A LUMNI N EWS 37 Class Notes 1988 Colin Richmond traveled to Nicaragua in late May and early June on a mission trip. He has made these trips about a dozen times in the last 10 years. 1990 Doug Linton is a Senior Lab Technician with Wright Medical Implant Technology. He resides in Bartlett, TN. 1994 Stephanie Thorne is First Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 77, in Lexington, TN. 1995 Yvette Touchet is a graphic designer with the Memphis Daily News. 1996 Andrea Kronberg Gillespie was chosen for Boutique Design magazine’s sixth annual Boutique 18 roster of the industry’s up-and-coming young interior designers. The winners are profiled in the May+June 2011 edition of Boutique Design and were honored at the annual Boutique 18 Bash on May 19, 2011 at the Eve Nightclub in Las Vegas’ CityCenter complex. In the magazine Andrea describes her “biggest achievement as successfully taking an existing hotel and overhauling the design 180 degrees.” Andrea has her own design company – AK Designs. 1997 Tim Regan is with the Oh No Oh My pop-rock quartet out of Austin, TX. With the group he has toured the world. He was formerly a member of Snowglobe, a group he co-founded after college. Tim plans to be married to former Memphis musical artist Kelley Mickwee. 1998 Jennifer Montgomery Robinson is married to Marcus Robinson and they have a two year old son, Marcus Robinson, III. The Robinsons make their home in Vero Beach, FL, where Jennifer is a paramedic. 1999 Jay-Jay Babu graduated in 2003 from Loyola University in Chicago with a BS in Information Systems Management. He received an MS in Health Systems Management in 2008 and received an MBA in Finance this past May from George Mason University. Jay-Jay is currently living in McLean, VA. and working at Sprint Corporation as a Financial Analyst in Reston, VA. He is pleased to tell us that he is engaged to be married to KPMG financial analyst Syrene Tanagras of Arlington, VA this August in Naples, Florida. 2000 Natalie Bingham Hoover and husband Dustin welcomed new daughter (Ellie) on June 14, 2011, weighing 7 lbs, 3 oz. Michael Broughton is a Public Accountant with the Reznick Group in Atlanta, GA. Jennifer Kersting Ohman is married to Joseph Ohman and they have three daughters, Brianna (8), Aubrey (6) and new daughter Kendall, born on April 19, 2011. This fall, Jennifer begins her third year as a preschool teacher with Memphis City Schools Voluntary PreK Program. Emily Pate married a college classmate from CBU, Ben Austin. After graduation, they both received a MA in English from Loyola University in Chicago and settled there for several years. Ben taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at the University of Chicago and liked it so much that the couple moved to South Korea where they both taught English at the elementary school level. Emily says, “I admit that teaching in Korea was among the most rewarding and gratifying experiences I’ve ever had.” After nearly eight years away and a recent trip to Iceland, the couple returned to spend the spring and summer with their families.

2001Lynn Jennings Park and husband Chris

welcomed new daughter Reese Katherine Park on May 11, 2011, weighing in at 8 lbs, 9 oz and measuring 20 ¾ inches. (see Faculty Focus section)

Ben Trzil and wife Julie Bishop Trzil have moved to the Columbia, Missouri area where she is in a Veterinary Residency program at the University of Missouri.

2002Joey Babu graduated from DePaul University

with BS in 2006 in Information Systems. Joey has been living in Chicago for the past eight years and is working full-time at DecisiveBI as a Data Warehouse Consultant. Joey pursued a MS in IT Project Management at DePaul, where he was a member of Upsilon Pi

Epsilon (International Honors Society for Computing and Information Disciplines, Delta Chapter) and the Golden Key International Honour Society and was active in Varsity Interstate Soccer.

Taylor Cahill works in the restaurant business in Gunnison, Colorado.

Cami Chando Fields and husband Brian welcomed their new son Preston on January 31, 2011. Preston weighed in at 6 lbs, 15 oz.

