What’s New at SCA• Track Completed

Part of the SCA site plan was to add a track and field to our athletic fields for our track and field programs. In 2017, SCA received a generous gift from a donor that funded the installation of the track, as well as all needed items. The track and field were completed in April of 2018 (pictured right).

• 529 Investment Accounts A Federal Tax Bill passed in December allows parents to establish special tax-advantaged 529 investment accounts to pay for college and/or K-12 education. Deposits into 529 accounts are made with pre-tax monies and there are no taxes when the monies are withdrawn and used to pay for education expenses.

• Head of School to Icon of Education List SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson was named to the “2018 Icon of Education” list published by Ingram’s Magazine. Of the 95 honorees in the program’s 10-year history, Mrs. Harrelson is the first private K-12 educator to make the list.

Highlights from the 2017-2018 School YearAcademics• The graduating class of 2018 had 62 graduates! 100% of graduates are attending college, ministry school, or joining the

military.• The class of 2018 had an average ACT score of 25.2.

(Lee’s Summit R-7 average is 21.9, Missouri average is 20.4, and national average is 21).• For the fourth year in a row, SCA was ranked fifth overall in the top private schools in the Kansas City Metro area by

the Kansas City Business Journal.• Graduate Rachel Moore completed the Gold Medal Level of the Congressional Award for Youth. She is one of six

Missouri students to earn this award in 2018. Rachel will attend the gold medal ceremony this summer in Washington, D.C.

• SCA hosted 10 federal, state, and local lawmakers, and nearly 70 local stakeholders at the first Legislative Impact Breakfast. Lawmakers visited the campus and shared what was happening in public policy for private schools.

Athletics• Graduate Brett Campbell was SCA’s first wrestling State Champion and became the first SCA two-time

undefeated State Champion during the 2017-18 season. At State, he had his 200th career victory in the 200 lb. State Championship Match.

• Incoming Senior Lenetta Lee is SCA’s first Track & Field sprinter to become a State Champion in two events- the 100 and 200 meter dash. She also finished 7th in long jump.

• Six graduates will go on to play collegiate sports: Brett Campbell, wrestling at Oklahoma University (pictured right) Maya Cofield, soccer at Southwest Baptist University Preston Kliewer, basketball at MidAmerica Nazarene University Kaylee Lunn, track and field at Avila University Matthew McWilliams, baseball at Wichita State University Allayah Stillwell, volleyball at Kansas City Kansas Community College

Highlights from the 2017-2018 School Year

Fine Arts• Members of the high school choir took to the national stage

at Carnegie Hall in New York City to perform selections from Handel’s Messiah on Easter Sunday (pictured right).

• Two high school soloists and two quartets received the top honor of a gold medal at State Competition in Columbia.

• The junior high choir received a “I” rating at the Midwest Christian School Academic Meet and earned first place for the 7th consecutive year at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music Competition.

• Graduates Michaela Loux and Trenton Holloway had works of art chosen for display as part of the UCM High School Competitive Art Exhibition. Michaela also participated in UCM’s Senior Art Contest Day and received first-place in design.

• Incoming Sophomore Ashlyn Steller had an impressionistic painting selected as the 2018 Senate Art Exhibit Winner for Missouri Senate District 8 (pictured right).

• Incoming Sophomore Ben Schwab became a member of the Elite Youth Symphony of Kansas City, playing the cello.

• Graduate Connor Healy was named an Academic All-American by the National Speech and Debate Association.

• SCA Theatre standout incoming Senior John Davis received a Cappie Award for Best Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregulars. The Baker Street Irregulars won Best Ensemble in a Play for their acting in Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregulars (pictured left). The Kansas City Cappies works with students throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan Area to promote fine arts and journalism.

Service• The class of 2018 traveled to Texas for the annual senior

mission trip. Each SCA student was paired for the week with one student at Camp Blessing, a summer camp for students with special needs (pictured left).

• The Eagles Varsity Football Team partnered with the KC Chiefs to serve with Harvesters, handing out food at Arrowhead Stadium to various organizations within the community.

