Homecoming 2008

Powder puff football, a Greek god and goddess pageant and a 3-on-3 basketball

tournament were all part of Homecoming 2008 in October. These were student events that allowed young Bobcats to have fun and show their Bobcat pride at the same time.

Midweek the festivities took on a new look at the annual Homecoming talent show in Evans Auditorium — the talent seems to get even better every year.

Alumni who were prepared to cele-brate began to arrive as the weekend approached. This year the Texas State Alumni Association hosted a special reunion for the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award recipients. Each year the association chooses several alumni who have made an impact on Texas, the nation and the world to honor at Homecoming (see story on page 80). Those elite from this year and years past came together at a special reception and awards presentation on Friday evening.

The 1958 Golden Graduates were honored at a special luncheon on Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their walk across the stage. After brunch the groups enjoyed a guided van tour of campus and tried to recognize their old stomping grounds.

The Alumni Association hosted a fajita buffet in the alumni tents at Bobcat Stadium before the afternoon game with Central Arkansas. After the game the returning alumni made their way back to the alumni tents to participate in the All Greek Reunion.

Student Foundation reunion

The Texas State Student Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary reunion

on Sept. 20. Retired Dean of Students John Garrison was honored at the event for his service and dedication to Texas State and to celebrate his new appointment as president of San Marcos Baptist Academy.

Campus van tours and a “meet and greet” at the LBJ Student Center kicked off the event. Alumni and students reminisced over old photographs, scrapbooks and Peda-gogs. The event was a success with alumni catching up with their Bobcat friends.

The featured event was a cocktail reception and banquet at Quail Creek Country Club. The banquet included a special presentation for Garrison, who retired from Texas State after 33 years of service. The presentation highlighted his years of dedication to the university and the students of Texas State.

Beth Moore ’82 honored

Houston religious leader Beth Green Moore ’82 was honored with Chi

Omega’s Malinda Jolley Mortin Woman of Achievement Award in July before more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae delegates at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis. The national award is the fraternity’s highest

honor that recognizes distinguished accom-plishment in service to Chi Omega, service to an individual’s community and to the nation. “Beth Moore is an inspiration for all

of us,” said Chi Omega Foundation Presi-dent Jane Rogers. “We honor her for her work on behalf of women around the world and for her many and lasting contributions to the international community of faith.”

Moore has written numerous books and Bible studies and is a frequent radio and TV commentator. She has made presenta-tions based on her books throughout the world and was named a Distinguished Alumna in 2001.

Missing ring found via directory

Robert Reue ’81 and his brother went fishing recently at San Luis Pass

on Galveston Island (before Ike passed through). Robert took off his wedding ring and Texas State ring and put them in his pants pocket so he wouldn’t lose them. When they returned from the fishing trip, only the wedding ring was in his pocket. They searched all over to locate the ring, but it was gone.

A couple of days later, Robert received a call from Carol Kieschnick ’76. She had found his Texas State ring in the parking lot by the cabins at San Luis Pass. Being an alumna herself, Carol recognized the ring right away, and Robert’s name was engraved on the inside. which millions of people communicate, so the Alumni Association is hopping on the band wagon. To maintain contact with our alumni for meaningful and lasting relation-ships, the association has created pages for MySpace and Facebook social networking Web sites and added an alumni group to LinkedIn.

All three of these Web sites are a new generation of e-mail that has swept Texas State along with every other university. Social networking sites have allowed people to stay in touch with others without using up cell phone minutes and are growing every day.

MySpace has more than 100 million active users; Texas State has 48,207 of those members — 23,746 members are currently enrolled in Texas State, and 24,461 members are listed as Texas State alumni. Facebook and LinkedIn are currently counting thousands of active Texas State users. These free, accessible Web sites enable individuals to set up “accounts” that are their profiles. These profiles include personal pictures, basic and extended information, and whatever other “flare” they wish to add.

The profiles that have been created are helping alumni stay in contact all over the world. Whenever you graduate and move to a new town, a simple click of a mouse allows instant communication. Users do not have to worry about any installation, set up or fees. Once a member of one of these sites, it is easy to join the Texas State Alumni Association page or group. The Texas State Alumni Association pages will provide users updates on association events and important dates. The information on

the page will give users the opportunity to stay in contact with the association in a new and interactive way.

Texas State University is only one of thousands of colleges and universities to contribute to this new era of communi-cation. If we as Bobcats can promote our traditions and pride, one day we may be the leading university taking over this social era of communications.

Trading Up DaysThe Alumni Student Chapter asks the same question to the student body every year: “If it’s not a Texas State T-Shirt…Why wear it?” Trading Up Day is the student chapter’s biannual event that allows the student body to trade in T-shirts from other universities and trade up to a free Texas State T-shirt.

The Alumni Student Chapter included the Round Rock Higher Education Center in its Trading Up Days for the first time on Sept. 24. Judy Oskam allowed the associa-tion to work with her mass communication-public relations class to spread the word about the event.

In addition to the Round Rock event, the Alumni Student Chapter hosted its bian-nual event for the fall semester on Oct. 8 on the San Marcos campus. As in the past, the focus was on pride in Texas State and supporting Bobcat Traditions.