Chad Connolly and wife Laura welcomed new daughter, Carrington Rose Regina Connolly, on June

20, 2011. She weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz. and measured 19 ½ inches.

Michelle Kinney appeared on the cover of the Suburban Living tabloid sponsored by the Bartlett Chamber of Commerce in the Commercial Appeal in December. A story about Michelle and several pictures were also included in the article in the same tab about health and fitness (“Health – Get a jump on the New Year and Get Fit”). Michelle is a performance coach at CrossFit Bartlett. (This information appeared in last issue under the class of 2004 in error-our apologies.)

Michelle Wilkes was named to the Graduate School Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

2003Christina Babu graduated in 2007 in Music

Industry (Conservatory of Music) from Capital University. She interned at Lincoln Center and Sony in New York City in 2007 and has been living in Manhattan, NY for four years. Christina is currently pursuing a Master Degree at NYU in Public Relations and Corporate Communications, to be completed in December 2011. She is also presently doing freelance PR work for several musicians and arts organizations in New York City.

Shannon Crosby married Joey Lyons on April 2, 2011 at St. Mary’s Church in Memphis. A reception followed at the River Terrace on Mud Island and they took a honeymoon to St. Lucia. The couple makes their home in Clinton, Mississippi. Shannon graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2007. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis in 2010 and Joey also received a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from UT-Memphis in 2009. The couple are licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy with Good Samaritan Physical Therapy of Vicksburg, practicing in Jackson, Port Gibson and Vicksburg in Mississippi.

Daniel Gorline is a pilot with Delta Airlines based out of New York.

Bobby Lawrence has been accepted to the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN for the fall semester and was recently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Bobby has been a science teacher and coach at SBA for the past two years.

Ben Nicol married Anna Humerickhouse, who attended SBA for a while, on May 21, 2011 at the Sanctuary on the Square in Collierville. Anna earned a Bachelor Degree in Professional Studies, Marketing Management from the University of Memphis and is currently pursuing a Master Degree in Elementary Education. Anna starts a career as an elementary school teacher in the fall. Ben earned a Bachelor Degree in Communications at the University of Memphis and is an investment advisor for First Tennessee Bank. The couple makes their home in Memphis.

Jennifer Oros graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in May with a Doctor Pharmacy degree. She has taken a job with Target Pharmacy in Nashville.

2004Brittany Butler is a Lieutenant Corporal and an

Intelligence Analyst with the United States Marine Corps. She was recently stationed at Yuma, AZ with the squadron VMA-513 “The Nightmares.” She deployed to Afghanistan in May for six months. Previously, Brittany spent two years in Okinawa, Japan and was deployed to Thailand and the Philippines assisting in humanitarian efforts

after natural disasters. Brittany tells us, “I am proud to serve and hope everything is well with SBA.”

Kim McCleary started working in September, 2010, as an intern architect for w-a-a (we architect anonymous, LTD) in Beijing, China. Since then, she has designed the company’s new website and was part of the design team for a museum complex in Zhuhai. Kim tells us that she has met many interesting people, has been exposed to varied aspects of their culture and is even tutoring a six year old boy in English on Saturdays. Kim plans to be in China for a while and enroll in graduate school. (see Alumni Photo Album)

2005Jordan Cahill lives in Atlanta, Georgia and works

as a computer specialist.Lucian Godwin graduated from the Memphis

City Police Department’s Recruiting Class on May 26, 2011.

Brooke Porter married Charles Nichols on June 11, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Cordova. Brooke has a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee-Martin and teaches at Shelby Oaks Elementary School in Memphis. Charles received a Bachelor Degree in History from UT-Martin and is a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University studying museum management.

Bailey Ryan Ziemanski has joined Pinnacle Airlines as a pilot. Her husband Marshall has been on a six months deployment as a B1 Pilot.