Austin Shearer married Janessa on December 8, 2017 in the Dominican Republic. (pictured left) Bri (Kohlsteadt) Wright and husand Joe welcomed their daughter Estelle Grace on February 5, 2018 (pictured below left). Brianne is the owner of Diamonds and Do’s LLC, a bridal hair design company in Ozark, Missouri.

08 Grayson Null and his wife Elyse welcomed their son Kobe River on June 3, 2018. The Nulls live in Los

Angeles, California- check out their Youtube Channel :Meet the Nulls.

09 Kristen (Withrow) Campbell and her husband Justin welcomed their second son Ian Jace on March 19, 2018. Kristen is a massage therapist and the owner of

Lakeview Gardens Massage Therapy in Warsaw, Missouri. Matthew McEwen and his wife Molly recently graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science College Center of Medicine with their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees (pictured left). He will soon begin a residency in Dermatology in Memphis, Tennessee.

Matthew Webb married Kayla on June 9, 2018.

10 Taylor (Harmon) Bouvia and her husband Rhett welcomed their daughter Gracelynn Lee

on August 31, 2017.

Sammie (Cataldo) Brundage married Ben Brundage (‘11) on June 23, 2018. Abby (Parrish) Keophaphone and her husband John welcomed their son Bellamy Jack on February 6, 2018. Sara (Gray) Krska and her husband Tyler welcomed their son Wesley Gray on August 21, 2017.

Steven Santon married Tara on April 28, 2018 (pictured bottom right). Steven was recently promoted to the rank of Captain in the United States Army.

11 Joshua Baker married Savanna on August 6, 2017. Joshua is currently finishing law school

at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.

Attorney Kam Eaken married Danielle (Bruns ‘12) on May 23 (pictured left). The destination wedding took place in Hawaii! Kam is a practicing attorney at Eaken Law in Lee’s Summit, and Danielle is a Veterinary Technician at Green Summit Animal Clinic.

Interior Designer” by Lee’s Summit Lifestyle Magazine.

Joan (Provider) Complot married Derek on June 2, 2018 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

13 Zach Crabtree is working as a Thermal Analysis Engineer on fighter jets, weapons systems, commercial 777s, and Space Systems at Boeing in St.

Louis, Missouri.

14 Greg Nicoll married Tiffany on June 24.

16 Sara (Young) Voss married Braden on June 2, 2018 (pictured left). Sara is studying Athletic Training at SBU to graduate as a certified Athletic Trainer

and will go into the Doctorate Physical Therapy program.

17 William Finch was sworn in to the Oath of Office for the United States Air Force and is a part of Basic Cadet Training at United States Air Force

Mrs. Trissa Lucht2018 Teacher of the YearSecondary Vocal Music Teacher Trissa Lucht was named SCA’s 2018 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Lucht has been a teacher at SCA for the past 13 years. SCA’s secondary music program has increased greatly under her leadership. Under her direction, the SCA choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City three times and won numerous state-level awards.

07-08 Boys’ Golf 10-Year AnniversaryThe 2007-08 Boys’ Golf Team was the first to go to State and earned SCA’s first Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) “Final Four” team trophy. For the 10-year anniversary of their accomplishment, the team was invited to return to SCA and receive a team banner. SCA will similarly honor all its past MSHSAA Final Four teams on their 10-year anniversary.

Graduates Share Professions at SCA Career FairThank you to the SCA graduates who returned to campus last spring as part of our first annual Career Fair. They shared about their professions (physical therapists, marketing strategist,s social worker, journalists, financial planners, etc.) with the eighth grade class.

SCA Remembeers Alumnus Alec RushThe SCA community lost Alec Rush, Class of 2016, on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. This dearly loved friend attended SCA for 13 years. He coached elementary soccer for three years and elementary and junior high track and field for two. He was studying Secondary Education at the University of Central Missouri and was pursuing a career as a history teacher and coach. An Alec Rush Memorial Fund has been established at SCA in his memory.