Benefits of association membership

Texas State Alumni Association members enjoy a number of exclu-

sive benefits of membership. The greatest benefit is knowing you are helping students gain one of their educational

Champion a real champion

Boerne honored one of its heroes in September when citizens dedicated Samuel V. Champion High School, named for a beloved principal, coach and Texas State

alumnus, class of 1976, who died Jan. 8, 2007, at age 52.Sam Champion was a 1972 graduate of Boerne High School and returned to that

school district in 1982 to become a science teacher and football-basketball-track coach at the middle school. In 1987 he was named principal of the high school and relished that job until his health forced him to give it up in 2002, when he took another position aimed at keeping at-risk kids in school.

As principal, Champion earned a reputation for his passionate dedication to students. He also had fun with them: He did back flips with the cheerleaders at pep rallies. On Fridays before spring break, he would make the parking lot into a beach, sit in his shorts in his lawn chair under an umbrella and lecture the kids to be careful on their holiday. They loved him. And when he

was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2000, hundreds of them — and many others in town — lined the road to wish him well when he traveled to the hospital for surgery. He came back to work four months later because he just couldn’t stand to be away.

The school board suspended its policy of naming facilities for people only after they had been dead for five years and passed the school’s name before Champion died. The new $52 million facility off Highway 46, Boerne’s second high school, opened this fall with 1,750 students.

goals, a first-class education from Texas State University.

The following exclusive items are part of your membership benefits. Knowing what those benefits are is the first step to utilizing them.

Hillviews — All Alumni Association members receive complimentary issues of Hillviews. Now that the Hillviews mailing list is limited to donors of $50 a year, your Alumni Association membership assures you a copy.

E-mail forwarding — Do you still have a Hotmail or Yahoo! e-mail address? As a member, the association gives you an e-mail forwarding address for example, “your address”@TxStateAlumni.org. The e-mail forwarding address can help you person-ally and professionally. It allows you the ability to use this e-mail address without ever changing it, and it will make it easier for people to find you. Whether you are looking for a job or want to re-connect with old friends, this benefit will help you accom-plish your goals.

Online Alumni Directory — Another exclusive benefit of membership is the ability to search the online Alumni Direc-tory for your Bobcat alumni friends. This benefit will allow you not only to search for other alumni, but also to let them know where you are.

Sustaining membership

You have been waiting for and asking for it, and now it is here: The Texas

State Alumni Association is proud to introduce its newest membership level — a sustaining membership.

This membership gives you the opportu-nity to pick a dollar amount to be automati-cally deducted from your bank account each month. The minimum level is $10 a month, and there is no maximum.

This opportunity allows graduates a way to stay in touch with their university. Your donation will support programs and events that advance the university, connect alumni and friends and increase the quality of student life.

Premiums for the sustaining membership will depend on the amount that is selected to donate each month. Those premiums include plaques, exclusive invitations to alumni events, career services and much more.

For more information about the sustaining memberships, call the Texas State Alumni Association at 888.798.2586 or e-mail us at [email protected].

As an alum of Texas State, you may purchase a variety of high quality,

competitively priced insurance products through the Texas State Alumni Association. These plans are administered by the Marsh Alumni Services. For more information on any of the plans listed below, contact Marsh directly at 888.560.2586.

Short-term medicalAre you between jobs? Or perhaps a recent

grad? Chances are you’re in need of tempo-rary medical insurance until you become part of an employer’s plan. The Short-Term Medical Plan provides comprehensive, temporary medical coverage.

Catastrophe major medicalWhile we like to think that it will never

happen to us, a serious accident or illness could occur. Would your current health insurance or Medicare cover all of the expenses? The Catastrophe Major Medical Plan is designed to help pick up where your basic health insurance, or even Medicare, leaves off.

10-year term life You may be thinking, I already have life

insurance. Why would I need more? Chances are, you probably do not have enough. Financial experts recommend you have life insurance coverage equal to six times your annual income. The 10-Year Term Life Plan offers up to $1 million in coverage.

Auto/home The Texas State Alumni Association has

teamed up with Liberty Mutual to offer Texas State Alumni Group Savings Plus – a program that provides savings of up to 10 percent on your auto and home insurance. Group Savings Plus also features convenient automatic account deductions with no down payment or finance charges, as well as 24-hour claims and roadside assistance.

Disability income You select a monthly benefit that’s best

for you – up to $10,000 per month to help provide an income when a covered disabling accident or illness prevents you from working. All alumni of Texas State and/or

spouses of alumni, under age 60, who have been actively working (at least 30 hours a week) are eligible to apply for the Group Disability Income Plan.

Long-term care Private long-term care insurance pays

many expenses not covered by Medicare and helps prevent you from having to “spend down” your assets, a prerequisite for Medicaid assistance. More importantly, it helps protect your freedom to choose a nursing home facility or home health care provider. That’s a liberty you may not have with Medicaid.

Medicare supplementThe Medicare Supplement program

can help keep intact the savings you’ve spent a lifetime building in the event of a prolonged illness or a severe injury. The plan is designed to help cover those expenses not covered by Medicare.

Bobcats gathered in droves (or prides!) for the SMU game in Dallas in September. More than 600 fans gathered on the beautiful lawns on the Mustang campus for a pre-game barbecue hosted by the Alumni Association and President Denise Trauth. Others visited and overflowed the Knox Street Pub, hosted by owners Blake ’91 and Di Ann ’91 Bogus, center above. An estimated 4,000 Bobcat fans filled the stadium with noise and fun led by the Loud Crowd. The Bobcats won the second half of the game and aced the halftime show (we’ll put our band up against the best of ‘em!), but came up short on the score 47-36.
