrainingServiceAwardgiventoTaylorWitczakbyourorthopedicteamdocs,Dr.JackHealeyandDr.TimHenne.Thisawardisforaathletictrainingstudentwhodemonstrates

excellenceintheirclinicalrotationandisinvolvedinthepromotionofathletictrainingatalocal,stateornationallevel.

TheToddJagerMemorialAward,whichisgiventoagraduateathletictrainingstudentpursuingacareerincollegeathletics.Thisstudenthastohaveacommitmenttoathletictrainingandastrongacademicbackground.TheawardwaspresentedbyMikeBraid(Lauriewasunabletoattendthedinnerthisyear)toBrookeMagaard.

AlisonReddickisagraduatedfromGVSUin2012.Upongraduation,AlisonwenttoAdrianCollegetoworkasacertifiedinternwithfootball,women'sbasketball,andwomen'slacrosseteams.AlisonthendecidedtogotoIllinoisStateUniversityinNormal,ILtoobtainaMastersofScienceinAthleticTrainingwithanemphasisonmanualtherapy.WhileshewasthereshewasGraduateAssistantwiththeRedbirdWomen'sSoccerteam.Thispastfall(2015)AlisonhasreturnedtoGVSU.SheworksprimarilywiththeWomen’sSoccer,Women'sLacrosse,andtheMenandWomen’sSwimandDiveteams.Inhersparetimesheenjoysrunning,hiking,andtripstoTexastovisitherfamily.

P.DouglasKindschiHallofScience(KHS)officiallyopenedthispastyear.TheMovementScienceDepartmenthasmovedtothetopatthefourthfloor.Itcovermorethan151,000squarefeetandhouseninenewclassrooms,15teachinglaboratories,14student/facultyresearchlaboratories,agreenhouse,officesandstudyspaces.AttachedtothebuildingisthenewhomefortheUniversityBookstore,Starbucks,andWhichWhich.

TheRecreationCenterisstillundergoingtheir2storyexpansion.Thisprojectnowhastwophases.ThemajorityisstillsettobecompletedinFallof2016withaddingabout50,000sq.ft.tothecurrentRecreationBuilding.Thisismorethanoriginallyreported.ThesecondphasewillbecompletedbytheendoftheWinter2017.Thisspacewillhaveanewmainlobby,newofficesforcampusrecreation,renovationofcurrentofficesforcampusrecreation,increasethecardioandweightroomspace,2courtsforbasketballandvolleyball,1multi-activitycourt,anewspinningroom,morespaceforstretchingandfunctionalworkouts,newlockerrooms,andmorestoragespacefortheusers.TheyarehopingtobeabletoobtainaLEEDcertificationforSilverstanding.Formoreupdatesandpicturesoftheprogresspleasevisithttp://www.gvsu.edu/sportsfacilities/recreation-center-expansion-34.htm.Lastly,thisbuildingisalsogettinganewroof.

AtthesametimetheRecreationCenterwasapprovedsowastheadditionofstudenthousing.TheHolton-HookerLearningandLivingCenterwillbea145,000sq.ft.buildingrightwhereRobinsonFieldwas

located.TheytoredowntheMacyHooblerLivingCenterof50beds,whichwasbuiltin1987.Thisnewhousingbuildingwillaccommodate498beds,studyspace,laundryfacilities,loungespace,agameroom,outdoorrecspace,fourstudentclassrooms,acomputerlab,mediaroom,threefacultyoffices,amulti-purposeroomandEinstein’sBagel.ThisstillhasatargetopendateofAugust2016.Toseewhatthefloorplanslooklikeyoucanvisittheirpageathttps://www.gvsu.edu/housing/students/holton-hooker-learning-and-living-center-168.htm

WithinthelastmonththeRavinesLivingCenterhasbeenremoved.ThehousingforthosestudentshavebeenmovedtotheHolton-HookerLearningandLivingCenter.ThecommunitybuildingwillstayandbecometheCampusRecreationAdventureandEducationCenterandaddsomemuchneededparking.Moreisyettobeannounced.Therewasaceremonyduringhomecomingforalumnitovisittheravinesonelasttime.

Wewerealsofortunatetohavea1yearGraduateAssistantposi1onwhichwasfilledbyBradStempky,AT,ATCwhoalsodidanoutstandingjobforus.BradjoinedusfromUniversityofToledowithamastersinExerciseScience.WhileatGVheispursuingadegreeinOccupa1onalTherapy.