Natalie Woodard married Jesse Taylor on June 4, 2011 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis. Natalie received a BS in Nursing from Baptist College of Health Sciences and is a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department of Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. Jesse earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Memphis and is a Scribe in the Emergency Department of Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. The couple honeymooned in Italy and make their home in Memphis.

2006Sarah Benedetti married Matt Hammond on

June 25, 2011 at Holy Rosary Church in Memphis. After the wedding the couple honeymooned in Jamaica and they make their home in Memphis.

Sarah graduated from the University of Memphis and works as a Medical Assistant at OrthoMemphis. Matt also graduated from the University of Memphis and is a Fuels Journeyman for the US Air National Guard. (see Alumni Photo Album)

Jenni Loeffel married Alexander Brown on May 21, 2011 at First Evangelical Church. The wedding was followed by a reception at the Memphis Zoo’s Teton Trek Lodge. Jenni graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Radiography from the Baptist College of Health Science. She is a Medical Radiography Technologist at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Alexander has a BBA in Hospitality and Resort Management from the University of Memphis. He is a Hotel Auditor at the Marriott in Collierville.

Suzanne Newsom married Alan Tankersley on May 14, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a reception following at the Memphis Marriott Downtown. Both Suzanne and Alan graduated from the University of Memphis with Bachelor Degrees in Business Administration. The couple resides in Cordova, TN.

Tom Newton graduated from the University of Memphis in May, 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He is currently employed at Budweiser in Memphis, TN.

Megan Peterson was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

2007Chris Cahill graduated Cum Laude in May, 2011

from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga with a Political Science degree. He was accepted to Law School at UT-Knoxville. Chris makes his home in Big Canoe, GA.

Chris Colanero graduated from Christian Brothers University in May, 2011, Magna Cum Laude with a degree in BioChemistry. He has been accepted to Pharmacy School at the University of Tennessee for the 2011 fall semester.

Sarah Creel graduated from The Citadel in May, 2011 with a double BA degree in French and Spanish. She regularly appeared on the Dean’s List and was a member of Sigma Delta Pi Hispanic Honor Society and Pi Delta Phi French Honor Society where she was Vice President and received the French Journal Award. Sarah studied abroad at the University of Alcalá in Alcalá, Spain and the L’Institut Linguistique de Peyrou in Montpellier, France. She graduated as a member of Who’s Who Among American College Students, served as Captain of her NCAA Division I Track & Field Team and received the Colonel Floyd W. Brown Award for the student who exhibits the highest degree of customs and courtesies of a Cadet at The Citadel.

Jacqueline Fillion graduated Summa Cum Laude and University Honors from the University of

Memphis in December, 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She studied abroad in the summer of 2009 at The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU), Germany pursuing her minor in German. In the summer of 2010 she worked as an intern for the Shelby County Drug Court and currently is

a Police Officer in Training with the Baltimore Police Academy in Maryland.

Stephanie Moll has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society that she is using toward her education at the University of Memphis. ACS scholarships are awarded to students for leadership, academic achievement and community service and who have had a cancer diagnosis before the age of 19.

Kathleen Platten married Jason Caswell on July 2, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Church in Germantown, with a reception that followed at Clark Tower in Memphis and honeymoon in Jamaica. Kathleen graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Special Education from Mississippi State University and is currently a Special Ed teacher for Knox county Schools in Knoxville, TN. Jason earned a Bachelor Degree in Physiology and a Master Degree in Business Administration, both from Mississippi State University. He is studying to be a Physician’s Assistant at South College in Knoxville.

Jonathan Simon and Mary Swatley were married on May 14, 2011 at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Germantown. Jonathan graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate and Magna Cum Laude from Mississippi State University on April 30, 2011 with a degree in Operational Meteorology. During his stellar college career, Jonathan made either the Dean’s or President’s List, holding many training and commander positions with the AFROTC. He was active in service to the community and a recipient of numerous awards through the AFROTC and other leadership groups. Last spring he was presented the Sonny Montgomery Leadership Award, given to only three worthy MSU students each year. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force and attends flight training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Mary graduated Summa Cum Laude from Delta State University in Secondary Education specializing in Mathematics. The couple lives in Wichita Falls.

