ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND 2013

Page 2: Alumni Reunion Weekend 2013

Welcome Alumni and Friends:

Saint Augustine’s University is excited to welcome you “Home” for the celebration of the 146 Year Anniversary of the Founding of the University and the Thirty-Second Commencement Exercise. This weekend is a historic one for the University as it is the first Commencement of Saint Augustine’s University. I am proud to announce that the Class of 2013 are graduates of Saint Augustine’s UNIVERSITY!

This has been a very busy, yet rewarding year at The Aug. Our Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Students have worked diligently to insure that the University continues to grow and expand in all areas of the University. We had the great pleasure of spending time with

and exposing students to author Tina McElroy Ansa. The National Alumni Association, under the leadership of President Pattye Brown, contributed over $11,000 in scholarships this year to students enrolled in various academic programs. Enrollment is stable and the University’s financial solvency is stronger than ever. Students are studying abroad in Brazil, China, France, South Africa and Spain enhancing their global exposure and experiences. Students are applying for and participating in internships with major corporations and companies all over the country.

The Superior Sound Marching Band (SSMB), under the leadership of Mr. Thurman Hollins, performed at the Adrian Carroll Battle of the Bands in October and before a crowd of 4,000 at a rally for President Obama in November at Pullen Park in Raleigh. Former President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker.

Our athletic teams continue to represent well in conference and national competition. The Falcons captured their fourth consecutive highest team grade point average award for both women’s and men’s basketball among all participating CIAA teams. Men’s Indoor Track won the NCAA Division II National Championship and Coach George “Pup” Williams was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.

The 2012 issue of HBCU Digest listed the President of Saint Augustine’s University as one of the 50 Most Powerful influences in the HBCU community. I continue to represent the 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the White House Initiative on HBCUs Advisory Board and was appointed by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to the inaugural Homeland Security Advisory Board. Saint Augustine’s University is the only HBCU represented on that Board.

I am pleased to share that the Guest Speaker for Honors Convocation this year was Dr. Steve Perry. Dr. Perry is the Founder and Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut.

There are so many wonderful things taking place at The Aug that I am anxious to share with you. Please do not hesitate to stop me while you’re on campus to hear more about those wonderful things. I would love to know how you have decided to invest in your Alma Mater and how we can help make the investment a reality. We stand ready to assist you this weekend in the days and years to come.

Congratulations to the Fiftieth Year Class – the Class of 1963 and all of the other classes in reunion – Classes of ‘3’s and ‘8’s. Welcome home and have a wonderful weekend. Falcons Soar High!

With kindest regards,Dianne Boardley SuberPresidentSaint Augustine’s University

■ All gifts received between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, will be credited toward the class’s fundraising totals. Corporate matching gifts received during this time period will also be included.