Jessica Taylor graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in May 2011 with a BS in Microbiology. She received additional honor and recognition at commencement as the top academic and Outstanding Graduate in the Biological Sciences/Microbiology. Jessica begins medical school this fall at UTHSC in Memphis.

Samantha Thompson was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor society) in the spring semester at the University of Memphis.

2008Mikey Gilliland recently began work as a

Brakeman for the Canadian National Railroad following in the footsteps of his Dad, Lawrence, who recently retired from CNR. Mikey has a son Michael (Mikey) Lawrence Gilliland, Jr. born October 1, 2010. (see Alumni Photo Album)

Chad Martin was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Casey McManus was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Kate Schuhlein was named to the Dean’s List at Agnes Scott College for the 2011 spring semester.

2009Charles Christiansen is a junior at the University

of Tennessee-Chattanooga where he has appeared on the Dean’s List for a 4.0 GPA, a Resident Advisor in Housing, External Vice President of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, a member of the A-Team (campus tours for admissions) and The House (Christian organization). Charles is an Exercise Science Pre-Professional major and plans to go to Physical Therapy School. He is also engaged to Memphian Hannah Kinzer.

Gabi Kowalczyk-Ford was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Katie Michaud was named to the Hendrix College Dean’s list for the 2011 spring semester.

2010Matthew Goold was named to the Dean’s List

at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Wes Hendren recently received a four-year NROTC Scholarship to MIT. Wes, a freshman at Tulane at the time, is currently making a decision on his future. His commanding officer said that his math scores were in the top one percent and that he was almost guaranteed to be commissioned as a Nuclear Engineer Officer at either school. Wes mentioned that he is “very grateful for the opportunity and honor and very humbled by it, as well…I had to share this because I owe most of it to SBA and the great

education that I received there.”Katie Holthouser was named to the Dean’s List

at Samford University for the 2011 spring semester.Dylan Holzemer was named to the Dean’s List

at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Matt Hotz was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester, and was installed in Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honour Society. Matt was also active with the Freshman Senate this past school year.

Delsey Lawson has been inducted in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honorary Society and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority at Mississippi State University.

Kelsey Loeffel was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Memphis for the 2011 spring semester.

Lori McCue appeared on the Dean’s List at American University her freshman year. She has also been appointed a Program Associate in the University College and is a Blogs Editor for an on-campus publication called AWOL. This summer, Lori interned at United Press International in Washington, DC as a “Junior Web Editor.” She updated the website by keeping it current with new stories and provided strategies to increase traffic at the site. She wrote a weekly blog as part of the site’s new blog section.

Sam Moll was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in April for his outstanding win over Ole Miss, when his team, the University of Memphis Tigers, hosted the Rebels at the Memphis Redbirds’ AutoZone Park. Sam struck out the side in the third inning on his way to eight strike outs in seven innings, allowing only two walks.

Colin Schuhlein was received into the Catholic Church on Easter and he chose “Benedict” for his Confirmation name. Colin, who is at school at the Naval Academy, is serving as an ambassador for rising high school seniors in the Academy’s Summer Seminar program and participating in a Surface Cruise, where he is stationed on a Navy vessel shadowing an enlisted sailor. 2011Hannah LaCroix was selected to the University of

Memphis Cheer Squad.

Maid of Honor, her brother Bobby (’03) was a groomsman, Jennifer Gorline (’05) was a bridesmaid, Joe Martini (’99) served as an usher

and Charles Nolen (’98) was the organist for the special event.

2007 alum Alli McCleary (left) visited sister Kim (’04) in China this summer.

Kim currently lives in Beijing. The sisters were able to see popular sites including Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City

and The Great Wall.
